Oracle Database Appliance X4-2

Pre-build system comprising hardware, software, storage

and networking

Node 1 – 2 x 12 cores Intel Xeon processer – 256 GB RAM

Node 2 - 2 x 12 cores Intel Xeon processer – 256GB RAM

Storage Shelf – 20 2.5 Inch HDD & 4 SSD 18TB raw, 32TB doubled-mirror or 21.3 TB tripled-mirror Optional storage expansion with additional storage shelf

Virtualized ODA uses Oracle VM

Servers

Contains 2 X4-2 Oracle Sun Server and a DE2-24P storage

shelf with 24 disks

Can be used to deploy Oracle Databases and other

application such as OEM

One Database domain (ODA_BASE vServer) are created out of box on

each node in Virtualized ODA

Additional vServers are created as

needed

Licensed as needed

2,4,6,…. 36 cores per server

Challenges – Drivers for our Migration Approach

Preservation of historic data of OEM

Avoid rediscovery of targets

Avoid redeployment of jobs

Lack of High Available OEM

Require failback plan

Limitation with solution-in-a-box

Limited downtime for migration

Required lower life cycle OEM environment

Cognizant’s Solution Approach

OEM Migration Flow

POC

Downtime Start Reconfigure Existing OMS

and OMAs to F5 single IP/URL

Downtime End

Add 2nd OMS on ODA VM

Create Standby DB on ODA for existing OMR

Downtime Start Switchover

OMR DB to ODA

Add 2nd instance of

OMR

Re-enroll Additional OMS to New Primary

OMS

Migrate Primary OMS to ODA VM (Backup/

Recovery)

Repoint OMS to new OMR

Downtime End

Configure and build Guest

VMs

Install & Configure

Virtualized ODA

Configure F5 with ALL OMS IP

Key Learning's and Takeaways

ODA

• Multiple VLANs can’t be configured out of box in ODA using firstnet

• Use oakcli create vlan commands

• Suboptimal File system performance when ACFS mounted over NFS on ODA VM

Presented file system as block device to VM

Local storage of physical node could be used as repository to achieve greater performance

But with that no HA to VMs

Use SSD based disk group for database redo

This helps to improve overall database performance

OEM

• No documented migration path

• Combined process of adding 2nd OMS and Restore and recover of 1st OMS

Admin server Migration –documented in recovery documentation of OMS

• F5 persistence setting

• F5 trusted certificate issue

Instead of SSL termination on F5, OEM requires SSL handshake

• Linux native Rsync instead ACFS replication

• Alias of primary hostname are required on DR OMS

• “Solution-in-a-box” template – file systems not extendable
