    Experience

The Bee CourseSouthwestern Research Station, AZ August 25-September 4, 2013

Learn how to identify bees to genius using TB Mitchells key. Pin, label, and identify bees to

genus. Learn how to collect bees using methods that would preserve DNA.

Preliminary Work for ResearchRaleigh, NC Couple weeks of summer, 2013

Chose study sites with GIS and email approaches. Collected bees with bee bowls. Wash, dry, pin, label, and sort bees morphologically. GPS study site locations. Use GIS to map study

sites. Appropriately change and expand research once began to understand what this field work

    would be like.

Pinelands Native BeesSenior ProjectRichard Stockton College of New Jersey, NJ 2012 to 2013

Collect bees using bee bowls. Preserve bees in ethanol until they are ready to be pinned.

Wash, dry, pin, label, and identify bees to genus. Had bee identifications clarified by Dr.

John Ascher. Figure out the pattern of bees relating to season and habitat in the Pine Barrens.

Write a report, create a presentation to be presented to Stockton, Entomological Society of

America, and other areas. Share information with Pinelands Preserve Alliance, The National

Pollinator Survey, and other organizations.Yellowstone SCA (Student Conservation Association) InternshipYellowstone National Park, WY Summer 2011

Learned the basics of GIS to make general maps. Hiked to pollinator surveying areas to

place out bee bowls to catch bees for the Nation Wide Pollinator Survey conducted by

Sam Droege. Mailed the bees to Sam Droege. Put pollinator surveying points on maps of

participating national parks. Surveyed graveyards in Yellowstone to make historical maps

of those areas. Helped others with their projects by collecting GPS points for areas such

as wetlands, utilities, and educational signs. Hiked to search for pikas.

Independent StudyRichard Stockton College of New Jersey, NJ 2010-2011

Worked on understanding the method of bee bowls and identifying bees to family, attempting genus. Learned methods of washing, drying, pinning, and labelling bees. Only

used a few sites in the Pinelands, but after Yellowstone Internship, understood our method of

bee bowls was not as accurate as it could have been.
