Euan honouredTALENTED young

handballer Euan

McMurtie has been

honoured for his

sporting achievements

at a top awards

ceremony in Scotland.

The youngster was

just one of many

sporting stars

honoured at a special

ceremony in East

Kilbride.

He was named as

Junior Under-12

Performer of the Year

for his achievements in

both handball and

athletics.

He was part of the

team that won the

league and cup double

and was top scorer in

the East Kilbride

Primary Schools

Handball League.

And in athletics he

won the under-13

discus title at the South

Lanarkshire Athletics

Open last year and won

gold at the Scottish Age

Group Championships.

Great Britain Men’s Under-21s are travelling to Holland this week to

compete in the World Championship qualifying tournament in Emmen.

The squad will play

three games in three

days as they bid for a

place in the finals of the

prestigious tournament

in Egypt in August.

After a successful

training camp last

month, the squad

returned to Essen in

Germany last week for

final preparations, which

saw them notch up

some particularly good

performances against

strong sides.

Seven goals from

Gawain Vincent proved a

highlight as they took on

Bundesliga side Essen in

their final match before

travelling to Holland.

Despite losing 16-26,

the game gave the team

valuable match time and

experience ahead of the

weekend where they will

face Hungary, Iceland and

hosts Holland.

Vincent’s seven goals

underpinned a strong

performance from the

young side, while Chris

Mohr – a first team Essen

player in his day job –

added three and Seb

Edgar two. Stephan

Bulmer had another good

performance in goal with a

42 per cent save ratio.

“It was a good

performance and we were

well pleased,” said coach

Bill Baillie. “A lot of the

players did well and made

their claims for a starting

spot in Holland. We’ve

got about nine players

that we know we will use,

but the rest of the squad

are also capable players.”

Earlier in the week, the

team had beaten Essen’s

Under-20 side 36-24, with

Vincent again being top

scorer, alongside Edgar

who also scored six.

In an earlier training

camp, GB Under-21s

could only draw with

Essen under-20s, so their

victory last week shows a

GB Aces help

save Asker

ASKER Handball Club –

which features several of

the Great Britain

women’s team – have

staved off the threat of

relegation after a

dramatic weekend of

matches in Norway. The team battled to

avoid automatic relegation

with a string of good

results as the normal

season drew to a close,

and they won the play-offs

in dramatic style last

weekend to ensure they

remain in the Second

Division next season.

Asker beat Baekkelaget

II 33-23 on Friday, but

then lost 25-29 to a strong

Ull/Kisa side on Saturday

before winning 29-27

against Holand. A final

victory over Lunner, 36-34,

saw them home.

There had been strong

performances from all the

Asker players, but Cerys

Walker was in superb form

in goal, while Kelsi

Fairbrother and Holly Lam-

Moores also played well.

Ruislip for the first 20

minutes of their clash,

but a switch to a 4-2

defence proved a

turning point.

Gaps started

appearing and line

players Solomon and

Nagy scored crucial

goals to give Ruislip a

three-goal lead at half

time.

Strong Defence

The second half saw

Ruislip’s strong

defence keep Thames

at bay and gradually

the holders started to

pull away as Thames’s

small squad started to

tire.

Great Dane played

Olympia without their

top scorer and

playmaker Ann

Kandler, but were

strengthened by the

return of last year’s

Marketing

firm on

the case

“This is an exciting new

relationship for British

Handball,” said Paul

Goodwin, Chief Executive

Officer at the BHA. “British

Handball needed a quality

marketing organisation to

develop its commercial

value and Oaks bring

professionalism and

expertise to our organisation

at a critical stage of the

sport’s development.”

Oaks’ Commercial

Director Jo Coyne added:

“Our challenge is to ensure

that our British athletes see

a return for the sacrifices

they’re currently making,

and we are tackling this with

enthusiasm and passion.”

INFLUENTIAL sports

marketing agency Oaks

Consultancy has been signed

up by British Handball to find

funding for the national sides.

Thailand to play in a

tournament and compete

with teams where we

could learn a great deal.

“The money that would

have paid for the flights

can then be used to buy

us more hours with our

coach and therefore have

a massive impact on our

progression as a team.”

Eagles and Danes set for

titanic title showdownRUISLIP Eagles and

Great Dane both remain

unbeaten and on track

for a dramatic winner-

takes-all showdown on

May 16 following

victories in the

Women’s English

League last weekend.

However, both sides

face the remainder of

the season with serious

injury concerns to key

players.

Danes influential

playmaker, Ann

Kandler, missed the

weekend match with the

injury she sustained last

time out and is having a

scan to assess the

damage, whilst Ruislip’s

captain, Dani Sposi is

out for at least four

weeks with a broken

ankle from the match

against Thames.

Newcomers Thames

were goal for goal with

joint player of the year

Iris Manu, whose

influence was obvious,

especially with her feeds

to the line players.

It was another game

of two halves, with

Olympia contesting well

in the first half,

particularly as they had a

newcomer to the game

in goal.

The second half

however was all about

the opening 15 minutes

with Danes completely

shutting out Olympia and

pulling away with fast

breaks, all converted

and the line players

exploiting the spaces.

The Danes continued

to dominate Olympia’s

attack and restricted

them to just four goals in

the second half. Danes

ran out 18-10 winners

and remain top of the

league, though Ruislip

have a game in hand.
