Hampshire Music Education Hub HUB Newsletter 14 Spring 2018 In October half term Hampshire County Youth Wind Ensemble (HCYWE) travelled to London for a day with the Band of the Scots Guards. After being given ‘ringside’ seats to watch them change the guard at Buckingham Palace, HCYWE rehearsed Johan De Meij’s 1st Symphony for Wind Band together with the Scots Guards, putting the piece together from scratch in just a few hours. The day culminated in a well-attended public performance in the Guards’ Chapel in Birdcage Walk. It was a real opportunity for our young musicians to work with one of the UK’s few professional wind bands and they came away inspired. The Band Master of the Scots Guards wrote afterwards to say how impressed they had all been by the quality and professionalism of our young musicians. www.hants.gov.uk Please see our website for news and forthcoming events: www.hantsmusichub.org.uk Working for the benefit of all our partner organisations. Schools Award Scheme closes Chairman’s Year of Music in style Keith Chapman MBE, who was Chairman of Hampshire County Council in 2016-17, pledged that his year as Chairman would be a ‘Year of Music’ for children and young people. “This great performance has demonstrated how much young people in Hampshire value and enjoy their musical education. I am very pleased to have been able to support that while I was Chairman last year, and hope that we have inspired many of our schools to continue with their extended musical programmes. Well done to all the performers – it is fantastic to see such a range of ages and abilities engaging with music and getting so much enjoyment and fulfilment from it.” The ‘Year of Music’ was available to schools across Hampshire, and the majority joined in with activities. The programme provided extra musical events; encouraged schools to increase their musical activities, by providing a schools’ award scheme and gave young musicians a voice in the decisions that affect musical learning in Hampshire, with the launch of a ‘Youth Forum’. The Schools’ Award Scheme enabled schools to log their musical activities and receive certificates for milestones, school

concerts, and for recognising pupils’ individual achievements.

Castle Hill Infant School in Basingstoke won the award for the highest number of school concerts in Key Stage 1. Alison Story-Scrivens, Headteacher of Castle Hill Infant School, said: “We believe that music is a powerful, unique form of communication. It can change the way pupils feel about themselves, giving them confidence and building their self-esteem.” Marion Taylor, Music Leader at the school, said, “Giving children the opportunity to perform, inspires a love of music. Using the platform of the Chairman's Year of Music has raised the school community's enthusiasm to celebrate and 'sing out'. Indeed, the school has never had so many pupils wanting to sing in the school choir.”

The final Celebration Event, at Hub Partner Thornden Hall, was attended by Keith Chapman MBE and the current Chairman of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Graham Burgess. It included presentations to the top achievers and musical performances from eight schools across the county, of varied age groups, styles and disciplines (listed below). The event was hosted by Youth Forum members, who are also members of the Gosport and Fareham Youth Orchestra and the Portchester, Fareham and Gosport Youth Band. The finale was a massed choir performance of Crescent Moon by The Crescent Primary School. This school applied successfully for Chairman’s Year of Music funding, to purchase a PA system. With this they created Crescent

Moon, their new school song (available on Spotify). All schools and the audience joined in the grand finale.

New Centre for Jazz in Hampshire With tasters before the summer, the Hampshire Jazz Centre started in October with over twenty members on an array of traditional jazz instruments. Several rehearsals are planned each term at Brookfield Community School, followed by a concert. Their spring concert is a performance as part of the Hampshire at The Hall event, so members are extremely excited. The centre seeks to provide musically enriching opportunities for young musicians in the field of jazz, including improvisation sessions, practical workshops on functional harmony, as well as performances. New members are very welcome, so please look at the Hantsweb Shop online to book for the next rehearsal. The members enjoyed their first end of term concert in early December (pictured).

Special Recognition Story rewarded St Alban’s CE Primary School, Havant, reported in their Schools’ Award Scheme, on a year 5 pupil who did a mature performance to the whole school of the Last Post and Reveille. It was deemed an Extra-Special Recognition Story under the Schools’ Award Scheme, and it needed an extra-special reward. It was arranged for the pupil to play at Hampshire County Council’s Act of Remembrance, led by the Chairman, Councillor Graham Burgess. A two-minute silence was observed, honouring current and past service men and women. The pupil was praised for his confident performance.

First whole-class mini tubas ever! Durley CE Primary School took on the challenge to welcome a whole-class set of bass brass instruments - mini tubas. In the Listen2Me programme a spread of brass instruments are provided; this is the first time all lower brass instruments have been used. Hampshire County Council visited to film their progress for their #ServingHampshire campaign and they sounded great considering it was only their third lesson!

Hampshire Music Youth Forum gathering momentum for 2018 HMYF have been busy over 2017 adding to the Hampshire Music Service YouTube

Now they have started an Instagram account @hmyouthforum and are looking to launch their own website early in 2018 to help fellow young musicians - “Giving young musicians in Hampshire a voice…” They look forward to your support as they plan their first event in the spring term.

Special schools festive celebrations Pupils from 15 special schools and schools with special units descended on hub partner Winchester Cathedral in December for the annual Special Celebration. The event re-tells the nativity story with a modern twist combining traditional Christmas carols with contemporary songs, broken up by readings by the schoolchildren. The heart-warming event started with a procession of banners representing all schools who attended, with pupils dressed as angels, innkeepers, shepherds and kings. Music was provided by the Baycroft Brass Band

and Hub Scholar multi-instrumentalist Connor Bates on keyboard. The morning was made extra-special when Mr Jolly the donkey, from Kiln Farm Riding School, was led up the aisle by his handler.
