author, poet, editor and literary critic,considered part of the American

RomanticMovement. Best known for his tales ofmystery and the macabre, Poe was oneof the earliest American practitioners of

the short story and is considered theinventor of the detective-fiction genre.

He was born as Edgar Poe in Boston,Massachusetts; he was orphaned youngwhen his mother died shortly after hisfather abandoned the family. Poe wastaken in by John and Frances Allan, of

Richmond, Virginia, but they neverformally adopted him. He attended theUniversity of Virginia for one semester

but left due to lack of money. Afterenlisting in the Army and later failing as

anofficer's cadet at West Point, Poe parted

ways with the Allans.

Poe switched his focus to prose and spent the next several

years working for literary journals and periodicals. Hiswork forced him to move between several cities,

includingBaltimore, Philadelphia, and New York City. In Baltimore

in1835, he married Virginia Clemm, his 13-year-old cousin.

InJanuary 1845 Poe published his poem "The Raven" to

instant success. His wife died of tuberculosis two yearsafter its publication. He began planning to produce his

ownjournal, though he died before it could be produced. OnOctober 7, 1849, at age 40, Poe died in Baltimore; thecause of his death is unknown and has been variouslyattributed to alcohol, brain congestion, cholera, drugs,

heartdisease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis, and other agents.
