PEC banquet attendees enjoy their dinner prior to the awards presentation.

Hyer to Receive AIAA-ASC James H. Starnes, Jr. Award Congratulations to Prof. Michael W. Hyer, N. Waldo Harrison Professor Emeritus at Virginia Tech, for being selected to receive the AIAA-ASC James H. Starnes, Jr. Award for 2013. The Award is presented to recognize continued significant contribution to and demonstrated promotion of the field of structural mechanics over an extended period of time emphasizing practical solutions, to acknowledge high professionalism, and to acknowledge the strong mentoring of and influence on colleagues. The citation of the award for Prof. Hyer reads, “For a distinguished career advancing composite structures, serving and promoting the profession, and nurturing the next generation of researchers.” Prof. Hyer will receive the award at the 54th AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Material Conference and Co-located Events on April 10, 2013, at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel & Towers in Boston, MA. The award includes an engraved medal, a certificate of citation and plaque, as well as a $2,000 honorarium.

PEC Honors Morelli with Engineer of the Year Award The Peninsula Engineers Council (PEC) held its 43rd Annual Awards Banquet on the evening of February 23, 2013 at Newport News Shipbuilding to honor engineers who live and/or work on the Virginia Peninsula. More than 160 engineers and spouses were in attendance. The purpose of PEC is to promote engineering as an honorable and rewarding profession, and to recognize the highest accomplishment of its practitioners. In addition, PEC provides a forum for the discussion of issues and activities of common interest, as well as coordinates efforts in furthering engineering education and increasing youth interest in the engineering profession. PEC members consist of 17 active local chapters of engineering and technical societies (including AIAA HRS), and three government organizations (NASA LaRC, ACC, and Jefferson Lab). AIAA HRS member Dr. Eugene Morelli of NASA LaRC, Dynamic Systems and Control Branch, received the PEC 2013 Engineer of the Year Award at the banquet. The award selection is based on the nominee’s significant technical accomplishments, leadership, contribution to the profession, and community involvement. HRS member Dr. Hyun Jung Kim of National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) was also honored as the AIAA nominee for the PEC 2013 Doug Ensor Award for Young Engineer of the Year.

2013 PEC/NASA Career Day AIAA HRS members participated in the Career Day program and exhibit for over 500 high school students and educators on the mornings of February 21 and 22, 2013 — during National Engineers Week — at the Apprentice School in Newport News, VA. The purpose of Career Day is to encourage and inspire the students to choose a career in science and technology.

Volunteers from various member societies and organizations of the Peninsula Engineers Council (PEC) provided group interactive activity with high school students inside the Reid Center. Several HRS members talked to students about engineering careers and led various interactive engineering design activities. AIAA HRS, NASA Langley, Huntington Ingalls Newport News Shipbuilding, and 18 other member societies/organizations of the PEC jointly sponsored the event.

HRS member Dr. Christopher Rumsey (left) engages students about aerospace engineering at the AIAA exhibit booth.

Over 500 Students participated at the Career Day on February 21 & 22, 2013.

Students spread over numerous tables listening to volunteer instructors and engaging in hands-on activities.

Volunteers Needed for Cooper Elementary Hands-on Activities

During the month of March and April, AIAA HRS will be visiting Cooper Elementary School to do hands-on engineering activities with each of the grades. The activities will coincide with their STEM curriculum and we’re going to need LOTS of help in order to see the 400 students at the school. As a general description, each visit will be about 90 minutes and include an introduction to the type of engineering, followed by a hands-on activity and concluding with a discussion about being an engineer. We did a similar set of visits in the last couple of years and it was a lot of fun! What do we need? Assistants: We’ll need lots of help for our leaders! You will help out in the classroom and assist teams as they work on the activity. You can specify an activity or a day and I can let you know the other. Each grade has approximately 60-70 students. We will plan on having between 3 and 6 AIAA volunteers for each group as well as 6-15 parent volunteers (numbers depend on the activity), so you will not be alone!

What are the dates and times of the activities? The following are the dates and times of activities that still need assistants.

• Kindergarten – Thursday, April 11, 12:30 pm • 1st Grade – Friday, March 15, 1:30 pm • 4th Grade – Friday, April 12, 2:10 pm • 5th Grade – Friday, March 29, 11:00 am

If you’re interested in volunteering or just want more information, please feel free to email or call me! Thanks! Shann Rufer AIAA HRS Pre-College/Education Co-Chair Phone: (757) 864-1005, Email: [email protected]

Hampton Roads Section The Hampton Roads Section (HRS) of AIAA, which has a membership of nearly 1200, represents geographically southern Virginia and southern West Virginia. The membership is made up of employees and contractors of NASA Langley Research Center, aerospace industry professionals, retirees, as well as student chapters at Old Dominion University (ODU) in Norfolk, National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) in Hampton, and Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. The Hampton Roads Section actively participates in AIAA national initiatives and programs. Local programs are held throughout the year and cater to the needs of the entire membership including young professionals and retirees. The Section annually awards at least two $2,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors planning careers related to aerospace engineering. The Section has a very active program in pre-college education. Please also visit the Section website at https://info.aiaa.org/Regions/NE/Hampton_Roads/default.aspx for more information.

Membership Information

In an effort to reach all HRS members we are updating our e-mail mailing list once a month. To help us reach you with news and information on upcoming programs, please verify that your contact information is accurate in the AIAA database, especially your e-mail address. This can be done by accessing your account at the AIAA website, www.aiaa.org under the topic “My Information.” Something as simple as an e-mail “typo” could prevent you from receiving Section information. Student members should keep their record current, especially seniors, to take advantage of AIAA’s offer of one free year of Professional membership (2nd year 1/2 price). AIAA encourages students to transition into professional members and to become active in AIAA at the Section, Regional & National levels in order to take advantage of all the benefits AIAA has to offer. HRS is offering free program admission to new AIAA members joining at any of the HRS-sponsored events! For more information, please email your inquiries to [email protected].
