Data backup
– Copies payload of data volume containing customer data and undo information
– Data backup is based on system wide savepoint
– Triggered/scheduled from outside
Log backup
– Copies payload of log segment containing redo information
– Automatic process (log segment full, time threshold exceeded, restart)
SAP HANA automatically handles the synchronization of backups for all services and nodes,
also in scale-out implementations no special user interaction required

SAP HANA Backup/Recovery 3rd party backup tool support: Backint for SAP HANA (I)
SAP HANA provides a backup/recovery API for connecting 3rd party backup tools
“Backint for SAP HANA” is an API that can be implemented by a 3rd party backup agent
For both data and log backups
Provides functions for backup, recovery, query, and delete
3rd party backup agent runs on HANA server, communicates with 3rd party backup server
Backups are transferred via pipe
Full integration with SAP HANA studio (configuration and execution of backups to Backint)

Certification Process
Backup tools that use Backint for SAP HANA can only be installed on the SAP
HANA server if they have been certified by SAP.

Default configuration for a third-party
backup tool is defined when the tool is
installed, no further configuration necessary
Data backup: choose backup destination
before executing the backup
– Destination cannot be changed (pipe location)
– Pipes occupy only negligible amount of space in
the file system

You can now copy a scale-out SAP HANA database (n nodes) to a single-node SAP
HANA database. Note: With SPS 5, the restriction was removed that only copies
between systems with an identical number of nodes could be performed.

SAP HANA Backup/Recovery Database copy from multi-node to single-node system (II)
Steps to perform
1. Create a data backup of the source database
2. In the target database, configure (n-1) additional index servers (.ini file parameter)
3. Restart the target database
4. Recover the data backup of the source database into the target database
All steps above can be performed using SAP HANA studio
Current limitations
Copies from n nodes -> m nodes (on roadmap)
