T H E W A T E R T O W E R

Converting a derelict 130 year old commercial building into a luxury home is never aneasy task, but when that building is a water tower, with six foot walls and a massivesteel tank at the top then nothing is straight forward.

The site, just around the corner from Elephant & Castle tube in South London, is thelocation of a former workhouse, the watertower being the source of water for the theninhabitants. Derelict for a number of years the transformation from eyesore to Londonlandmark is nothing short of miraculous. The compelling story of the watertowerattracted the attention of producers of Channels 4’s ‘Grand Designs’,with an hour longprogramme following it’s redevelopment airing in October 2012.Existing features such as the internal staircase and brickwork have been retained,alongside the use of contemporary construction techniques and finishes to create acomfortable nine story home.

HAF ironmongery was specified throughout on all internal doors, with a few cleverbespoke embellishments to fit with the unique nature of the project.

Description of the Ironmongery• Specified from the outset,theModis lever handle,manufactured from solid stainless

steel with a satin finish, was seen as the perfect combination of design andfunctionality, a common thread throughout the finish on the build, where theindustrial heritage of the building is frequently referenced.

• The Modis handle uses a discreet insert rose,which allows for the normal usabilitywhilst maintaining a clean design. The unique nature of this feature makes theModis especially flexible in its use, as seen in the site photo to the left where thehandle was used on a door clad in brick to cleverly disguise the opening.

• The consistent use of Modis throughout the project sees the lever handle used in anumber of internal situations. The continuity of design in the HAF range ensures allbathroom thumbturns,releases and escutcheonsmatch the specified lever handles.

• Prompt order and delivery,with simple interactions between the architect,HAF andsite made for a seamless and painless specifcation and ordering process.

Bespoke Work• One handle needed shortening to stop it fouling a mirror faced cupboard, bespoke

work which HAF were happy to undertake to ensure a high quality consistent finishacross the build.

T H E S T A N L E Y H O U S E H O T E L

The grade II listed Stanley House Hotel,situated in the RibbleValley,Lancashire, is one of the North West's premier hotel, spa andconference facilities.

InMarch 2011,the hotel beganwork on the construction of 18 newbedrooms and a luxury spa. HAF International were chosen tocarefully specify modern ironmongery to complement thebeautifully designed interior, the finished results being a finerepresentation of the work carried out by the HAF team.

Workingwith the interior designer and the clients own architecturalconsultant, HAF fulfilled the brief to provide an aestheticallypleasing, functional and coordinated ironmongery specification.

Description of the Ironmongery Specification• The specification called for polished stainless steel HAF Wing

levers with pull handles to match on cross corridor doors, withfeature pull handles to the main area’s of the hotel.

• For the feature pull handles we proposed the Pod design fromPhilip Watts Designs, the client wanted an organic design andwe felt this unique design best complimented the proposedinteriors.

• For the cross corridors we modified our existing Flare handlewith a milled scallop to tie in with the Wing design.

• Riser doors on the corridors needed to be as discreet as possible,so we utilised SOSS concealed hinges with a captive key budgetlock to avoid having any surface fixed ironmongery.

• Reception to room corridors required access control to stop nonresidents gaining access, this again needed to be discreet so wespecified Shearlocks and Solenoid bolts with accessories.

• As well as conventional timber doors there were a number offrameless glass doors to which we supplied a floorspring withtop & bottom patch fittings and Pod handle.

• Cross corridor doors required electro-magnetic hold-open closersas wall/floormounted door closers weren’t an option due to theaesthetics.

Conformity with Building & RegulationsTo comply with the requirements of Building Regulations Part B &Mwe supplied architectural door ironmongery which whereapplicable bears CE marking in accordance with The ConstructionProducts Directive.

Case Study

Rib Room Bespoke Pull HandleThe original handle designs were passed to HAFfor manufacture, HAF worked closely with thedesign team in the creation of the unique brassand leather pull handles.

HAF first visited the designer with sample finishesfor approval, and subsequently with a sample ofthe proposed handle, complete with hand stitchedgreen leather.

The designer specified an un-lacquered satin brassfinish, which when exposed to the elements willage beautifully over time. In combination with theleather grip, which again will age gracefully, thehandle takes on a timeless look.

A new finish for existingfeature pull handles

the existing feature ‘R’ pull

handles, bringing the entrance

door in-line with the finish of the

new ironmongery and match the

rest of the new interior.

HAF door levers and pull handles are easily installed using one of the simple

methods detailed below. If you have any questions relating to the installation

Standard sprung rose

Standard fix sprung levers are connectedthrough a spring assist cassette unit. Thereversible cassette unit is marked for left andright handed lever applications and thelevers are secured through the door usinggrub screws which lock onto the spindle.

Shape 2

The Shape 2 levers are secured to a brassinner rose andwith additional fixing throughthe door using grub screws which lock ontothe spindle. The outer rose has a uniquemachine turned finish and is threaded sothat it screws on to the inner rose.

Insert Rose

Levers on insert roses have a uniqueappearance with the handle appearing togrow out of the door. The insert roses arefitted into a pre-drilled 20mmhole and fixedwith screws. The levers are secured throughthe door using grub screws which lock ontothe spindle, and should always be used withheavy sprung lock cases.

Dual fix pull handle

The dual fix pull handles can be either facefixed to a door for single sided applicationsor paired up with a bolt through pull handlefor back to back fixing. The base pillar is fittedto the door using a wood screw for singleside fixing or bolted through to the pullhandle on the opposite side of the door. Thepull handle is then fitted over the base pillarand secured to it by grub screws.

Note: HAF spring assist handles should always be used withheavy sprung lock cases
