Halbach ribbons are clearly attractive. Trendy design, sales-promotional presentations and fashionable variety characterise the range. However, there is far more to these ribbons, some of which are a mere 5 mm wide. The quality can be immediately felt in the hand. This expresses unseen aspects of the longstanding Halbach company – such as the continuous product development. New materials are used which correspond to the ecological standards of our times. As a consequence, the processing of these products is not only gentle on the environment, but also on the health of the employees. These are drawn from the region and proud to work at a company that is now enjoying success in its third generation. This is a highly motivating factor. Made in Germany: it is not just the location that counts, it is also the attitude.

Offensichtlich attraktiv sind die Bänder aus dem Hause Halbach. Trendiges Design, verkaufsfördernde Präsen­tationen sowie modische Vielfalt kennzeichnet das Sortiment. Jedoch in einem Band von manchmal nur 5 mm Breite steckt viel mehr! Wer es berührt, spürt sofort die Qualität. Sie bringt unsichtbare Aspekte des Traditions unternehmens Halbach zum Ausdruck – zum Beispiel die stetige Produktentwicklung. Es werden neue Materialien eingesetzt, die den Ökostandards unserer Zeit entsprechen. So wie der Verarbeitungsprozess an sich nicht nur die Umwelt, sondern auch die Gesundheit der Mitarbeiter schont. Die kommen aus der Region und sind stolz, in einem Unternehmen zu arbeiten, das bereits in der dritten Generation erfolgreich ist. Das ist Motivation pur. Made in Germany: Nicht nur der Standort, sondern auch der Standpunkt zählt.

… Markus Türscherl? „Geht nicht, gibt’s nicht!“ Dies ist der Wahlspruch des 40jährigen Leiters der Betriebstech­nik von Halbach. Zu Recht: Vom verdrehten Fenstergriff bis zur stotternden Maschine löst der versierte Tüftler (fast) jedes technische Problem im Betrieb – ausdauernd, clever und immer gut gelaunt. Auf Anhieb hatte er mit der Lehre zum Werkzeugmecha niker seinen Traumberuf gefunden. Heute, sagt Türscherl, verwirklicht er sich bei Halbach indem er mit seinem dreiköpfigen Team den Be­trieb am Laufen hält. Privat profitiert der findige Bastler von seinem Talent und verwandelt mit seiner Frau ein 100 Jahre altes, marodes Gebäude in ein charakter volles Heim. Seine neue Leidenschaft ist das Schreinerhand­werk. Mit „Herz fürs Holz“ fertigt er die Warenpräsenta­tionen des Showrooms von Halbach.

… Markus Türscherl? “No can do – not with me!“ This is the motto of the 40-year-old Head of Production Engineering at Halbach. And one that he lives up to: from twisted window handles to spluttering machines, the expert tinkerer solves (nearly) every technical problem at the company – persevering, clever and always cheer-ful. An apprenticeship as tool mechanic led to his dream job. Today, says Türscherl, this takes the form of maintaining operations at Halbach with his three-man team. Outside of work the creative inventor and his wife use his talent to transform a decrepit 100-year-old building into a home full of character. His new passion is carpentry. He uses this love of wood to produce the goods presentation fixtures at the Halbach showroom.

Aus dem Stängel der Flachspflanze wird Leinenfaser, die zu den Bastfasern gehört, gewonnen. Durch Spin­nen entsteht das Garn. Die Bast­ oder Leinenfaser ist die älteste von Menschen verwendete Pflanzenfaser. Leinen bezeichnet sowohl das gesponnene Garn als auch das Gewebe. Gewebt wird Leinen in der klassi­schen Leinwandbindung; auch Jacquard, Körper oder andere Bindungsarten sind üblich. Die unregelmäßige Fadenstruktur charakterisiert den Leinenstoff. Damit dieser bei Belastung nicht reißt, muss beim Weben für den Kettfaden ein besonders gleichmäßiges und somit teures Garn eingesetzt werden. Halbach verwendet ein gezwirntes Leinengarn, das besonders stabil und glatt ist. Es eignet sich als Kettgarn und für die Produktion von Kordeln und Gimpen. Darüber hinaus werden Garne in Natur­ oder Leinen optik eingesetzt, wie das trendige Crinklegarn.

Linen fibres, part of the bast fibre family, are obtained from the stalks of the flax plant. The fibres are subsequently spun into yarn. The bast or linen fibre is the oldest plant fibre used by man. Linen refers not only to the spun yarn, but also the fabric. Linen is woven in classic plain weave, with Jacquard, twill and other weaves also common. The linen fabric is characterised by its irregular thread structure. To ensure that this does not break under pressure an especially even and therefore expensive yarn must be used for the warp thread during the weaving process. Halbach uses a twisted linen yarn that is especially stable and smooth. It is suitable for use as a warp thread and for the production of cord and gimp thread. Beyond this, yarns are also used to achieve a natural or linen look, such as the trendy crinkle yarn.

Proximity to nature – many people have this desire in the digital age and follow the Wearable Gardens trend: moss, lichens or dried plants style un-usual jewellery. For example, Mr. Lentz creates miniature window boxes. The designer works in the desert near San Diego and has the greatest respect for nature. He carefully “plants” the greenery for The Redwood Series in wooden boxes, which he makes using non-toxic adhesive and treats with coconut oil. In contrast, the designer Jessica Viola is inspired by the organic formation of natural fibres, combining them with gemstones, yarns and gilded metal to form decorative chains. Perfect for jewellery lovers with an eye for sustain-ability and extravagance.

Der Natur ganz nah sein – diesen Wunsch haben viele im digitalen Zeitalter und folgen dem Trend Wearable Gardens: Moos, Flechten oder getrocknete Pflanzen stylen ausgefallene Schmuckstücke. So entwirft Mr. Lentz Blumenkästen im Miniaturformat. Der Designer arbeitet in der Wüste von San Diego und bringt der Natur höchste Achtung entgegen. Die Fasern entpup­pen sich als weißer oder schwarzer Tee, der während der Zeremonie sein köstliches Aroma entfaltet. Nachhaltig handeln – modern gestalten: beide Aspekte vereint dieses Möbel mühelos. Das Holz stammt aus nachhaltig bewirtschafteten Wäldern, nahe der Manufaktur in Italien. Nach kurzem Transport­weg erhalten die Bretter aus 100% ökologischem Holz ihren Zuschnitt mittels High­Tech­Maschinen. Die werden wiederum ausschließlich mit Sonnenenergie betrieben … das ist kein Märchen, das ist gelebte Nachhaltigkeit. Dass die Oberfläche des charakterstarken Möbels nicht chemisch behandelt wurde, ist selbstverständlich. Die satte gelbe Farbe erhält Medici durch Beize. Da lacht nicht nur die Sonne …

This is evident at the Italian label Mattiazzi with the Medici chair, the current design of star designer konstantin Grcic. Sustainable actions – modern creativity: both aspects are effortlessly combined in this furniture. The wood is sourced from sustainably managed forests, near the manufacture in Italy. After a short transport route the 100%-ecological boards are cut to size using high-tech machines. These, in turn, are powered exclusively by solar energy … this is no fairytale, this is sustain ability in action. It goes without saying that the surface of the distinctive furniture receives no chemical treatment. Medici receives its lush yellow colouring from staining. Good news for everyone …

Sommerlich: Libellen und Blüten aus FilzSummery: dragonflies and flowers made from felt

Der Sommer in Valencia hat viele schöne Seiten: das spek­takuläre Hafenviertel, die futuristische „Stadt der Künste und der Wissenschaft“ sowie malerische Orangenhaine. Die versorgen große Teile Europas mit Vitamin C, das in Form von „Aqua de Valencia“ besonders mundet.

Für vier Personen benötigt man:200 ml frisch gepressten Orangensaft, eine Flasche Sekt, 10 cl Wodka, 10 cl Gin und Zucker nach Geschmack. Alle Zutaten vermischen und kalt stellen. Zum Servieren in Sektkelche geben und je mit einer halben Orangenscheibe dekorieren. Salud!

There are many attractive sides to summer in Valencia: the spectacular port district, the futuristic ‘city of art and science’ and picturesque orange groves. These supply large areas of Europe with vitamin C, particularly tasty in the form of Aqua de Valencia.

For four people you need: 200 ml of freshly-squeezed orange juice, one bottle of sparkling wine, 10 cl vodka, 10 cl gin and sugar to taste. Mix all of the ingredients and chill. Serve in champagne goblets and decorate each glass with half an orange slice. Salud!

Kathy Klein legt Mandalas aus farbintensiven Blumen und spendet dem Betrachter Augenblicke der Ruhe. Die amerikanische Künstlerin wählte den Kunstnamen dan­mala; komponiert aus den Sanskritbegriffen dãn (Geber) und mãlã (Blumengirlande). Den schöpferischen Prozess ihrer Arbeit verdankt sie der Meditation. In sich ruhend sammelt und legt sie natürliches Material zu mandala­ähnlichen Bildern. Als Foto verewigt wird das Arrange­ment zur Augenweide, die im Netz zu bestaunen und zu erwerben ist.

Kathy Klein creates mandalas from brightly-coloured flowers, gifting the observer moments of tranquillity. The American artist composed the name danmala; consisting of the Sanskrit terms dãn (giver) and mãlã (floral garland). She owes the creative process of her work to meditation. In this tranquil state she collects and arranges flowers and natural materials to form mandala-like images. Immortalised as a photo, the arrangement becomes an eye-opener, to be marvelled at and purchased on the internet.

The vases and candlesticks look as if they are made of ceramic. And Dutch artist Siba Sahabi does use a wheel to make them – one of the oldest tools known to mankind. However, her material is felt! She works it herself, dyeing it in a way that lends the pieces a changing impression. She adroitly turns long, narrow strips into voluminous, classic-looking vessels. Siba Sahabi is an accomplished interlocutor between cultures and eras.

Function and fantasy frequently form a perfect duo in product design. An example: the “Flower Trap” vase with a still life of wild flowers in spherical glass. Support comes in the form of a hand-woven basket made from wafer-thin birch, reminiscent of the roots of the flower arrangement. The label utopia & utility was founded in 2012 with the goal of enriching life via attractive, handmade items. This approach is one that Halbach is happy to follow, offering creative souls a wonderful material in the form of carefully-worked ribbons made from natural raffia. Whether they are round or flat: the maize straw lends a tropical touch to gift wrapping, table decorations and plants.

Fast vergessen und jetzt wieder entdeckt: Flechtstruk­turen. Ihnen ist der Künstler und gelernte Korbmacher Klaus Titze auf der Spur. Das traditionelle Handwerk bewahrt er durch künstlerische Interpretationen, zum Beispiel mit der Serie „fences“. In spezieller Rolltechnik gefertigte Zäune zitieren vorindustrielle Produktion und fügen sich mit überdimensionaler Flechtstruktur harmonisch in die Natur ein.Halbach wiederum spielt ganz anders mit der Textur von Korb, die eigentlich Stabilität suggeriert. In diesem Frühjahr und Sommer schmücken weiche, regelmäßige Flechtmuster in Naturtönen Kissenbezüge und Vor-hangstoffe. Ein stylisch-eleganter Effekt für moderne Stoff- oder Ledermöbel, der natürliches Flair verbreitet.

Her sturdy Parcelbag looks like a package that is constantly on the move. Made completely from cowhide, the colour and surface resemble the practical packing paper. The handles are decorated in a silk screen process to look like adhesive tape. Mobile, tissues and tablet PC fit inside snugly … and away goes the parcel! Halbach has also discovered packing paper. The sturdy tags have a retro charm that suits every colour and every pattern of a present or table decoration. Sophisticated wrapping paper receives a great contrast with these labels; a jar of homemade marmalade the appeal of a manufacture.
