A. Reading Comprehension (20 marks)

Read the following passage carefully.

The Naughty Leprechaun

In the dark, wet, slippery rocks near the great castle of Oranmore there

lived a leprechaun called Dobby. (Par 1)

Dobby was not an ordinary leprechaun. In fact, he was

very, very different from all the other fairy folk who

lived there. They were all jolly, green, little elves who

sang and danced and laughed and played their fiddles

until the early hours, but Dobby was round and fat and

very bad tempered. He had sharp, twisted teeth like sticks of barley

sugar and big, flat feet like the oars of a boat. Dobby wasn’t green like

the other leprechauns. He was purple, as shiny and purple as a

blackcurrant. He was also very, very naughty. (Par 2)

Every day he went out to see what mischief he could get himself into.

One sunny morning he decided to go to the high rocks and steal some

seagull eggs. He thought it would be funny to watch the angry seagulls

screaming and circling overhead as they searched for their eggs. (Par 3)

On his way along the rocky path Dobby came upon a rabbit hole. He

stopped and a wicked smile spread across his face. Quickly he began to

stuff pebbles and shells and seaweed and sand into the hole until it was

filled right up. When the rabbit came he was very angry because he

couldn’t get into his home. The naughty leprechaun just laughed wickedly

and skipped off down the rocky path. (Par 4)

A little further on, the naughty leprechaun came across a little mound of

hazelnuts. Dobby picked up the nuts and one by one threw them into the

river. When the squirrel saw what Dobby was doing, he was very angry

because it had taken him two hours to gather all those nuts. The naughty

leprechaun just laughed wickedly and skipped off down the rocky path.

(Par 5)

Down the road, Dobby came upon Mrs. Mully’s white cottage. On her

washing line were the cleanest clothes Dobby had ever

seen. They were blowing and billowing in the wind. The

naughty leprechaun smiled wickedly and jumped over the

little white fence and marched across Mrs. Mully’s garden,

crushing all her lovely flowers as he went. Dobby cut the

clothes line and all the clean washing tumbled down onto

the dirty grass. Then he spied a bucket of milk which he spilled all over

the path. When Mrs. Mully came home and saw what Dobby was doing she

was very angry because it had taken her all morning to wash the clothes

and milk the cow. The naughty leprechaun just laughed wickedly and

skipped off down the rocky path. (Par 6)

Since it was getting late, Dobby decided to take a short cut through the

woods. It was quite dark and Dobby could not see where he was walking.

All of a sudden he felt his foot slip and in a blink of an eye he found

himself falling into a deep, dark hole. He was very scared. He tried to

climb up the sides but it was all in vain. He started to shout for help.

The rabbit, the squirrel and Mrs. Mully all heard the shouting and crying

from their homes and went to see what had happened. When they arrived

and saw Dobby in the hole they all started laughing and didn’t want to

help him. They thought he got just what he deserved. (Par 7)

They left him there for the rest of the night. In the morning all three of

them went back to the hole and found Dobby right where they had left

him. He had learned his lesson and was very sorry about how he had

treated them. He promised them that he would make it up to them. They

helped him out and Dobby was true to his word. He is not a naughty

leprechaun any more. Let’s hope that Dobby will keep his promise! (Par 8)
