As a result of all your hard work, we grew Hampshire Scouting again last year by 3.0% - more than twice our growth last year.

Thank you !

We passed the 20,000 milestone, and recorded our highest figures this century – 20,426 – an increase of 604 members.

We grew in all youth sections – especially Explorers and Network – and we gained nearly as many girls as boys.

We grew in nearly all Districts, and we grew our adult leaders faster than our youth members, which prepares us well for the future.

All in all, it was a great year for Hampshire Scouting.

So, why do the numbers really matter – and what next ?

Young people join Scouting for the adventure, and they stay if they get it.

Adult leaders join Scouting for the opportunity to make a difference to the lives of young people and be part of a community.

And Scouting thrives where it delivers value to its customers – young people, parents, adult leaders, and the wider community.

I was privileged to witness the opening of a new Scout Group a few weeks ago, in Rookswood near Basingstoke. It’s in a new development on the site of an old hospital, and the new Beaver Colony and Cub Pack are meeting in the brand new Community Centre.

The Scout District have worked hard with the local residents to attract young people and recruit new adult leaders. And there, in front of parents and community leaders, the new Beavers, Cubs and Leaders were invested and joined the family of Scouting.

In a sense, our numbers don’t matter. What matters is that more young people are able to experience the adventure, fun and friendship of Scouting. That more adults are able to enjoy a social life with a purpose as leaders in Scouting. And that Scouting is seen to really benefit the wider community.

If we do all this, then Scouting in Hampshire will continue to grow.

Olympic Village - Opening Ceremony - Track and Field events - Team SportsSite opens at 08:30

As part of the build up and celebrations towards the Olympics, the 1st Milton / 3rd New Forest South Cub Pack have been working their way through the Olympic support pack, ‘our sporting adventure’. We are lucky here in the New Forest to be able to support athletes who are taking part in the games. Aaron Phipps, lives in Totton and is on the England wheelchair rugby team and hopes to be picked for the paralympic squad

this summer. Aaron came to our group, talked to the 1st Milton, and Neighbouring Milford and Keyhaven Cubs about his exciting sport and what it means to be an athlete. The Cubs thoroughly enjoyed the event, joining in with the question and answer session and getting their photos taken. The Cubs stated the event was inspirational and promised they would be tracking Aarons progress towards the paralympic games stating that wheelchair rugby is epic, fantastic and awesome.

weLCoMe To The New Acc Cub Scouts

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Thelma Young as ACC Cub Scouts, effective immediately. She will be supported by Claire Webb , Vanessa Slawson and Frank O’Callaghan as County Cub Scout Leaders.

Many of you will already know Thelma. In addition to being DC of Southampton West, she oversaw the amalgamation of the Southampton Districts into Southampton City and served as DC for a total of 8 years. Her background is with the Cub Scout Section and she has had roles as CSL in Hampshire.

I am very excited by this appointment and I am confident that the Cub Scout Section in Hampshire will be guided by safe hands and you will all welcome her into this role.

On Wednesday 21st March in the presence of The Deputy Mayor Martin Bierman, County Commissioner Adam Jollans and District President Lady Louisa Portal. and representatives from the Local and Parish Councils, Basingstoke West launch its latest group.

Rooksdown Scout group has grown from a need, and the opening of a new Community Centre in the Rooksdown Area of Basingstoke. The group has opened with the investiture or 3 New Leaders and 11 Beavers and 9 Cubs. Under the guidance of Ron Barker who has taken on the role of Acting Group Manager we expect this group to grow rapidly as word spreads and we hope to recruit more Leaders in the near future.

The launch was held at Rooksdown Community Centre in front of proud parents and all ended the evening with a drink and piece of cake. We wish this group every success for the future and hope that all the new Leaders are encouraged to provide a varied programme which will encourage all the young people to expand and take advantage of the vast range of opportunities offered to them.

Scout and Guide Fanfare launches Musical Alphabet‘F’ for fanfare, played by the 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band, launched the 26 hour Southampton Musical Alphabet on Saturday at the City’s Guildhall Square. The Scout and Guide Band could have claimed ‘M’ for Marching, ‘C’ for Concert or ‘B’ for band, but as their performance started the whole weekend celebrations, it had to be ‘A’ for Awesome! With the world premiere of this fanfare entitled “Olympic Flourish” composed by Director of Music Greg Walker, this talented band of Scouting and Guiding musicians followed the fanfare with an outdoor concert and then thirty minutes of live music on the march. With a busy few weeks ahead of them, “The Spitfires” will be entertaining H.M. The Queen and Prince Philip at Windsor Castle on April 29th for the national St Georges Day parade of Queen Scouts from all over the United Kingdom. The 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Bands weekend performance heralded the start of this City

celebration, part of ‘Music Nation’ – a national countdown to the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. For more information on the band, please see their

iNveSTeD oN A Ferry!iNveSTeD oN A Ferry!

Celebrations were held at the 3rd Itchen North Scout Group in Brook Road, Bitterne, on 26th January. Five members of the Group have recently completed their silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and were presented with their certifications in a ceremony attended by family and friends.

The five recipients were Dan Marnoch, Jordan Lane, Alex Taylor, Rowan Trodd and Charlie Rigelsford. All five were Scouts at the 3rd Bitterne Group before moving on to the Shackleton Explorer Scouts; they have since become leaders within the Group.

The certificates were presented by Mr Paul Upton, a Cub Leader at the Group, who had guided the lads through the four stages of the scheme: physical, skills, volunteering and expeditions. He spoke of the high level of commitment that the recipients had shown, and expressed thanks to their parents for their support. Adrian Mori, DofE Advisor for Itchen Scouts, spoke about the award scheme, highlighting the fact that many employers view the award as an additional qualification, as it demonstrates initiative, responsibility and teamwork.

The lads gave an audio-visual presentation about their expedition, including a video diary, which was followed by a buffet and celebration cake.

The Youth Council is proud to be an innovative project, pioneering and leading the way for Youth Involvement both locally in Hampshire as well as nationally as the first of its kind within The Scout Association.. Members of the Youth Council are excited to be recognised nationally by the BYC for their contribution to supporting the development of the Youth Involvement culture. This award not only recognises the young people in the council, but also all the adult volunteers who support the project and have shown commitment to empowering young people through intergenerational dialogue and working alongside young people towards achieving the Vision for 2018, where scouting aims to be shaped by young people in partnership with adults. Hampshire Scouting is very proud of the Youth Council and all it has achieved and continues to do so, and we would like to take this opportunity to thank all the adult volunteers who make this project possible through their commitment and support to promote youth involvement.”

At the recent Youth Conference, James Snape from Romsey was elected by the Youth Council to be the Youth Representative on behalf of Hampshire Scouting to The Scout Association. James will represent young people at the national AGM in London as well as at the National Conference in November. Hampshire Scout Youth Council is delighted to welcome James to his new role, and would like to thank the other candidates who stood in the election - we were thrilled with the turnout and standard of candidates, and are very proud to once again be leading the way in Youth Involvement as the first county in the UK to elect a youth rep rather than select one.

Congratulations to John (JP) Papworth, an original Scout Network

member of Romsey Scout Network who takes on the role of District

Commissioner for Romsey on 1st April.

At the age of 22 JP became one of the first Explorer Scout Leaders

and also one of the very first Scout Network members. JP was the first

Scout Network member to wear the County Scout Network necker.

7 years of service, and the Network are now looking for a driven and

well as supporting the network chairs and committee, as well as

communicating key messages to members, and of course having

At the beginning of the month the bursars along with Tom travelled to Gilwell Park to take part in a training week in which we were able to interact with all of the gap year students from all of the national parks. As we have already been trained in most activities we were able to help the other instructors that were beginning their training. On the first day we got split into teams that we would work with all week, the teams were; Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers and Network. After the teams were selected we were told that we were going to be staying in patrol tents for the first night, we soon found out that most people didn’t know how to put up a patrol tent! So it quickly became a teaching activity.

The rest of the week included training in a variety of different scouting activities such as fire lighting, backwoods cooking, knife and axe work, campfire songs, high ropes activities and climbing towers. Along with the hard skills we were taught a lot of soft skills that we would need to be a competent instructor which included delivery skills, ice breakers, group control and communication skills.

Overall the week was a great success with highlights such as Ross and Levi making fire with a Bow Drill, Joe being a team leader and delivering sessions to the gap students, Matt managed

to develop a song to describe the Beavers to everyone at the training. Also Sam and Rosemary did a very good job of selling Ferny Crofts to the gap students and possible instructor swaps in the future.

Rosemary and Matt organised a 2 day paddling trip up and down the Itchen last week. This was in preparation for our final expedition to canoe across Scotland. The purpose of the training was for all of us the work as a team and paddle 25km up and down the Itchen each day. This would be the distance we would need to average in Scotland to achieve our target of doing it in 10 days.

The weather was brilliant during the 2 days with clear skies and calm water. This could be completely different in Scotland but we were not complaining. The trip was not dramatic for a change in that no one fell in or got wet unintentionally. However Joe and Matt had to rescue a seagull from a fishing line under the Itchen Bridge, however no matter what way we tried to help it, it kept biting us! Other than that the trip was successful and all of us now feel really confident about our trip to Scotland in April.

Are you keen to learn new skills, hardworking and passionate about the outdoors?

The Ferny Crofts Bursary is now open for applications to start in September 2012. The Bursary is designed to provide an opportunity to learn more about running an activity centre, gain nationally recognised outdoor qualifications and to get out on the crags, mountains and rivers of the UK.

Current Bursary Student Levi reckons that the bursary is “awesome”. He admitted “The scheme has made me grow up a lot and made me realise what I want to do with my life.”

During the Bursary, you’ll spend time working at Ferny Crofts, as well as being given personal development time.

Personal development means different things to different people, to Joe is meant a lot of outdoor activities training. “I’ve done a lot of climbing training, as well as recently going on a trip to North Wales to do our Mountain Leader (ML) training. We’re also planning on going to Scotland and paddle from coast to coast in open canoes.”

Accommodation and food are all included in the Bursary package, as well as some training and trip fees. A monthly grant is also paid to each student. The scheme begins in September and runs until July (11 Months), and puts you in a good position to be considered for a summer instructors’ contract at Ferny Crofts.

Applicants must be 18 or over at the start of September 2012.

It’s now been around for almost 2 years and new materials to help with your local publicity and promotions are being added all the time.

In the print centre, as well as an array of posters and flyers that can be used for recruitment or to advertise events, you can also create your own branded materials for the Big Adventure; Scout Community Week; and coming soon inserts for the Parent’s Guide to Scouting.

Some posters and flyers are now available to target more diverse communities, including recruitment flyers translated into Bengali and Hindi; flyers to support faith communities; and flyers explaining the benefits of Scouting for fostered children.

There is also a whole host of other personalised items including:Stationery - business cards, compliment slips, letterheads; invitations and tickets; thank you cards; signage for your HQ; pull up banners and feather flags; photobooks and fundraising calendars; stickers - for your car or self adhesive for events; document covers for AGMs or District directories; and folders for events or training.

While in the multimedia centre, you can download a number of video files, that could be used for recruiting adults at your localAGM.

There is so much available to help your Group, Unit or section and the average document takes about 3 minutes to create, leaving you with a no fuss, professional and branded item that looks great.

Never logged in before? All you have do is register to use scouts.org.uk, you will need name; date of birth; your membership number; email address (not compulsory) and then you select your own username and password. If you have any problems the scout information centre will be happy to talk you through it.

Once you are signed in, you will see the print centre icon appear in the ‘my tools’ section on the right hand side, select this and you will be taken through to the print centre. Once you’ve designed a document, you can either create a PDF preview which you can save and print yourself or you can follow the options to place an order for delivery.

Once again it was time to fight off the inactivity that follows a festive Christmas break . This year I was finding it difficult to come up with a reason not to participate. I was reasonably well if not actually fit. I had not succumbed to man-flu and could not claim hypothermia due to sub-zero temperatures.

I am sorry to say that the write-up this year might suffer from a surfeit of actual facts rather than the creative writing which usually appears in this record of achievement of Kens’ Merry Men. To make it a little more believable I have resisted writing this too soon after the event to allow for the creative juices to overcome fact and hopefully make for a better read.

The route selection this year had been for an expedition to the desolate savage Island to the south of Gosport. Plans were well in hand when John had a parchment from the new DQHM at Portsmouth who advised “that he was not prepared to agree to our crossing the Solent on 27th December unless we have an armoured motor vessel escort that we can call upon in an emergency.” No doubt to protect us from the pirates who terrorise the Solent. He advised that this is due to what he considers the unacceptable risk of pirate activity, the risk of hypothermia coupled with the time it would take to launch

a rescue attempt to get the group to safety. Especially seeing that it was the holiday period, that the armed forces were all on extended leave for cost cutting reasons over the holiday period and that HMS Victory has had its masts removed and someone turned it’s longboats and oars into visitor souvenirs many years ago.

After frantic consultation with the group , the alternative of a night time trip to avoid the pirates and the DQHM ( since he would be in bed) was discounted since we couldn’t find a good way to attach candles to the Kayaks. We eventually settled for an expedition through the swamps of Langstone to the Smugglers Haunt of Emsworth.

This still entailed pleading with the Harbour Master and the RSPB Warden in Langstone Harbour who has suggested their preferred return route through the islands. They also provided the following advice:“The main high tide wader roosts are on Baker’s Island and on the outer bunds of the Hayling Oysterbeds. If the participants plan to paddle between the islands, they must paddle approximately mid-way between the islands to avoid getting too close to the north and west sides of the minefields around Baker’s Island (as shown on attached map) and it is important that any birds anywhere are not disturbed.

Likewise participants need to avoid coming too close to the outer bunds at the Hayling Oysterbeds since the security teams are likely to open fire at the slightest provocation.” It was deemed unlikely that there would be ship movements in Langstone Harbour on 27 December. However the group was instructed to keep clear of the main navigation channel and Bedhampton Wharf. The only good news was that it was unlikely that the last remaining part of the D-Day Mulberry Harbour would be shipped out to France over the Christmas period.And you thought that these trips were spontaneous and organised at the drop of a woggle.

There was a good turn-out this year. The team, numbering 14 comprised John, Matt, Jon, Allan, Andy, Steve, Peter, Richard, Nathan 1, Nathan 2, Nick, Chris 1, Chris 2 and Trebor.

We gathered at Eastney point, hoping that the police reception was not for us. Fortunately for us they were investigating a break-in to a houseboat.John appointed Trebor to lead the flotilla and to make momentous decisions, leading from the front and generally corralling us all along. This worked well – for a few minutes and then we continued to do our own thing whilst Trebor floated about chatting here and there having completely forgotten what he was supposed to be doing. Well that’s the youth of today for you….

Having successfully avoided the minefields south of Hayling by heading up the centre of Langstone harbour we were aware that the RSPB had launched it’s stealth balloons to monitor and track our progress, trying to catch us annoying the waders. We managed to thwart them since the island had become flooded and the waders had flown off in disgust.

Try Caving on Saturday or Sunday the 26th or 27th May or 20th or 21st of October 2012 at Hampshire Scout Caving Club’s Caving Days. The activities are targeted at the novice caver who has little or no experience. If you have been before let us know and we can arrange slightly harder trips in the same area.

A Caving Day consists of about 3 hours caving in the morning and 3 hours of caving in the afternoon (normally at Burrington Coombe and Priddy or in the local area).

Based around Priddy in the Mendip Hills of Somerset the cost is £90 per group of 6 or part thereof (this does not include food or transport to Mendip).

Caving Days

1948Scouting and the 1948 olympicsAs the country prepares to accommodate and welcome the 2012 Olympic Games I am reminded of the 14th Olympiad in 1948.

This was fairly soon after the end of the war and it was feared that austerity would affect the organisation and operation of the events but the Scout Association came to the rescue and was described as “The oil within the Wheels of the Games Organisation”.

At the opening ceremony Scouts carried the name displays at the head of each country’s competitors as they paraded in Wembley Stadium. During this opening ceremony Scouts released 7000 messenger pigeons. These birds carried peace messages back to the competing countries. Each day, during the events that followed, 60 Scouts acted as messengers to ensure that news could be passed to press and broadcasting agencies.

I was a Scout Master and a Rover Scout with the 2nd Edgware Group and, with other Rover Scouts, was allocated stewarding duties for events at the Stadium. We directed spectators to their seats, advised them on the facilities available and generally looked after them. I was present in the Stadium when Bob Mathias of the United States won the Gold Medal for the Decathlon. He was only 17 and was the youngest to win any Olympic Gold Medal. He won again in 1952 and went on to become an actor and then a U.S. Congressman. He died in 2006.

Scouts marked the route of the Marathon with mile and kilometre markers and were present along the route to provide assistance. The route went from Wembley and passed through Edgware, near to my home, and then on to its northern point near Radlett. It then returned to Wembley via Aldenham, Watling Street and Edgware.

Two hundred Senior Sea Scouts ran the sailing programme at Torbay. They launched and moored competing vessels and manned rescue launches.

At the end of the Games the chairman of the Organising Committee, Lord Burghley, thanked the Scout Association for the effort and support which ensured the success and smooth running of the Games.

This month’s focus on Hampshire Districts falls to Eastleigh and

the two Fareham districts.

Eastleigh

Thanks to work put in by Ivan Sparkes, we have done quite well in listing

things about the groups. We know that the 4th, 7th and 14th all have

Group badges. The 4th wear their badge on the sleeve rather than the

scarf and the badges of all three groups are in the County collection. We

need to know the scarf colour for the 7th as this is not recorded.

Name tapes in the collection are 1st Eastleigh, 1st Fair Oak (8th Eastleigh),

12th Eastleigh (Bishopstoke), 13th Eastleigh (Sea Scouts), 14th Eastleigh

(Spitfires), 14th Venture Unit, Eastleigh Fellowship and Eastleigh District.

You will notice that we do not have one from the 4th or the 7th! Any others

we are missing?

Fareham East and West

Again, thanks to a lot of detective work on the part of Judith Edwards in

the Active Support unit in Fareham, we have quite a bit of information

but there are gaps.

Group badges for 3rd Portchester, 1st Locksheath, 2nd Locksheath, 1st

Stubbington and 2nd Stubbington are all listed but we do not have an

example of either Locksheath group. Just a photocopy! Can you help?

Also we have no knowledge of any scarf colours.

Name tapes in the collection are 1st Catisfield, 1st Locksheath, 1st Park Gate,

1st Sarisbury Green, 1st Stubbington, 2nd Stubbington, 1st Titchfield, 1st

We recently did a sponsored word-search for our community challenge badge. We decided that we would like to support the air ambulance so akeala made a word-search with all words to do with the air ambulance. By doing this we raised a whopping £157.20p !! In February we made a giant cheque to present to a visitor Roger Leppard who was coming to talk to us about what the air ambulance do.

When Roger visited us he set up a slide show to show us what he does ‘at the office’ . then we watched a short video and then he spoke to us and answered all our questions. Do you know that within 3 and a half minutes of a call the air ambulance is in the air. They are based at Thruxton. Just to check we were all listening he asked an important question about what heli med meant, well joseph got it first and he won a pat the paramedic.
