Today’s Game… The Kannapolis Intimidators play for a series split today against the Lexington Legends at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Kannapolis has not lost consecutive games to the Legends this season. SALly Standings… With Wednesday’s loss, the Intimidators (21-17) lost their grip on second place in the North Division second half standings as Lakewood (22-17) snuck ahead of Kannapolis by a half-game. Kannapolis is still 1.5 games behind first place Hickory (23-16), which dropped its second straight game last night. The Crawdads lead the BlueClaws by 1.0 game in the standings. Kannapolis (58-48) is now a game behind Hagerstown (60- 48) in the overall standings with the Suns 3.5 games behind Hickory (63-44). If Hickory wins both halves, the division’s wild card playoff team will be the one with the second-best overall record. Intimidating Starter… Spencer Arroyo, who turns 23 next week, makes his 21 st start for Kannapolis coming off back-to-back losses for the first time since late May. The lone lefty starter has a better ERA on the road than at home, 3.38 to 3.95. He has twice faced the Legends this season, going 1-0 with 3.27 ERA (4 ER/11 IP), striking out 13 batters while walking one. Arroyo entered the season rated as the No. 30 Prospect in the White Sox system by Baseball America. Prior to losing his last two starts, Arroyo had won three straight. He has made 11 quality starts in 20 games started this season. Arroyo is fifth in the SAL with 124.0 innings pitched this season. A Pitching Legend… Tanner Bushue, 20, began the season as one of the more dominant pitchers in the SAL, going 5-0 with a 3.11 ERA in his first six starts (13 ER/37.2 IP). Kannapolis tagged him with his first loss of the season, knocking him from a May 12 game after one inning. Bushue spent the majority of June and July on the shelf, and worked three rehab appearances with the GCL Astros before returning to the Legends July 30. In Bushue’s first start back, he went 5.0 IP, allowing two runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and no walks in a no decision against Rome. Last Time Out… Behind the pitching of Carlos Quevedo, the Lexington Legends defeated the Kannapolis Intimidators 5-1 Wednesday night. Quevedo (7-4) tossed seven shutout innings. He allowed six hits, struck out seven batters and walked none to earn the victory. Lexington opened the scoring with one run in the third inning. Bryce Lane led off with a single, advanced to second on Roberto Pena's ground out, and scored on a two-out single by Jay Austin. The Legends added three runs in the fifth. Lane led off with a double, the first of five straight hits by the Legends. Lane moved to third on Pena's single, and scored on a single by Hector Rodriguez, who was playing his first game for Lexington since being transferred from Tri-City in the New York-Penn League. Austin followed with a single to load the bases. Ben Orloff then singled to score Pena, and the bases remained loaded. Mike Kvasnicka hit into a force play at second as Rodriguez scored to give the Legends a 4-0 lead. Lexington added another run in the seventh. Leadoff hitter Jay Austin was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Orloff sacrificed him to third, and Kvansicka's grounder to shortstop drove in the run. Kannapolis scored its only run in the ninth. Marcus Semien singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on Drew Lee's fly out. He scored on Orloff's fielding error on a ground ball hit by Miguel Gonzalez. Intimidators' starter Matt Heidenreich (9-7) was handed the loss. Intimidator Tidbits High Speed Chase… Reliever Chase Cooney tossed two scoreless innings in Wednesday’s win at Lexington, giving him 12 scoreless outings in his last 13 games for Kannapolis. Cooney has allowed just one run in his last 13 games, spanning 18 innings. In 11 appearances in April and May, Cooney was 1-2 with a 9.35 ERA (18 ER/17.1 IP), but since a stint on the DL in early June, Cooney is 1-0 with a 1.45 ERA (3 ER/18.2 IP) and a save in one save opportunity in 12 games in June and July. Black Jacks… Dan Black turned in the best game by an Intimidators DH this season in Tuesday’s 3-2 win in Lexington. Black went 3-4 with two home runs and an RBI-double to drive in all three Intimidators runs. It was Black’s second multi-home run game this season – both coming in Lexington. Black joins Trayce Thompson and Brady Shoemaker as the only Intimidators with multi-homer games this year, all three with two. Turning On The Power… Dan Black’s first inning home run ended the Intimidators longest home run drought of the season, a nine-game stretch since July 22 at Asheville where Kannapolis hit three homers. The long ball drought was the longest of the season, passing the previous drought of eight games from April 29 through May 10. Ful-Phil-ing From The Start… Phil Negus continues to show that last year’s injury-shorten season is a distant memory. Negus made his sixth start of the year for Kannapolis on Tuesday, tossing 5.0 innings and allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and a season-high eight strikeouts in a no decision against the Legends (his career-high strikeouts is nine, set 7/2/09 with Bristol against Johnson City). Kannapolis improved to 6-0 when Negus starts this season. Hold Me Closer… Closer Jake Wilson tossed a scoreless, hitless ninth inning for his eighth save of the season and second in three days. Wilson threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning vs. Asheville on Sunday, July 31, for his first save in more than a month. Wilson had last saved a game for the Intimidators on June 30 against Hickory, but did not pitch in a save situation against until July 31. A South-“Sider” Prospect… Reliever Wes Whisler suffered his first loss as an Intimidators on Monday at Lexington, working 2.0 relief innings and allowing the Legends’ winning run to score on an error on his watch. Despite dropping to 0-1 on the season, Whisler lowered his ERA with this appearance and has still worked 13 scoreless outings over his last 15 games with Kannapolis. In his first outing with Kannapolis on May 25, the side-arming southpaw gave up four runs in a third of an inning, but has been a lockdown reliever for the Intimidators since, maintaining an ERA of 1.37 (3 ER/19.2 IP). The Errors Of There Ways… The Intimidators took advantage of six Legends errors for five unearned runs on Monday night, leading 7-6 going into the bottom of the ninth before the Intimidators committed throwing errors of their own. Kannapolis worked eight error-free innings in Monday’s loss to the Legends but committed a pair of catastrophic blunders, once in the ninth inning to allow Lexington to tie the game and again in the 11th inning to allow the Legends to win. No Wrangling Rangel… Third baseman Rangel Ravelo went 0-2 with two walks in Sunday’s win vs. Asheville, snapping a 20-game hitting streak (.407, 33-81) between Bristol and Kannapolis from July 6-30. He has made an immediate impact for Kannaplis since replacing Juan Silverio, who was promoted to Class A-Advanced Winston-Salem. Ravelo hit safely in his first nine games (.459, 17-37) after hitting safely in his last 11 games with the Bristol White Sox. Church Is In Session… Reliever Steven Upchurch flourished in his returns to the bullpen, tossing five innings for a win against Ashevlle on July 31, the longest outing by an Intimidators reliever this season, topping Paul Burnside’s 4.2 innings at Delmarva on April 12. The Mobile, Ala., native allowed one run while scattering eight hits with two walks and five strikeouts for his second relief win of the year. Upchurch struggled in 12 starts, going 1-7 with a 7.29 ERA compared to his time in the bullpen where he is now 2-2 with a 1.75 ERA with two saves in two chances over nine relief outings.

Walk Off Loss… Monday’s walk off loss in Lexington was the first for the Intimidators in three months, having not been defeated in the final at bat since losing at Hickory on May 2 on a Christian Villanueva home run in the bottom of the ninth. Kannapolis has played 12 games decided in the final at-bat this season, going 7-5. Bachanov struck out the side in the first inning and matched a career-high with 3.0 innings on the mound, allowing one run on two hits with a walk and four strikeouts in a no decision. He twice pitched 3.0 innings during his rookie season with the Arizona League Angels in 2009. If the Shoe Fits… The Intimidators promoted OF Brady Shoemaker to A-Advanced Winston-Salem last week. At the time, Shoemaker led the SAL in hits (119) and games played (99), ranked second in runs scored (68), tied for second in doubles (28), third in total bases (184), fourth in batting average (.319, 119-373), and tied for fourth with 65 RBI. In six games with the Dash, Shoemaker is 3-22 (.136) with six RBI. Sweet Home Alabama… Former Intimidators 2B Ross Wilson made his Double-A debut with the Birmingham Barons on Saturday at the Hoover Met, the same facility where Wilson played high school football while featured on MTV’s “Two-A-Days” with Hoover (Ala.) High School. While with the Intimidators, Wilson hit .274 (58-212) with two home runs and 19 RBI in 57 games and earned South Atlantic League All-Star honors before suffering an injury at Greensboro on June 10. He went on the DL after the SAL All-Star Break and returned to action with Advanced Rookie Bristol to continue his rehab, hitting .238 (10-42) with seven RBI in 11 games. In four games with the Barons, he is 2-15 (.133) with an RBI. Reed It And Weep… Reliever Addison Reed began the season with Kannapolis and has jumped three levels into the bullpen of Triple-A Charlotte, making his debut with the Knights on July 26 against Indianapolis. He is 0-0 with a 2.45 ERA in Triple-A (1 ER/3.2 IP) The San Diego State product who drew comparisons to fellow Aztec Stephen Strasburg posted a 1.13 ERA in four games with the Intimidators before moving on to Winston-Salem where he went 2-0 with a 1.59 ERA in 15 games for the Dash.
