“I was very impressed with the quality of service offered to me, the way all of the doctors and specialists worked quickly together, and above all the total professionalism of all concerned who worked towards the best health outcomes for me.”

Good health is just across the road
Lengthy trips into town to see health
professionals are just another worry that
home owners at Halcyon Waters can cross
off their list with the opening of the Mater
Health Centre, Hope Island. Just a short
stroll across the road, the Mater Health
Centre is the Gold Coast’s first multi-
disciplinary medical centre and home to a
comprehensive range of health services.
Specialist suites, allied health services,
radiology/medical imaging, the Mater
Pharmacy and Mater Pathology Collection
Centre are just some of the services offered
along with general practitioners
(QMedical), dental practitioners, podiatry
and physiotherapy practices.
Already home owners like Carol Samuel are
making the most of the close proximity and
the quality of care on offer at the centre.
After returning from a recent overseas
trip, Carol found out first hand the value
of having the Mater Health Centre at her
doorstep. Initially she required the services
of a dentist who then had to refer her to
a specialist to treat complications to the
initial complaint. She was then referred to
another specialist, a cardiologist, in order to
ensure that the long-term infection had not
damaged her heart.
“Thanks to these professionals I have
recovered completely with no ill effects.”
said Carol.
So for the home owners at Halcyon Waters,
whether it’s the doctor, the physio, the
podiatrist, the dentist or just a quick stroll
over to pick up a prescription, long queues
and waits are a distant thing of the past.

Gary and Sue Spicer
The art of ‘retirement living’Those of you who thought moving into a
‘retirement community’ meant endless days
sitting about, waiting for the next session of
Bingo need to think again! Take Gary and
Sue Spicer for example, the busy couple
have called Halcyon Waters home now
for over three years, and the Hope Island
lifestyle community is a perfect fit for their
busy lifestyles.
Like many of the home owners, the Spicers
pursue a broad range of interests both inside
and outside the Halcyon community. Both
are heavily involved with the University
of the Third Age (U3A), which essentially
delivers online learning via the Internet to
older people and disabled younger people
anywhere in the world. Sue, a former
President now takes classes on family history
and gardening, while Gary has taken over the
reins as President and attends classes on art,
computer and the history of aviation.
Speaking of aviation, Gary is a pilot who
spent 40 years with Air New Zealand,
commencing his career as an engineer before
gaining his Captains Wings. Throughout his
long and distinguished career, Gary captained
everything from Lockhead Electra’s to
B747-400’s, logging millions of miles in the
process. Now ‘retired’, Gary still gets plenty
of ‘air time’, in the ‘Experimental Amateur
Built Aircraft’ that he built himself, flying out
of the Mason Field airfield that is located
We call Halcyon home
This is our story
just 10 kilometres from home. He also finds
time to do pilot instruction, training, technical
counselling, runs a course on procedures and
supervises the construction of other amateur
built aircraft.
When she is not travelling or working with
the U3A, Sue likes the relaxed, tranquil
ambience at Halcyon Waters. “My favourite
place is down by the lake at Celebration
Park. I love the wildlife that gathers there, the
kangaroos and the variety of birdlife, it’s a
very peaceful, serene area,” she said.
Sue also enjoys the facilities on offer at
the ‘Leisure Club’, using the pool for some
afternoon exercise. Gary plays indoor bowls,
is a member of the Striders Club and usually
spends one day a week in the Shed, using
the range of power tools and equipment on
various projects he is working on.
Now that mowing the lawn is a thing of
the past, Gary has more time for another
great passion that began 35 years ago doing
technical drawings while he was studying
as an engineer. Although Halcyon Waters
has its own Art Studio, tucked away in a
corner of his garage is Gary’s studio where
he paints in acrylic on canvas, producing
works that he exhibits and that hang in a
few reception areas around Australia. “I
turned off the switch for 35 years then I
went to drawing class, starting out with
pastels and watercolours before using acrylics
and developing my own style and thought
process”, said Gary.
The Spicers are self confessed travellers,
particularly Sue who admits to inheriting
her love of the wanderlust from her father.
In fact Gary often jokes that Sue has now
clocked up more kilometres in the air than
he has.
For Gary and Sue the fork in the road came
after returning home to overgrown lawns
and a long list of home maintenance chores
after an extended overseas trip. “I remember
thinking, there must be an easier way in life”,
Gary recalled. After considering living in a
high rise apartment, Sue suggested taking
a look at Halcyon Waters and the rest is
history. Asked about their new lifestyle, the
Spicers advice is clear and simple. Make the
move earlier rather than later so you can
free up time to do the things that enrich
your life while you still can.
Below are some examples of Gary’s artwork.
Life begins at Halcyon
Inspirational home owner Graham Flack has
been in the saddle again, cycling nearly 900
kilometres across Southeast Queensland and
Northern New South Wales in the Bike 4
Burns charity ride. His fourth consecutive
year participating in the event Graham,
a retired ‘firie’, has ridden over 3600km
(not including training rides) and raised
almost $9,000 which directly supports
burns research initiatives at Brisbane’s Royal
Children’s Hospital.
This year Graham joined 49 current and
retired fire fighters for the challenging ride.
“The course signifies that many children
treated for burns at the hospital have to
endure long journeys in order to receive
treatment,” said Graham. To assist his
efforts, a special function held at Halcyon
Waters helped raise an impressive $4,510
including $1,100 in bar-proceeds which
Halcyon proudly donated to Graham’s
cause. “I am very grateful to Halcyon for

their donation and support over the past
four years, and to the home owners who
attended on the night and showed their
support,” he said.
Halcyon Joint Managing Director Bevan
Geissmann said the company was happy
to sponsor the initiative. “Graham is an
inspiration to all who know him and his
ongoing commitment to the Bike 4 Burns
ride is evidence of his passion for the cause,”
he said. “Community is the foundation of
the Halcyon brand, so we thought it fitting
to bring our homeowners together in
support of Graham’s ride.”
Halcyon Landing
Great news from the Sunshine Coast
and Halcyon Landing where 30 homes
are under construction and the first
home owners are just about to move in.
‘Early Birds’ have been quick to snap up
some great deals with more than $16.5
million in total sales.
The new Bli Bli community has also been
receiving rave reviews for its affordability,
sustainable living qualities and innovative
design. In another first, Halcyon Landing will
also be connected to the NBN (National
Broadband Network), up to three years
ahead of surrounding suburbs, making it the
first over 50’s community in Queensland to
have access to the super fast data service.
Purchasers have been quick to recognise the
value for money and lifestyle opportunities
on offer with 40 of the 8-Star energy rated
homes already sold in record time.
For more information about the latest
release of homes at Halcyon Landing
contact the Sales Office on 1800 050 050.
Already the project’s initial stage, the Foundation Release, has sold out and the second release of homes, the Heritage Release is now more than 60% sold with record sales totalling $7.2 million in April alone.
Another first for Halcyon

With the Olympic Games completed, the
Halcyon community has been breaking a
few records of its own, fielding a team of
140 home owners and staff to compete in
the recent Gold Coast Marathon. This is
the fourth consecutive year that Halcyon
has entered a team, but it’s the first time
the group has mustered more than 40
competitors. Most entered the 5.7km
challenge, while some opted to have a crack
at the 10km, the half marathon and even the
full 42km marathon!
Spearheaded and inspired by Halcyon
Waters personal trainer Kyleigh Hurle, the
team included six home owners who were
involved in the Halcyon 12-week challenge
that saw participants collectively shed 33kg
over the course of the programme.
For the first time, the team also included
home owners from Halcyon Parks and
future home owners from Halcyon Landing,
who made the trip down to participate.
The Sunshine Coasters were led by Halcyon
Parks Community Manager Kate Clark,
who ran the full marathon. Kate is a liver
transplant recipient who has represented
Australia in athletics at the World Transplant
Games three times.
“Since starting work here, I’ve realised that
growing older is a privilege denied to many,
so I encourage all our home owners to
live their later years to the fullest,” said Ms
Clark. “Running the marathon is my way
of showing the home owners that we can
achieve our fitness goals despite our physical
ailments.”
At the finish line weary limbs were soon
forgotten in the corporate marquee with
fresh fruit, cold water and hamburgers.
Whether it was a personal challenge, having
fun with friends or trying something for the
first time, everyone agreed that it was a
thoroughly rewarding experience.
For the record, in the 5.7km challenge,
Halcyon team members placed first, second
and third in the men’s 70-74 age category.
Astonishingly, out of the 35 competitors
in this category, Halcyon team members
filled ten out of the first eleven places! The
team also placed first in the men’s 60-64
and women’s 65-69 and second in the
men’s 65-69 age groups. Great results were
achieved overall, with a host of personal
bests and personal firsts for many.
