EDITORIAL

Two world-class trade fairs are scheduled for September, Automechanika in Frankfurt and IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hanover. Haldex will attend both events but with a different emphasis at each. At Automechanika, we will focus not only on well-established Haldex components but also on Grau and Reman, our new complementary brands and for the very first time Haldex will present the brand new webshop for our Select partners.

At IAA, we expect the new 22.5-inch disc brake to attract considerable attention. In this respect, IAA will once again be the stage for a Haldex premiere: the first models of the innovative ModulT disc brake debuted at IAA 2010. Since that time, ModulT production has surpassed one million units — a success story with no end in sight. In addition, the market is very positive.

At a pre-IAA press workshop in June, Matthias Wissmann, president of the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), which is organizing the event, spoke about the current situation. Highlights: In western Europe last year, new registrations of heavy goods vehicles over 6 tonnes reached 259,000, an increase of 14 percent. In 2016, an additional eight percent increase is projected and there are also signs of further growth in trailers and semitrailers. In this issue of Haldex Magazine, we preview the upcoming Automechanika and IAA trade fairs. We also hope you like the new, fresh look of the magazine and welcome your comments.

Please enjoy Haldex Magazine with our compliments.

Transport Management System

Technological Improvement

Haldex has reached agreement with Zhejiang Vie Science and Technology Co., Ltd. (VIE), a Chinese component manufac-turer, on a fifty-fifty joint venture for the shared development and production of electromechanical braking systems. The focus is the booming Chinese market for electrically-pow-ered buses. Robust growth is expected: by 2020, annual production of electric buses may exceed 140,000 units. The new systems, which do not use compressed air, will be just as quiet as they are powerful and offer greater comfort for passengers and drivers. The Shanghai-based joint venture company is called Haldex VIE (China) Electro Mechanical Brake Systems Co., Ltd. Haldex has introduced a transport management system (TMS) at its central European warehouse. The system will bring greater efficiency to all ship-ping and delivery operations and help achieve maximum reliability for deliveries. As part of its procedure, TMS seeks the best logistics provider for each shipment and with its Track and Trace function, shipments can be traced at any time.

Automechanika is held every two years, alternating with IAA Commercial Vehicles, at the Frankfurt Trade Fair in Frank-furt. Automechanika, which is strictly a trade fair, is growing in popularity: the 4,660 exhibitors from 71 countries who

attended in September 2014 set a new record. Around 140,000 visi-tors from over 170 countries flocked to the fair, which, in quantitative terms alone, speaks volumes about its international importance. The Frankfurt event will also serve as a stage and contact point for Haldex: Hall 6.0, Stand D46.

Haldex products such as the S-ABA automatic brake adjuster — of-ten copied but never matched at more than 80 million units — await visitors to the Haldex stand. The EB+ Gen3 electronic braking system with additional ports and expanded functionality will also be on hand as well as a touchscreen monitor for accessing supplementary videos

and information on the following topics: EB+ Load Transfer (intelligent axle load management), EB+ Soft Docking (ramp approach assistance), TPMS (tyre pressure monitoring system), Fleet+ (trailer data analysis) and EB+ Info Centre (trailer diagnostic unit). Rounding off the exhibit will be spare parts for ModulT disc brakes and air-drier cartridges (HFC and MTC+) .But not to be neglected will be the premiere of Grau and Reman, Haldex’s complementary brands first introduced in April 2016.

The name Grau is reminiscent of Graubremse, a German company from Heidelberg that as part of Midland-Grau merged with Haldex at the end of the 1990s. The Reman brand stands for ‘remanufactured parts’. Needless to say, all complementary brand parts also come with a full warranty. Göran Jarl, head of Aftermarket at Haldex, is excited about the company’s participation at Automechanika. ‘As ever, the Grau brand has a very good reputation in Europe, one that we are able to

SERVICES

At the beginning of 2000, Haldex launched the Haldex Select network. What started in France has spread throughout Eu-rope. Haldex Select is a close partnership between Haldex and its key distributors. The benefit for customers is the best

possible service in terms of part availability and expert advice. ‘About 1,400 distributors and 1,000 service centres have joined the network’, says Göran Jarl, head of Aftermarket at Haldex. ‘As for network size and density, we have, in practical terms, reached our objective. Our task now is to maintain quality at a high level’.

The network supports mainly regional and medium-to-large business-es. To guarantee uniform quality, every Haldex Select partner is audited by Haldex. Criteria include adequate warehousing and freight capacity, modern workshop and IT equipment and well-trained personnel. In return, Haldex offers its partners comprehensive support, such as bonus systems, expanded database access, marketing promotions or training options. In other words, the Haldex Select seal of quality is continually updated and maintained at state-of-the-art standards. Customers can locate their nearest Haldex Select partner on the Haldex website via the ‘Distributors & Service

SERVICES

A distributor search function and the Findex online product catalogue are just two of the many useful services at www.haldex.com

On the new website, you’ll find a completely revised Findex product catalogue. Findex offers quick and easy access to all Haldex compo-nents, from ABS systems to accessories. Likewise, products from the recently introduced Grau and Reman brands are also included in the database. Each entry not only states the product’s price but also pro-vides documents, brochures and installation instructions in a number of languages.

At Automechanika Haldex will present its new e-commerce platform for the very first time. The webshop will enable Haldex Select partners to order products from the Findex Catalogue online or to retrieve and modify or renew previous orders. Select the desired mode of delivery and the parts will be on their way.

RAISE THE CURTAIN ON THE

IAA COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

In western Europe, trucks are back in demand, and business is booming. A dazzling array of new products is promised for IAA 2016. At Haldex, the ModulT family is geared for growth.

Driven by ideas’ is the theme of the 66th IAA Commercial Ve-hicles trade fair. The ‘who’s who’ of the transport world will again come together in Hanover, 22–29 September 2016. The mood is upbeat: ‘The western European commercial vehicle

market has put new wind in the sails of IAA – that much is certain. Last year, 259,000 heavy goods vehicles of more than 6 tonnes were newly registered. That represented hefty growth of 14 percent’, emphasised VDA President Matthias Wissman at the IAA international press work-shop in June. Such growth is not a fluke he affirmed: ‘The recovery process is stable and robust. For 2016, we expect eight percent growth’.

The Haldex stand, which features the slogan ‘A world of safer vehicles’, can be found in Hall 26, Stand C03 at IAA. From the ModulT series of air disc brakes, the DBT 22 MD and DBT 22 LT variants will make their world debut. The fundamental advantages of the ModulT family — lightweight, strong performance, stable and easy to service — also apply to the new 22.5-inch disc brake for trucks, buses and trailers. pearance in Hanover will be the DBT 19 LT 19.5-inch trailer brake with a maximum brake torque of 18 kNm. With this latest trio — DBT 19 LT production began in 2015 — Haldex has achieved significant progress in advancing the concept of the ModulT modular disc brake. At the top of the current range is the heavy-duty version of the 22.5-inch model with a maximum brake torque of 30 kNm. This return to Hanover with new models in tow completes a circle: Haldex first introduced the ModulT disc brake family with its character-istic single-tappet mechanism at IAA Commercial Vehicles 2010.

The ModulT, however, is only one area of focus. With the most recent generation of its electronic braking system (EB+ Gen3), systems tailored for foreign markets, the universally deployable TEM Safe Parking park and shunt valve and, of course, the classic Haldex automatic brake adjuster, Haldex is showcasing itself at IAA 2016 as a multifaceted, international manufacturer and welcomes visitors from all parts of the world.

Autumn/Winter 2016 Nr. 33 Haldex Magazine 11

In March 2016, Haldex reached its goal: More than one million ModulT disc brakes had been produced by the Haldex plant in Landskrona, Sweden. And there is

no end in sight to this success story. In fact, the next million may happen even more quickly, with the new 22.5-inch model leading the way for ModulT in the United States.

The ModulT has overcome all reservations about the single-tappet

mechanism.

Haldex introduced the ModulT disc brake at IAA Commercial Vehicles 2010 in Hanover. ‘That was the beginning of a new era for pneumatical-ly-actuated disc brakes’, says Jeff Stokes, who is responsible worldwide for air disc brakes at Haldex. ‘The ModulT air disc brake is the per-fect fleet solution for anyone who values high performance, stability and low maintenance

costs as well as an overall lower total cost of ownership’. In the six years since its launch, not only is there a bigger product range but cus-

tomer and market growth has been steady. The ModulT is used by fa-mous axle manufacturers such as SAF-Holland and Jost/Daimler and by the trailer manufacturer Krone on its own axles. In China, the 22.5-inch model is already being used on tractors and trucks.

A trademark feature in 2010, just like today: two slide pins plus a special single-tappet mecha-nism. From the extremely lean architecture of the entire structure to the monobloc brake calliper, the ModulT has been designed to weigh not a single gram more than necessary. Even so, there’s much more to it than weight and cost: From the outset, strength and reliability combined with ease of maintenance and repair have been of primary importance in its specifications. Today,

One success after after: The ModulT family is now conquering the U.S. market.
