From the President ZL3TAO

The past few weeks have been very busy for the clubrooms. We created nine new hams on Sunday 14th, afternoon. The Robotics Group had their first face to face meeting on Monday 15th and Tuesday nights have once again been very busy. CARDS had their meeting on Wednesday 17th. On Thursday 18th afternoon the Daytime group had their first face to face meeting for three months, and on Friday 19th morning the Museum Group started on the storeroom. Saturday 20th there was a SAR IMT training day at the Clubrooms. On Monday 22nd at 7.30pm there was a Contest & Awards meeting. Items discussed included the Memorial Contest, VHF Field Day and Jock White Field Day plus a couple of new activities. AREC had a WanderSearch lecture via Zoom on Wednesday 24th. On Thursday 25th there is a Hamcram+ session for the new Hams where we get them started on their first 50 contacts (some are well under way) and answer any questions they have. The Museum Group will be back into the storeroom on Friday morning. On Monday 29th June at 7pm is a VHF Activity Hour - no Easter Eggs on offer this time. You will probably find the new Hams on one of the repeaters. It is also an opportunity to try a new mode. Cheers, Ian

Secretary Rory’s Ramblings - ZL3HB

Well we are back into it again with meetings etc. Was an amazing time in lock down but seems we have all gone car crazy since, with vehicles everywhere and all back to normal it seems. June 13/14 weekend was another Hamcram with 9 successful candidates so that was great. Already 3 booked for next one on 26/27 September. So if you know of anyone interested pass them over to Mike ZL3MWD. Tuesday nights again in full swing with 45 the other night so you are making good use of your club. And estates sales & scrap & trading table all helping the bottom line which is good.

If you have any ideas for club projects please let committee know. There are more poles & aerials planned for more radio versatility. See you in July. Rory ZL3HB

The case of the missing……

Does anyone know the whereabouts of a silver/ali attache case that was under the spare spectrum analyzer in the loft ? Not sure how long this has gone missing. This is my personal unit. I brought it in a while ago and forgot to take it back home. Thanks, Mark ZL3JVX

Sorting out which SSTV to use and why. ZL3DEM

The SSTV Handbook a has an amazing amount of information most of the links in this document are taken from here: http://www.sstv-handbook.com/ “The most popular modes of SSTV are Robot, Scottie, and Martin.” This link is a good analysis of the above 3 modes and what they look like on a waterfall https://www.sigidwiki.com/wiki/Slow-Scan_Television_(SSTV) This link is a pdf of the majority of modes and their formats extract shown: https://www.sstv-handbook.com/download/sstv_05.pdf

A very detailed list of the protocols and how they are constructed http://www.sstv-handbook.com/download/sstv_04.pdf

There’s quite a bit of reading to be done – but I’m thinking it comes town to LPM (lines per min) There doesn’t appear to be a huge difference between Robot, Scottie, and Martin

The longer the transmission the more data – so for a poor link, slower.

Rick sent me this gantt chart, looks like he has a busy week.

Antenna training kit Anten’it

A new antenna training kit concept where students can design and measure their own antennas in time-limited antenna laboratory lectures. The antenna design kit is made of metal and dielectric bricks, ground planes and connectors. Students can start their design with basic analytical calculations, use the bricks to build the antenna, measure their antenna and iterate directly in front of a network analyzer. All cells are re-usable, therefore they can disconnect the bricks and use them to build another antenna. Our product family is called Anten’it. A website where you can see a 4.30 minute video, see detailed product documents and academic publications for this concept. www.antenit.com
