This is the bread of affliction which our fathers ate in the

land of Egypt. Let all who are hungry come and eat. Letall who are needy come and celebrate the Passover. Atpresent we are here; next year we hope to be in Israel.

    The Four Questions

    4 Questions (Ma Nishtanah):

Why is this nightdifferent than allother nights?

    1. "Why is it that on all other nights during theyear we eat either bread or matzah, but on thisnight we eat only matzah?"2. "Why is it that on all other nights we eat allkinds of herbs, but on this night we eat only bitter

herbs?"3. "Why is it that on all other nights we do notdip our herbs even once, but on this night we dipthem twice?"4. "Why is it that on all other nights we eat eithersitting or reclining, but on this night we eat in areclining position?"

Answer: We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and the L-

rd, our G-d, took us out from there with a strong hand andwith an outstretched arm. If the Holy One, blessed be He,had not taken our fathers out of Egypt, then we, ourchildren and our children's children would have remainedenslaved to Pharaoh in Egypt. Even if all of us were wise, all of us understanding, all of us knowing the Torah, wewould still be obligated to discuss the exodus from Egypt;and everyone who discusses the exodus from Egypt atlength is praiseworthy.

    The Four Sons

The Torah commands theIsraelites four times to teach

their children about theExodus from Egypt. Therefore, in the Passover seder, there is a lesson about four sons: One wise, one wicked, one simple and one who does not know how to ask aquestion.

What does the wise son ask? "What do all these laws

mean which God has given us?" You should tell himabout all the symbols and laws of Passover.

What does the wicked son say? "What does this drudgerymean to you?" To you and not to him. Since he excludeshimself from his people, if he was there, he would nothave been redeemed.

What does the simple son say? "What is this?" You

should say to him, "With a strong hand the LORD tookme out of Egypt, from the house of slavery."

And the son who is unable to ask, you must teach: "It isbecause of what the Lord did for me when I went freefrom Egypt."

Exodus 13:8-108On the seventh day you must explainto your children, I am celebrating what the LORD did forme when I left Egypt. 9 This annual festival will be avisible sign to you, like a mark branded on your hand oryour forehead. Let it remind you always to recite thisteaching of the LORD: With a strong hand, the LORDrescued you from Egypt. 10 So observe the decree of thisfestival at the appointed time each year.

    Maggid (Retelling the Story)

READER 1: The Israelites were already in the land ofEgypt. They became fertile and multiplied and increased

very greatly, so that the land was filled with them. A newking arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph, andimposed great labor and hardship on the Israelites. Butthe more the Israelites were oppressed, the more theyincreased and spread out. The king then ordered that allnewborn baby boys be killed. The Pharaoh charged allhis people, saying "every boy that is born you shall throw

into the Nile, but let every girl live."

READER 2: A Levite woman conceived and bore a son

and hid him for three months. After that time, sheprepared a wicker basket and laid the child in the basketand placed it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile. The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe in the Nileand saw the basket among the reeds and had her slavegirl fetch the basket. The Pharaoh's daughter took pity onthe child and made him her own son. She named himMoses, explaining, "I drew him out of water."

READER 3: Moses grew and had learned of his heritage. After witnessing an Egyptian beating an Israelite, hestruck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. When

Pharaoh learned of the matter, he sought to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh. He arrived in the land ofMidian, where he married his wife, Zipporah.

    READER 4: A long time

had gone by and the kingof Egypt died. TheIsraelites were groaningunder bondage and criedout to God. God heard theircries. God appeared toMoses in a burning bushtelling him that he woulduse Moses to lead Hispeople out of Egypt into aland "flowing with milk andhoney." So Moses returnedto Egypt and Moses tookthe rod of God with him.

READER 5: Moses and his brother Aaron went to thePharaoh to ask for the release of their people. But thePharaoh's heart was hardened against the Israelites andwould not release them from the bondage of slavery. Each time the Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites go, theland of Egypt came under a great plague. With the tenthand most awful plague, the heart of Pharaoh would be

    pierced.

    Dayenu!

If He had merely brought us out from Egypt, and hadnot carried out judgments against them

If He had merely carried out judgments against them, and not against their idols

If He had merely destroyed their idols, and had notsmitten their first-born

If He had merely smitten their first-born, and had notgiven us their wealth

If He had merely given us their wealth, and had notsplit the sea for us

If He had merely split the sea for us, and had not takenus through it on dry land

If He had merely taken us through the sea on dryland, and had not drowned our oppressors in it

If He had merely drowned our oppressors in it, andhad not supplied our needs in the desert for forty years

If He had merely supplied our needs in the desert forforty years, and had not fed us the manna

If He had merely fed us the manna, and had not given

us the Sabbath day of rest

If He had merely given us the Sabbath, and had not

    brought us before Mount Sinai

If He had merely brought us before Mount Sinai, andhad not given us the Torah

If He had merely given us the Torah, and had notbrought us into the land of Israel

If He had merely brought us into the land of Israel, and had not built for us the Temple

    As believers:

If He had merely provided Yeshua as our Passover, and had not given us abundant life

If He had merely given us abundant life, and had notpromised us eternal life

If He had merely promised us eternal life, and had notcalled us to serve Him

If He had merely called us to serve Him, and had notgiven us the Holy Spirit

If He had merely given us the Holy Spirit, and notpromised us rewards

Every time it seems that the Lord has given us enough,

    He always gives us more!

Ephesians 1:7-8 In him we have redemption through his

blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with theriches of God's grace that he lavished on us with allwisdom and understanding.

John 1:16 For of His fullness we have all received oneblessing after another.

    Three Essentials

Rabbi Gamaliel used to say:Whoever does not discuss thefollowing three things onPassover has not fulfilled his

    duty:

    #1: Pesach, the Passover lamb

Exodus 12:26-27:26 And whenyour children ask you, 'What does this ceremony mean toyou?' 27 then tell them, 'It is the Passover sacrifice to the

LORD, who passed over the houses of the Israelites inEgypt and spared our homes when he struck down theEgyptians.'"

John 1:29: 29The next day John saw Jesus comingtoward him and said, Look, the Lamb of God, who takesaway the sin of the world!

Yeshua entered Jerusalem on the tenth of Nisan as the

lambs were brought into the households. This alsoidentifies Him as the Pesach lamb (Lang).

    #2: Matzah, the unleavened bread

Exodus 12:39:39 With the dough they had brought fromEgypt, they baked cakes of unleavened bread. Thedough was without yeast because they had been drivenout of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food forthemselves.

Leaven in bread causes grain products to decay overtime. Bread made without leaven, matzah, never decays. So it is with sin: it leads to death when it works in us.Without sin, we never decay (Lang, p. 37)

    Matzah

#3: Marror, the bitter herbs (horseradish)

Exodus 1:14:14 They made their lives bitter with hardlabor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in thefields; in all their hard labor the Egyptians used themruthlessly.

    Psalm 118

1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;his love endures forever.

2 Let Israel say:"His love endures forever."

3 Let the house of Aaron say:

    "His love endures forever."

4 Let those who fear the LORD say:"His love endures forever."

5 In my anguish I cried to the LORD,and he answered by setting me free.

6 The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?

7 The LORD is with me; he is my helper.I will look in triumph on my enemies.

8 It is better to take refuge in the LORD

    than to trust in man.

9 It is better to take refuge in the LORDthan to trust in princes.

10 All the nations surrounded me,but in the name of the LORD I cut them off.

11 They surrounded me on every side, but in the name of the LORD I cut them off.

12 They swarmed around me like bees, but they died out as quickly as burning thorns;in the name of the LORD I cut them off.

13 I was pushed back and about to fall, but the LORD helped me.

14 The LORD is my strength and my song;he has become my salvation.

15 Shouts of joy and victoryresound in the tents of the righteous:"The LORD's right hand has done mighty things!

16 The LORD's right hand is lifted high;the LORD's right hand has done mighty things!"

17 I will not die but live, and will proclaim what the LORD has done.

18 The LORD has chastened me severely, but he has not given me over to death.

    19 Open for me the gates of righteousness;

I will enter and give thanks to the LORD.

20 This is the gate of the LORDthrough which the righteous may enter.

21 I will give you thanks, for you answered me;you have become my salvation.

23 the LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.

24 This is the day the LORD has made;let us rejoice and be glad in it.

25 O LORD, save us;O LORD, grant us success.

26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD.From the house of the LORD we bless you.

27 The LORD is God,and he has made his light shine upon us.With boughs in hand, join in the festal processionup to the horns of the altar.

28 You are my God, and I will give you thanks;you are my God, and I will exalt you.
