Welcome to the Township of Hamilton.
Incorporated on Feb. 5, 1813, we are now cele -brating our 200th birthday. At 116 square miles weare proud to be the states largest municipality. Thehistoric village of Mays Landing, located within thetownship, has also had the distinction of being thecounty seat of Atlantic County since 1837.
Our 27,000 residents and visitors enjoy ourunique mix of rural forests, natural resources, bus-tling suburbs and shopping areas and quaint MainStreet USAdowntown area.
Our origins are directly tied to the Great EggHarbor River and its tributaries. George May, afterwhom the village of Mays Landing was named, builta shipyard and trading post near Babcock Creek in1756. By the mid 19th century the shipbuilding in-dustry in Mays Landing reached its height.
From 1830 to 1880, more than 200 vessels werebuilt along the Great Egg Harbor River with lumberfrom native forests and iron from Weymouth found-ries. Half of them were produced at Mays Landing. But by the end of century, wood shipbuilding beganto disappear due to the lack of suitable timber. Ironwas then substituted for hull construction.
Today, we are the home of the Oakcrest Fal-
cons, Atlantic Cape Community College, AtlanticCounty Institute of Technology, Atlantic CountyJustice Facility, Atlantic County Library, HamiltonMall, Hamilton Commons, Consumer Square, In-
dustrial Park, roadside farm markets, and locallyowned restaurants and shops.
We are a diverse mix of old families continuingtraditions here and of new residents and familiesmaking new ones. There is something specialabout our town. Having been born and raised here,I m proud to serve the place I will always call home.
I hope you will visit, boat, walk, shop, eat, learn, support, cheer and live in the Township of Hamiltontoday and every day. Mayor Amy Gatto

Driving through Hamilton Township alongthe main access route of the Black HorsePike, one might think shopping centers
with big names and sprawling storefrontsdominate, but that is far from accurate. Thiscommunity of more than 26,000 manages toblend big, national chain stores with individ-ually owned shops and small businesses.
The Mays Landing Merchants Associationwith 100 members has a motto; Businessessupporting the community. And accordingto the president of the association, JohnKurtz, owner of County Seat Florist at 5926Main St. in Mays Landing, that motto hasallowed local merchants large and small tothrive in Hamilton because the communityin turn supports the businesses that support
them. When the community comes to thedifferent events that the businesses puton, like the Hometown Celebration, theFall Festival, the recent Wine Festival atLake Lenape and the upcoming Dickensof a Holiday, they know that it is the localbusinesses that make it happen. In turn the
people support the local businesses; onehand really washes the other. It really worksquite well, said Kurtz.
The Wine Festival at Lake Lenape wasthe most recent success. Kurtz said thatwhile it is somewhat different than other
events throughout the year and they soldtickets, it was a great event. We change things a bit each year. This
was the third year and we added a winegarden after getting approval from thestate. People could come in and sit downand open a bottle of wine they had justpurchased and enjoy it and cheeses thatwere complimentary; it really worked well. The weather was beautiful and sitting andenjoying a glass of wine looking over LakeLenape with the leaves changing was reallyvery nice.
Kurtz said the feedback he has heard
since the event has been very good.Businesses large and small are mem -bers of the Merchants Association. Kurtzsaid smaller merchants belong as well asrestaurants in the mall and even Walmart isa member of the group.
When members make a contributiontoward one of the events and their sign is
there, it lets people know who has sup-ported their community event, and we feelthat is what allows us to all be successful, because we do get that support from ourcommunity, Kurtz said.
The next big event on the calendar is the
Dickens of a Holiday scheduled for Satur -day, Dec. 7. Its a full day of events. The day will begin with a breakfast with
Santa starting at 8 at the Masonic Lodge. There will be three craft fairs going on;outdoors at the park and indoors at thePresbyterian Church and the library.
Santa will return to the park where kidswill have a chance to visit with him and takepictures. There is a snowball toss for thekids where they have to throw snowballsthrough a big snowman. Kurtz said all of thefunds raised go to support the local foodpantry. There will also be a train ride around
the court house.Kurtz said all of the members step up anddo sponsorships for the events and there isa sign to designate who the sponsor is. Its
just an awareness that works well for us.For more information about the Hamilton
Township local businesses see www.mays-landingmerchants.com .

The Atlantic County Institute of Technology, located in the Hamilton Township Business Park,is a school of choice for students throughout
Atlantic County. And an ever increasing numberof students are taking advantage of the oppor-tunities the school has to offer.
The former Atlantic County VocationalTechnical School, or Vo-Tech, first openedits doors in 1974, offering vocational pro-grams that led directly to careers in special-ized vocations. Students attended part-timeand spent the other part of their day at theirhome high school. In 2000, the school beganto offer full-time academy programs, the firstof which was the Academy of Culinary Artsand Hospitality Management.
The following year saw the opening of the Academy of Informat ion Technology, with aHealth Science and Medicine Academy rightbehind. The most recent academy to openwas Math, Engineering and Science. Andthere are more to come.
Next year, the school will offer an Aero-space and Science Academy as well as an
Air Force J unior ROTC program. A Perform-ing Arts Academy is also planned that will in-clude such components as technical theater,
drama, video production and vocal.Last year, the school also began compet-
ing in interscholastic sports. The Red Hawkscompete against other schools in basketball, soccer, cross country, baseball, softball, track, bowling and cheerleading. A number of orga-nizations are also available for participationby the students. In fact, more than 25 percentof the students stay after school each day toparticipate in sports or other extracurricularactivities.
Thanks to a building project supported bythe county government, the school has nearlydoubled in size and added a state-of-the-artperforming arts center, gymnasium and manynew classrooms and laboratories. In the lastdecade, student enrollment has nearly tripledto more than 1,100 full-time students.

The Latino Club of Egg Harbor City was formed three years agoto bring together the different Latino cultures with neighbors andthe rest of the community, to celebrate their differences and theirsameness.
It began in 2011 with the clubs first parade and street fair; thisyear the Latino Club of Egg Harbor City celebrated its third paradeand street fair. It was a huge success with great food, wonderfulLatin music, a big parade, and the community coming together anddancing in the street.
A strong core of members works together planning events in thecity. One of the biggest is Three Kings Day in early January. Theygive presents to children at city hall, then in the evening there isa fundraiser dinner with great food and music at the union hall onPhiladelphia Avenue.
There are also various fundraising dinners and Chinese auctions. One of the clubs biggest successes was raising more than $4,000for Little Eddie Rodriguez, who needed a new insulin pump. TheLatino Club also recently collected money for the American CancerFoundation.
The club meets Wednesday evenings at 6:30 at the Egg HarborCity municipal building. It welcomes new members who are willingto work together to bring the Latino culture and traditions to EggHarbor City residents, and have a good time doing it.
President is Dennis Munoz, president, (609) 839-3840; vicepresident is Hazel Mueller, (609) 703-4288. You can also find themon Facebook.

Township historySettlements within the area we know now as
Hamilton Township date from the early 1700s.These settlements were in places like Mayslanding, Weymouth, Postville, and Catawba.
The area was desirable because of theGreat Egg Harbor River, which was valuableas source to transport goods like those from
the furnace at Weymouth. Early industry alsoincluded shipbuilding and making charcoal.
The Township of Hamilton was created in
1813 in what was then Gloucester County. The bulk of townships area came from EggHarbor Township and a small portion fromWeymouth Township. When Atlantic Countywas created in 1837, Mays Landing becamethe county seat. At 115 square miles, Hamil-ton is the largest municipality by area in New
Jersey.The population was 877 in 1820; 1692 in1900; and 26,500 in 2013.
The Great Egg Harbor River was dammedin 1846 to create Lake Lenape. Railroadscame to the area in 1870 and 1880; phoneservice in 1902.
The opening of the Hamilton Mall in 1987was the beginning of the township as a region-al shopping area that now has over 3 millionsquare feet of retail space.
The township is home to elementary andmiddle schools, Oakcrest High School, the
Atlantic County Institute of Technology, theSpecial Services School District, and AtlanticCape Community College.
Town Hall at Route 50 and 13th St. wasdedicated in 1992. Amy Gatto s erves asmayor for 2013.
