Halloween

At first, on 1st November, the Church celebrated All Saints day or All Hallows (Saint) where they prayed for the dead.

There are references to Halloween on the 31 October since 19th Century. From then, this day was known as the night of the zombies, the witches, ghosts, fairies…

So, the name “Halloween” comes from All Hallow Even, the eve (night before) All Hallows day. Therefore, Halloween is the eve of All Saints Day.

Origins of the festival!

Jack-o-lanterns:

The name of jack-o-lanterns comes from a Irish legend. Jack was a man who couldn’t get into the heaven because he was greedy. He couldn’t enter hell either because he tricked the devil. So he had to stay on the earth with a lantern for ever.

American people make empty pumpkins with a face and they put a candle inside them.

Traditions!

Fire:

Formerly, Celts believed that fire could scare evil spirits. For this reason, nowadays, American people put the pumpkin with a candle outside their houses.

Apple Bobbing (Duck-apple):

Romans had a goddess of trees and fruits called Pomona. When they reached Britain, they also introduced this goddess into the culture of Halloween’s day.

Nowadays, people have to bite an apple which is in a bucket with water without using their hands.

Dressing up:

It was believed that, on Halloween’s day, witches and ghosts came to earth. So people dressed up to confuse witches and ghosts. Also, they left a bowl of food outside their houses so evil spirits wouldn’t go in.

Nowadays, people dress up to follow the tradition, make jokes and scare other people.

Trick or treat:

Children in fancy dress costumes knock the doors of their neighbors‘ houses. They say: “Trick or treat” and the householder has to chose one of them. If he chooses trick, children do mischief. But if he chooses treat, he has to give them sweets and candies and they leave happily.

Lesson planning! Aims:

- Listening to their classmates.- Taking part in a group task.- Loving English.- Working the fine motor skills making doing

fancy dress costume.- Learning vocabulary.- Knowing the traditions of English culture.- Recognizing grammar.- Learning the name of the Halloween monsters.

Contents:

Attitudinal contents: - Interest in listening to their friends.- Participation in the group task.- Enjoy (learning) English.Procedurals contents:- Dress up with the fancy dress costume.- Construct and remember a short

sentence.Conceptual contents: - The traditions of the English culture- Make a grammar pattern- Knowledge of Halloween monsters

Methodology:

At the start of the lesson, the children will make fancy dress costume with the teacher’s help. They will bring the material resources from home. Then we will dress up in our new clothes and we will listen to the song. We can sing the song together, adding the other monsters (witches, zombies,…)Finally, the children will practise their sentence:

- Knock, Knock – Child.- Who are you? – Teacher.- I’m a ghost/witch/…. I’m a little ghost/witch/…. –

Child.We can record the children saying their sentences.

Time:

The lesson planning will last for 30 minutes.

Place:

The English lesson will be in the children’s classroom.

Human Resources:

The English teacher will do the activity with children.

Age of children:

These activities are destined for five years old children.

Material resources:

- Costumes. - A video with a Halloween lesson.
