    what ta watchmike gagnon

    its always sunny in philadelphia

Mike herefilling in for B. Sobel on the regular What To Watch feature while B-

Rock is livin the life of comedy. Thanks for staying tuned.

I can think of no series that has come as a more pleasant surprise than Sunny. Origi-nally written off by many critics, including myself, as a low-budget snowballs-chance-in-hell-for-anything-past-one-season show, this sitcom has become a cult-hitgem.

I have to admit that thefirst time I saw this show, when it debuted, I didnt get it.It seemed to lack quality and effort and to be honest I didnt watch a full episode.Turns out its deadpan humour was just ahead of its time.

    Thank God for Netflix.

In recent history I discovered this series again via the joys of video on demand, andit was well worth giving it a second chance, especially in Season 2 when DannyDeVito joins the cast as Frank Reynolds.

Back on track, Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia is about a group of lowlife, degen-erate friends who own a bar together called Paddys Pub. Dennis, Mac, Charlie, Deeand Frank are some of the most selfish, self-centered and immoral people imagin-able. This collection of colourful people leads to a series of hilariously crude andpolitically incorrect situations, such as how to avoid being killed by the mob forlosing their cocaine, or what to do with a baby youfind in a dumpster.

The show started in 2005 and is still running strong with Season 9 set to debut inSeptember 2013. While most television shows spread their episodes out over an

entire season that stretches from September to May, Sunny enjoys a short shootingschedule and shows a new episode every week, meaning their season runs for threemonths, so if you want to catch new episodes, you have to catch them when theyfirst air.

Or catch them on a video service like Netflix.

The Beauty of this show is that the characters are written in a way that reminds us

of someone we know, or at least have run in to. The depravity is realistic, but overthe top enough that you can laugh at them, where you would be seriously concernedif you witnessed these antics in real life.

I know what youre saying, I have Netflix and I dont get this show. Thats becauseyou have Canadian Netflix. Get American Netflix, its got everything you couldimagine, and with a little extra research there are simple legal ways to get the fullAmerican listing for a few extra dollars per month. Or subscribe to the FX channel

with your cable or satellite provider.

I Think I Might Be White Trash:Honesty in Comedy

My name is Jordan Scherer (@JordanScherer on Twitter). I got intocomedy because when I was growing up, I was a legitimate fan of it.Every other career option just seemed either too boring or too dif-ficult. When I was growing up, if anything seemed to be going badlyI would always turn to my addiction; comedy. I loved every form ofcomedy. I loved sketch, movies, and stand-up but I really had an ado-ration for sitcoms.

For me sitcoms represented a perfect reality. I would turn them on andthey would transport me to another universe. In that universe I didnthave problems, only my favorite characters had problems and theywere always resolved by the end of each episode. It made life seembetter than it really is. It was a time to unwind and take in the art thatis comedy. Hell, the format of your average sitcom is so saturated they

even laugh for you. It was sort of like getting high.

When I first got on stage to do stand-up I thought you had to be acharacter. My entire comedy educationup until that point had all been focused incharacter analysis, which is still an impor-tant aspect of my comedy even today. Its

only the character that has really changed. When I first got on stage I took aspects ofwhat I knew to be funny in and used them.I basically threw elements of awkwardness, dorkiness, and infantilization into a potand made shitty comedy soup. I was telling

jokes about things I hadnt really experi-enced and didnt really care about. I wasnot honest and I was so self-centered that Ithought the audience wouldnt notice. Theydid.

When you are thrown into the world of comedy it is sort of like dis-covering Atlantis. If everyone in Atlantis had poor posture, cripplinginsecurity, and breathed out of their mouths. It was like being a newinmate in a prison cell-block. There are many unspoken rules and un-less you have someone take you under their wing, you are going to

have to learn the hard way. The only real difference between stand-upand prison is that inmates dont usually have an audience when theyget fucked in the ass.

What I have learned so far in my career is that you do not have to lookfor material. If you just simply exist the material will come organical-ly to your comedy prone mind. It is like the force, you either have itor you dont. I guess with that logic you could say the comic mindsetis kinda like herpes or irritable bowel syndrome too. The comedy isalready there. You dont need to go on a journey looking for it.

I feel that for me to be a good comedian I need to be analytical aboutnot only my surroundings but also myself. Since I have started be-

ing honest on stage, Ive learned more about myself than I could haveever imagined. Recently I came to the eye-opening conclusion thatI am white trash. I never asked to be white trash and I dont particu-larly enjoy it either. The objective reality can be both an enlighteningand terrifying road. But hey, when your dad refers to a snow bloweras furniture more than oncein your childhood, your uncle

is addicted to oxycontin andlives in the woods, and youwent on vacation once a yearto African Lions Safariyou start to realize you arentexactly bourgeoisie. That stuffis the funniest though becausebelieve it or not people canrelate to it, even if they haveopposing experiences. We all just want to laugh.

This cold night will turn us all to fools and madmen Bill Shakespeare
