Our studies: All ages groups are enjoying the time spent on Sundays learning about what it means to Believe in Christ. On Wednesday’s our Cubs will Wising Up with

Willie the Worm. Down the hall in the Jungle, we are Digging In to God’s word, one book at a time.

A note from Mrs. Shelby: We hope you enjoyed the program last month as much as we enjoyed serving the Lord and bringing His word to life. Our Jungle children (kindergarten through fifth grade) are learning what it means to serve Him, from helping at a nursing home to live productions and different ways in between, and I need the Berea Family’s help to continue their growing passion for serving. Do you have any chores

that need completing? Places that you frequent that could use come brightening up from a great group of kids?

Let me know and we will make it happen! Also, if you would like to participate as a chaperone we would love the help.

Upcoming: Winter Break is February 19-23. We will be working on service projects, have small group devotions, and enjoy fellowship with our group.

(more details to come).

H a m p t o n Highmilers will

meet on the third Thursday o f

February.  Mark your calendars for Feb. 15, the day

after Valentines' Day.   We will love the Lord, love the food that is served, and love to see each other.   Our program will be the movie "Lost Valentine".   Bring some Kleenex and bring a friend.

Tyson Chastain serves as the Director for Church Relations at Johnson University in Knoxville, Tennessee.  He and his wife, Betsy, recently celebrated their 26th year of marriage and have

three boys (Drew, Skyler, and Briscoe).  With an empty nest on the horizon, Tyson and Betsy have become involved in a variety of community organizations including The Humane Society of the Tennessee Valley and Alzheimer’s Tennessee.  Tyson serves as an elder at Gap Creek Christian Church in Knoxville, Tennessee, and enjoys a variety of activities including running, biking, hiking, and spending time among those needing to know the Lord.

On February 25, Berea will be celebrate Missions Sunday. Tyson Chastain

will be our guest speaker during the worship service. There will be one combined Sunday at 9:30 in the worship center, with several guest speakers. Some you might recognize as some of Berea’s own. Johnson University offers many degrees in many different areas. On February 25 we will be looking at many of them.

Pointed(Words,from(an(Old(Preacher(on(President’s(Month(( (

School kids in the West Virginia hills used to sing “Little month of February you are filled with big events. But we love you most because you gave us two great Presidents.” And because of the birthdates of those two Presidents we call this “President’s Month.” Surely our nation is impressed and grateful for how God used these two men. I’m especially grateful for the spiritual quality of their lives. George Washington during Revolutionary War and Lincoln, during the Civil War gave orders relieving troops, as far as possible, from fatigue on Sunday and giving them opportunity to attend worship. These two were not only two presidents who considered Sunday and church attendance. Hayes and Garfield habitually walked to church so their servants might rest and worship on the Lord’s Day. McKinley, when attending the opening of the State Centennial of Tennessee refused a trip up Lookout Mountain, saying, “I do not go sightseeing on Sunday”. Theodore Roosevelt and Calvin Coolidge spoke of respect for the Lord’s Day. Coolidge said, “I profoundly believe in the Lord’s Day.” It wasn’t just presidents who have honored the Lord’s Day. There have been athletes, inventors, and even football teams. When I say athletes, I mean Olympic Athletes. Who hasn’t seen the movie, “Chariots of Fire”? Eric Liddell had trained for and expected to represent Scotland in the 100 meter race. He withdrew from that Race because it was scheduled to be run on Sunday. He received great criticism in Britain for lack of “sportsmanship” and “patriotism.” It did become possible for him to later run in the 400 meter race. He had scarce training for the 400 but won in a record 49.7 seconds and became the Gold Medal winner. Inventors? Sure they were the inventors of the airplane. But while on a tour of Europe with their amazing revolutionary invention, the King of Spain sent for a command performance of their airplane on a Sunday. Wilbur Wright, true to his Christian training, sent back a polite reply refusing to fly on God’s holy day. The King of Spain honored their conviction and let them set the time for their flight. And football teams? Yes, that little team from the University of Suwanee who totally wiped out the big boys. They defeated the University of Texas in their first game 12-0. The next day they travelled by horse and wagon (no luxury airplanes in 1899) and with little rest they thumped Texas A&M 32-0. On their consecutive game in three days they defeated Tulane 23-0. The next day Sunday, they took time off for rest and prayer (yes, it was an Episcopal School) but took the field the next day and beat undefeated LSU 34-0. On the last of their 5 games they beat Mississippi State 12-0. No one even scored against these 11 players who had no substitutes - those players who rested and prayed on the Lord’s Day. By now you are getting the point of the Ole’ Preacher’s pen. You are hearing what I just said to the Men of Issachar. I now say it to the Daughters of the King, the Ladies of Faith, and members of Berea. It isn’t just my opinion, it is my firm conviction. “If you belong to the Lord, on the Lord’s Day you belong at the Lord’s Table with the Lord’s people.” What in the world could you possibly think is more important ?

Is Berea in Store for a Breakout? No, I’m not talking about a bad complexion! The term ‘Breakout” is used in church growth circles to describe a church that suddenly comes alive, explodes on the scene or moves from struggling to thriving. It’s hard to predict when it might happen and even harder to pinpoint why it happens with any accuracy. I think the Holy spirit of God has much more to do with it than any of us understand, and far more than many are willing to recognize.

While I don’t think there is any magic formula that would guarantee a “breakout”, I do think there are some things that might position a church to breakout if God so chooses. Research demonstrates that there are some things that Breakout Churches have in common and those common denominators might be a good overactive standard to measure against to see if we have positioned ourselves for a potential breakout. So, here are four things Breakout Churches have in common. As you read through them, ask yourself: Are these things that describe us, or are they things we might want to focus on?

1. They increased their efforts to reach their communities by fourfold. The church leaders and members understood that the days of cultural christianity were coming to a close. In response, they intentionally increased their efforts, spending and time significantly to reach their mission fields. Reaching and ministering to their communities became a very high priority.

2. They focused their congregations to pray John 17:20-23 as an on-going prayer. While not all of them prayed Jesus’ prayer for unity specifically, they did all pray for church unity in one way or another. Infighting, self-serving behavior and tepid commitment is a death-blow to a churches gospel witness. Breakout churches prayed, sometimes for a year or more, for unity in the church.

3. They made a concerted effort to abandon the entitlement mentality. Too many congregations have become religious country clubs, where the members pay their due and get their expected perks. Breakout churches intentionally left this mentality behind.

4. They prayed for hearts that would be willing to accept new paradigms. A church that is unwilling to change will die. You don’t change the truths of God’s Word, but many of the ways we “do church” or “have always done church” will not be here tomorrow. Breakout Churches knew that sacrifice and change was critical to achieving the mission of the church.

See you on Sunday
