Ham Video in few words

• PI: ARISS community (AMATEUR RADIO on the International Space Station)

• HAM Radio, operating for several years, establishes a half duplex voice-only linkwith crewmembers on the ISS, for educational programs of NASA, ESA and JAXA.

• Ham Video is an enhancement of the Ham Radio program.

• Ham Video is a one-way S-band video / audio transmitter. It modulates avideo/audio signal from a camcorder, transmit a radio frequency (RF) signalthrough one of two L/S band patch antennas (ARISS 41 and ARISS 43) installed onthe nadir side of Columbus.

HAM Video transmitter Commissioning

Mechanical installation

System should remain deployed continuously(to minimise activity

crewtime)

HAM Video Commissioning

-HAM Video tested sequentially in all configurations (frequencies & bitrates)

-Both Columbus antennas tested

-Wide range antenna (MATERA, Italy - tbc) receiving ~ 8 min visibility

-3 passes planned (2 for sequential configurations tests, 1 functional verification)

- Crew will be in camera FOV as per script (basically filmed performing the equipment protocol)

-Video received by ARISS will be streamed to ESA USOC following commissioning operations

-No use of the Ham Radio

Objectives:- Verify Columbus antenna performances- Identify and validate best suitable HAM Video configuration

HAM Video transmitter envisaged operational scenario examples

HAM TV Operations Examples

-HAM TV contacts as per requested via ARISS (for their education programme or on behalf of an agency) FOV will be specified in event script (typically similar to PAO events)

-HAM TV activations for hours (as long as the camera batteries can last) with digital clock in camera FOV (for ground segment expansion and development)

-HAM TV contacts activated at crew convenience (as for unplanned HAM Radio calls)

Notes: -Ground station involved: initially 5 European stations, they will be expanded by ARISS to a worldwide set-ups.

-HAM Radio operated in parallel for direct communication between crew & ARISS

HAM Video receiverLink Budget Analysis

A radioamateur-grade Uplink Ground Station:

• Camera

• MPEG4/H.264 encoder, 300 kbps output rate

• DVB-S Modulator (FEC ½)

• 10 W HPA, close to the antenna

• Helix antenna (RHCP) with approx. G=14 dBi

• 1.26 GHz amateur band

• Az/El antenna rotator, with tracking software

Upgrading the modulator to DVB-S2

standard will allow some link margin

(+3 dB) and/or longer connection.

A single uplink station will

allow at least 6 minutes ofvideo, for a pass with 50°elevation.
