16th annual Business and Community Recognition Luncheon
The Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce hosted their 16th annual Business and Community
Recognition Luncheon on Thursday, October 24th at the Zeller Banquet Center in the Avanti’s
Dome. The Chamber’s Member Promotions Committee coordinated the luncheon, which was
sponsored by Savant Capital Management, Pekin Insurance, Herget Bank, South Side Bank, Pekin
Trophy House & Engraved Gifts, The Greenhouse Flower Shoppe, and Pekin Hospital.
Recognition was given to thirty-two area businesses and organizations in the following
categories: remodeling or expansion; “green” projects or programs; new ownership or
management; new business or building; additional employees; major training effort; new
technology investment or major equipment investment; other business improvements; and,
community involvement.
Additionally, two businesses were recognized for 100 years of operations.
The speaker at the luncheon was Debbie Simon, President and CEO of UnityPoint Health
Methodist. She shared her thoughts on leading through change, lacing her comments with humor
and motivational thoughts and quotes.
Chamber Board President Tom Hornstein closed the program by noting the great turnout of over
200 people representing 48 businesses and organizations. He thanked the business community for
their continued investment, even in an economy that is slow to recover. He also encouraged the
audience to get involved in the community.

Veterans Drive Ground Breaking The City of Pekin held a ground-breaking ceremony to celebrate
the beginning of construction for the southern section of Veteran's
Drive. The 2-year project is funded by the State of Illinois. When
completed, this section of
Veterans Drive will
become Route 9.

Bob Evans Ribbon Cutting
Representatives from the Pekin Area Chamber of Commerce and the
City of Pekin came together to congratulate Bob Evans on their grand
re-opening. The restaurant was closed five days for the makeover,
which included new carpet, booths, restrooms, and a fresh coat of
paint on the outside. Manager Ron Richter and assistant manager
Megan Snively were assisted at the ribbon cutting by Chamber
President Tom Hornstein and Pekin Mayor Laurie Barra.
John M. Evans Business After Hours The October Business After Hours was hosted by John M. Evans
Supportive Living Community. Chamber members and guests
were treated to delicious food and beverage choices, door prizes
and information about the facility. Afterwards everyone enjoyed
a beautiful rainbow.

Pekin Hospital is pleased to offer an adult diabetes
education workshop on November 11, 12, and 13. The
series of three classes will be held from 2 – 5 p.m. in the 4
South Education Classroom at Pekin Hospital.
Class fees are $70 per person (one guest may accompany
the registrant at no extra cost). The $70 includes all three
classes. Class size is limited. Registration deadline is

Biz Barometer
Pekin’s sales tax disbursements received from the state in October were 0.4% more than
October of 2012. October disbursements typically represent sales taxes collected by
merchants in July and paid to the state in August.
Pekin’s sales tax disbursements received from the state for the last 3 months were 1.9%
greater than the same three months a year ago.
Two of the other three large communities on the east side of the Illinois River received
more sales tax disbursements in October, compared to October of 2012: Morton (1.7%),
and Washington (4.3%). However, East Peoria received 5.6% less sales tax disbursement
in October, compared to October of 2012.
For the 12 months ending in October, Pekin (+10.0%), East Peoria (+4.1%), and
Washington (+2.5%) all received more sales tax disbursements than the 12 months ending
in October of 2012. Morton’s sales tax disbursements received from the state were down
(-0.8%) for the same period.
The number of residential units sold in Pekin in the first nine months of the year was
11.8% greater than the sales in the first five months of 2012.
The other large Tazewell County communities have all closed less residential unit sales in
the first nine months of the year, compared to the same period in 2012: East Peoria was
down –0.8%, Washington was down –5.7%, and Morton was down -9.5%.
The average sales price of a Pekin residential unit in the first nine months of the year was
$109,672, which is down 0.5% from the average price for the same period in 2012.
The year-to-date average sales price of residential units in the other large Tazewell
communities was mixed compared to 2012: East Peoria (+4.9%), Washington (+4.2%),
and Morton (-10.0%).
The unemployment rate in Pekin dropped to 9.8% in August, down from 10.6% in July,
but up from 9.3% in August of 2012.
The August unemployment rate in the Peoria region stood at 8.7%, down from the 9.4%
in July, but up from 8.0 in August of 2012 .
The number of people employed in Pekin in August was 15,575 — 668 lower than April
of 2012.
The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 0.1 percent in
August on a seasonally adjusted basis. Over the last 12 months, the all items index
increased 1.5 percent before seasonal adjustment.
Nationally, Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 148,000 in September, and the
unemployment rate was little changed at 7.2 percent.
