HAMODIA C53 Community 18 ELUL 5772 SEPTEMBER 5, 2012 Mayor Michael Bloomberg was graciously hosted for break- fast at the home of Wallenberg Commission Board Member William Nussen. The breakfast was attended by numerous members of the Raoul Wallenberg Centennial Celebration Commission, including: Steven Grauer; Yitzchok Fleischer; Ryan Karben; corporate sponsors, Jonathan Zalisky, Kathryn Soman from HealthPlus Amerigroup and Gil Cygler from AllCar Rent a Car; leaders of organizations serving Holocaust survivors and their children; Rabbi Yeruchim Silber of the Boro Park JCC; Rabbi Shlomo Mayer of Chai Lifeline, and New York City Councilman David Greenfield. The Mayor, who was formally welcomed by William Nussen and Wallenberg Commission Chairman Peter Rebenwurzel, underscored the importance of highlighting Wallenberg’s extraordinary heroism, a point brought out movingly by Mrs. Ruth Lichtenstein, Director of Project Witness, a Holocaust education resource center that she founded and directs. Project Witness is also a major organi- zational partner of the Wallenberg Commission. What is so unique about Project Witness is that it focus- es on the spiritual heroism of Holocaust victims and sur- vivors, so that the courage of the past becomes a guiding light for the future. This message is par- ticularly apt for the commemo- ration of Raoul Wallenberg, as he embodied strength and courage in the face of darkness and evil. Ruth Lichteinstein presented Mayor Bloomberg with a canvas on which a poem and picture that appear in Witness to History is found. Ezra Friedlander, CEO of the Friedlander Group, which spearheaded the recent passage of legislation to award a Congressional Gold Medal to Raoul Wallenberg, praised Baruch Tennenbaum of the International Raoul Wallenberg Foundation for encouraging him to create the Wallenberg Commission. Speaking warmly and prais- ing the importance of remem- bering Wallenberg, Mayor Bloomberg engaged in a discus- sion on individual Holocaust stories of those assembled, allowing for an increased aware- ness of educating the next gen- eration not only about the hero- ism of Raoul Wallenberg but also about those martyrs who have almost been forgotten. It is anticipated that in the very near future, Thirteenth Avenue will be officially co-named Wallenberg Way, a major goal of the Raoul Wallenberg Centennial Celebration Commission. Thirteenth Avenue is the major thorough- fare of Boro Park, home of the most Holocaust survivors and their children.
