at Southampton University, a PGCE atBristol and began his teaching career atDownside School teaching ReligiousStudies. At various stages including his Gap

year he has studied at the University ofGeorgia in the USA and carried outpostgraduate work at the MaryvaleInstitute in Birmingham and CardiffUniversity. He subsequently taught Religious

Studies and was a Housemaster at StColumba’s in St Alban’s, became DeputyHead of De La Salle College in Jerseyand finally Deputy Head of Our Lady’s,Abingdon. He starts work as Headmasterat St Martha’s this September. He chose St Martha’s not only

because of its fine reputation in providinga sound education but also because ofthe happy and caring teachingenvironment where every girl is valuedand respected as an individual. Whilstcontinuing to maintain the highstandards associated with all Catholicschools he reminded me that St Martha’sis an inclusive school welcoming girlsfrom all religious denominations.Currently thirty –five % of the students arenon Catholic.Matthew is married to Dawn and

they have 2 daughters aged 5 and 7.He has a wide range of interests, hasalways enjoyed sport and is a followerof Portsmouth Football Club and BathRugby Club. He looks forward tocontinuing the excellent work of StMartha's whilst at the same timedeveloping and enhancing the resourcesand facilities of the school.Science teaching comes high on his

list of priorities and he points outthat the refurbishment of the ScienceLaboratories will soon provide state of theart science facilities for the girls from Year7 to the Upper 6th. Mentioning that hewould like to see the school take on ahigher profile within the local communityhe drew attention to the Open Day onSeptember 28th (“Just come!”) and to theinclusion of the school in the IndependentSchool Show. He also expressed a keeninterest in working with local businessesand charities where ever possible. Hehas had a warm welcome from theSisters and from all the current staff, parents and girls and is very muchlooking forward to contributing to theschools long continued and successfulgrowth.

New Pro shop at HWGCBeen in the Pro shop at Hadley WoodGolf Club recently? Under newmanagement. Since Peter Jones theprevious Head Professional retired earlierthis year the shop has been taken over byhis teaching professionals AlistairArchibald and Paul Foster. Both have worked at the Club for 20

years and are highly regarded and muchliked by visitors and members. Anybodyrunning a Pro-shop has to be readywith the repartee. However the bantercomes with a smile and it is always apleasure to drop in there for a chat or alook at the gear. The shop has had a complete internal

rebuild and now sells three types ofgolfing equipment from Ping, TaylorMade and Titleist. The range of golf

Profile. A newHeadmaster atSt Martha’sMr Matthew BurkeVisiting St Martha’s school was a newexperience for me. A girl’s school, setback from the road sheltered by treesand its long held association with TheSisters of St Martha has always given it arather private aura. So it was with someinterest that I visited there to talk toMatthew Burke the new Headmaster andsuccessor to James Sheridan.Walking into the grounds revealed

stately Mount House, the subject of anew book to be released soon. Theschool was founded by the Sisters of StMartha some 110 years ago and wasmoved to Mount House in 1947.Matthew’s personal journey to aHeadship here started in Bath where heattended Prior Park College. He then studied Philosophy and Politics

clothing for men is by Tommy Hilfiger,Oscar Jacobsen and Galvin Green.Green Lamb and Calvin Klein for women. The gear is uncluttered and easy to see.You can have a quiet look round withoutbeing badgered by an over attentiveshop assistant. What was the workshop has been

converted into a simulator room withsome serious state of the art hardware.Three things go on in here. Custom fittinggolf clubs, swing analysis and actual golfplay. You stand on a special mat. In frontof you is a soft screen onto which isprojected a golf course. When I was thereit was The Belfrey, Birmingham’s famouscourse. At the side is a squat black box,the launch monitor. You drive an actual golf ball. This hits

the screen ahead and it’s projected pathshown as a white curving line on thescreen. As the ball flies so the courseunfolds before you. The launch monitormeasures how fast you swing your club, the launch angle, distance the ball flewplus several other bits of data. The ball’s final position is shown on the

screen with details of the remainingdistance to the pin. By comparing yourpresent club with their range of newclubs, the pros can decide what type ofclub would suit you. ‘Sometimes’ says

Hadley Wood TCSummer HolidayProgrammeAnother active & noisy 5 weeks at HadleyWood Tennis Club was held during July &August. It was great to see over 200young players working & playing hard.We are international now with playersregularly attending from Paris, Norwayand Malaysia. Every day the playersarrived at 9.30am excited to start theday. For 3 or 5 hours they ran, hit plenty ofballs & played a variety of games. Allplayed in a competitive but fun way.Strokes were improved, rules learned &friends made. The weather was kind;too hot on occasions but nobodycomplained. A special thanks go to themany young assistants. All have attendedour courses in the past & now work withthe young players, helping them to learnthe game &enjoy themselves. We arevery lucky in Hadley Wood to haveso many young people who are preparedto give so much to their local community.Well done. Autumn term Tennis startsweek beginning Monday 16 September.Mini & Juniorcourse take place afterschool and on Saturday morning. A short history ofTractors at the HadleyWood Association. We used to have a beautiful old tractor,an early post war Fordson. Brian Kernexpert engineer that he is (even if he ranan antique shop) kept it going. It wasoften seen on occasions like Sports Dayspulling a large old trailer aroundBartram’s Lane field packed withlaughing children. Then in about the year2000 the tractor garage was vandalisedand the tractor burned out. Thanks to thegenerosity of Mr and Mrs O’Keefe ofWaggon Road we purchased a smallJohn Deere tractor with which we wereable to cut the grass and do a lot of thework necessary to keep the Associationand its grounds neat and tidy. However itwas not big enough to pull the big grasscutters needed to keep the Sports field ingood shape and this had to be done byexpensive outside companies. Nowthirteen years later we have bought anorange second-hand Kubota from theArsenal Football Club. Kamil the Headgroundsman says that the Arsenal tractoris very good in mid- field. He has seen noincidents and expects some greatperformances from this new purchase.

Our very best wishes and congratulations go to Mrs Stella Ross Collins seen above celebrating her 100th birthday.Stella was President of the NSPCC locally for 15 years, she was a resident for 55 years and Leslie her late husband wasthe founder Chairman of the Hadley Wood Association.

September – a time ofpossibility, change andanxietyWhilst school may be a distant memory, for many the association of Septemberwith a new school year full of blankexercise books and exciting possibilities, still remains. According topsychotherapist, Lisa Daitz, the movefrom summer to autumn often evokesfeelings around changes and newbeginnings.“For parents of children ineducation, September marks a transitionas the child moves up a year. For some, this may mean starting nursery or school, whilst for others, this may be a move tothe next school or even leaving foruniversity. For parents, these transitionsmay be accompanied by concerns andanxieties around the unknowns of thenext stage. How will the child fare? Willthey be academically successful and(what seems to be most important forparents) will they be socially successfulso that they can grow into confidentadults? Whilst parents may try to preparetheir child as much as possible, they alsoknow that some of it is out of their hands, leaving them with a number offeelings.”Alongside the transitions andchanges, September is also oftenassociated with new beginnings as theassociation with the new school yearnever really fully fades. According to LisaDaitz:“For parents of children ineducation, the changes for the child arealso often accompanied by changes forthe parent (most usually the mother) as itimpacts on her daily life. Alongside this,

for many, September can be a time totake stock as the end of summer remindsus of school days and new beginnings.Often, before understanding thatchanges are needed, feelings orsymptoms come first.”When we sufferfrom anxiety or panic attacks or feelingsof sadness or emptiness, it is anindication that something is wrong andthat there are feelings and issues to beexplored and understood and thatchanges may need to be made. Thesemay be changes in the way we live or inthe way we consider an issue or problem.Counselling and psychotherapy can helpto open up the feelings so that there is abetter understanding of your life and yourissues. With an increasing self-awareness comes insight and a betterability to see choices and make thechanges necessary to manage your lifein a more fulfilling way.”For further information about counsellingand psychotherapy, without obligation, contact Lisa Daitz on 07771 522426 [email protected]
