What I Need to Know

This module discuss the different hands, arms and feet movements in

folk dance. Through this module, you would be able to understand the importance of

the different movements of the body in dancing. With this module it will aid you of a

better appreciation of dance not only for educational but also for social purposes.

Read and understand the lessons in this module. Carefully answer and follow

strictly all the instructions in the different activities. The lessons will prepare you to

create your own choreograph dance using the different hands, arms and feet

movements in folk dance.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

• Identify the different hands, arms, and feet movements in folk dance;

• Value the importance of the different movements of the hands, arms, and feet in

performing our own folk dances;

• Demonstrate properly and gracefully the different hand, arm and feet movements in

folk dance through a simple choreographed dance.

What’s In

In our previous lesson, we were able to discuss what Folk Dance. Folk dances

are traditional dances of our country, which were evolved naturally and spontaneously,

on connection with everyday activities and experiences of the people who developed

them. We also discuss the Fundamental Dance Position of the Arms and Feet.

For this module, we shall further discuss the importance of the different

movements of the hands, arms, feet and movements with the partner in Folk Dancing.

In this module, you will choreograph a Folk Dance using these movements combined.

What is it

MOVEMENTS OF THE HANDS, ARMS AND FEET IN FOLK DANCE

A. Movements of the hands

1. KUMINTANG – moving from the hand from the wrist either in a clockwise or

counterclockwise direction. This is an Ilocano term.

2. KEWET – with fist closed and thumb sticking out turn hand outward or inward.

3. PALPATIK – with fist closed and thumb sticking out lower and raise the wrist.

4. MASIWAK – to turn the hand from the wrist halfway clockwise then raise the

lower wrist once or twice. This is an Ibanag term.

5. BILAO - to turn the palms of the hands up and down alternately, hands at waist

level in front, elbows close to waist.

B. Movements of the Arms

1. ARMS IN LATERAL POSITION – both arms at one side, either sideward right

or left.

This could be done in 3 level namely:

• Shoulder

• Chest

• Waist

2. SALOK – to swing the arm downward-upward passing in front of the body as is

scooping, the trunk is bent forward following the movement of the arm doing the

“salok”. This is a Tagalog term.

3. SAROK (or “SAROC”) – cross the R (L) foot in front of the L (R), bend the body

slightly forward and cross the hands (forearms) down in front with the R (L)

hand forearm over the L (R). This is a Visayan term.

4. TUMBA-TUMBA – with arms in 4th position, fist closed move elbows up and

down.

5. HAYON-HAYON – to place one forearm in front and the other at the back of the

waist. This is a Visayan term.

6. ARMS IN REVERSE “T” – arms are side horizontally, elbows bent at right

angles, forearms parallel to head, palms forward as facing inward.

7. PATAY – to bend the head downward and to support the forehead with the R

(L) forearm or with the crook of the R (L) elbow while the L (R) hand supports

lightly the palm of the R (L) hand. This is usually done with the L (R) foot

pointing in rear and knees slightly bent. This is an Ilocano term and the

movement is commonly found in Ilocano dances.

C. Movements of the Feet

1. POINT – touch the floor lightly with the toes of one foot, weight of the body on

the other foot.

2. BRUSH – weight on one foot, hit the floor with the ball or heel of the other foot

(free foot) after which that foot is lifted from the floor to any direction.

3. STAMP – to bring down the foot forcibly and noisily on the floor (like doing a

heavy step) with or without transfer of weight.

4. TAP – to rap slightly with the ball or toe of the free foot, flexing the ankle joint

keeping weight of the body on the other foot. There is no change or transfer

of weight.

5. HOP – a spring from one foot landing on the same foot in place or in any

direction (in front, in rear, sideward or across).

6. CUT – to displace quickly one foot with the other, thus completely taking off

the weight of the body from the displaced foot.

7. LEAP - a spring from one foot and landing on the other foot in any direction

(forward, sideward, backward and oblique).

D. Movements done with Partner

1. INSIDE FOOT - the foot nearest one’s partner, when partners stand side by

side.

OUTSIDE FOOT – the foot away from one’s partner, when partners stand side

by side.

2. BALLROOM POSITIONS

a. CLOSE- partners facing each other

b. OPEN- partners facing on direction

3. DIRECTIONS

a. CLOCKWISE – like the motion of the clock. Right shoulder is toward the

center of an imaginary circle. When facing center, the movement is towards

the right.

b. COUNTERCLOCKWISE – the reverse direction of clockwise. Left shoulder

is towards the center of an imaginary circle.

4. STAR WITH RIGHT HAND – four or more people join R hands at center and

circle around clockwise using walking or any kind of dance step.

STAR WITH LEFT HAND – same as “Star with Right Hand” but joining L

hands and turning counterclockwise.

5. JALEO – partners turn around clockwise (with R elbows almost touching) or

counterclockwise (with L elbows almost touching) using walking or any kind of

dance step. The hands near each other are on waists. This is a Tagalog but

of Spanish origin.

6. SALUDO – partners bow to each other, to the audience, opposite dancers, or

to the neighbors with feet together. This term is of Spanish origin and is used

in almost all of the Philippine dances.

7. ABRASETE- girls at the right side of the boy, girls holds the right arm of the boy

using her left hand, free hands down at the side. This term is a Spanish origin

and is used in Rigodon and other dances.

8. CROSSED ARMS – partners are facing each other or standing side by side,

girl at the right side of the boy. They join their right hands together and their left

hands together, either right over left or left over right hands.

9. DO-SI-DO (“Dos-A-Dos”) – the vis-à-vis (opposites) both advance forward,

pass each other’s right (or left) side, step across to the right (or left), move

backward without turning around pass each other’s left (or right) side to proper

places. This is of foreign origin and is used in many Philippine dances.

10. CROSSOVER – two couples (vis-à-vis) are opposite each other. Each couples

proceeds in a straight line to opposite place. The girls pass by their left shoulder

between the boys. Boys bow to each other when they meet at the middle or

about one-third of the way, then proceed to the opposite place. Upon reaching

the opposite place, partners turn about; girls stands at partners’ right side.
