Background The existing Hamilton Street Bridge in West Leederville provides an important local road crossing over the Perth to Fremantle Railway line for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. Built in 1919 using timber, the bridge has for some years been limited to five-tonne load, and has almost reached the end of its anticipated 100-year service life. The proposed replacement bridge project has been initiated to address the existing bridge’s deterioration with a plan to replace the timber structure with a new prestressed concrete bridge. The road network currently services areas such as Subiaco Oval, former Kitchener Park (site of the new Inner City College), Mueller Park and Perth Modern School, as well as a mix of commercial and residential areas located on Railway Parade on the north side of the railway line. Traffic volumes from 2016 indicate 2,800 vehicles use the crossing each day, with a particular focus on traffic moving to and from Perth Modern School, and previously Princess Margaret Hospital and the Telethon Children’s Institute. The bridge also provides access to a pocket of commercial / residential properties bounded by Hadyn Bunton Drive, Subiaco Road, Loftus Street and the Perth to Fremantle Railway line. We will be replacing the ageing Hamilton Street Bridge over the railway line in Subiaco with a new steel and concrete structure. BackgroundThe existing Hamilton Street Bridge in West Leederville provides an important local road crossing over the Perth to Fremantle Railway line for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

Replacement bridge informationWhen complete, the proposed bridge, will be made up of two 3.5 metre traffic lanes, two 1.2 metre shoulder lanes and two three-metre paths on each side of the bridge. Some general geometrical improvements will also be made to enhance drainage and connections to the existing road network on either side of the bridge.

When the proposed bridge is completed the five-tonne load limit will be lifted, however, there is no predicted change to the use of Hamilton Street as a result of the project; it will remain a local access road.

Pedestrian and cyclist facilitiesAdditional pedestrian and cyclist facilities incorporated into the proposed bridge will enhance safety, increase capacity and as a result encourage additional pedestrian and cyclist patronage on the bridge. The new facilities include an additional path on the east side of the bridge, pedestrian crossing facilities at Railway Parade on the north side of the bridge and 1.2 metre shoulder widths providing on-road cycling options.

To minimise the road work area and land acquisition requirements a decision was made to retain the existing bridge alignment, including left-in and left-out access for the Hamilton Street and Railway Parade intersection.

For safety, as part of the project some tree removal is proposed to the north-side of the railway line (Railway Parade) to enhance intersection site distances and layout.

Strategic context – How the bridge fits within the wider areas development The bridge is located within the City of Subiaco and the State Government’s Subiaco East Project, located within the Railway Precinct referenced in the Subiaco Redevelopment Scheme 2. The bridge replacement project has given consideration to the above and the existing traffic and pedestrian and cyclist movements.

A Development Application for the replacement of Hamilton Street Bridge is currently being assessed by the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA). The contract to replace the bridge will be made following determination of the Development Application by the MRA.

Please note, although approval for these works has not yet been granted, this information is being supplied to provide prior notification given the upcoming holiday period.

During constructionThe bridge will need to be closed to all vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists in February 2019 for up to seven months for demolition works and installation of the new bridge. When the bridge is closed vehicle access to Subiaco Road residences, Mueller Park and Perth Modern School will be maintained via Hamilton Street south of Subiaco Road, Haydn Bunton Drive west of the bridge and Loftus Street east of the bridge.

Pedestrian and cyclist access will also be detoured along Subiaco Road to maintain access during construction.

During demolition and new bridge beam installation, full railway shut-downs will also be required. This will have some implications for railway services that will be advertised separately in 2019 by the Public Transport Authority.
