Ochtrup Handball Club, who finished as runners-up in the Liverpool Invitation
Youth Tournament.
DEVA Handball Club ran
out winners in the recent
Liverpool Invitation Youth
Tournament.
The Chester-based
club were unbeaten in
the five-team event at the
Greenbank Sports
Academy, which included
teams from Liverpool and
Haslingden handball
clubs as well as two
teams from Ochtrup in
Germany.
The Ochtrup A team
looked strong and had
beaten Deva the previous
day in an exhibition game
at Chester’s Northgate
Arena, but Deva gained
revenge with a 12-9 victory
24 hours later.
Deva’s other results
were a 10-8 victory over
Haslingden, an 11-2 win
over Ochtrup B and a 13-9
win over Liverpool.
Haslingden beat
Ochtrup B 16-9 and
overcame Liverpool 13-9,
but lost out narrowly 12-13
to Ochtrup A.
Liverpool lost by one
goal to Ochtrup A, 6-7, but
beat their B team 10-3.

Ciaran Williams in action for Great Britain during the
Partille Cup 2008.
SEVEN teams of young
British handball players
also travelled to Sweden
to compete in the Partille
Cup in Gothenburg last
week.
Scottish team Tryst sent
two sides, while
Beauchamp Middle School
from Bedford fielded three
teams and Newham
Borough from London
had two teams
competing.
With the Partille Cup
attracting dozens of the
best young handball
teams in the world the
British teams struggled,
but learnt much about
the game which will set
them in good stead for
the future.
Tryst under-15 girls
were the only side to
register a victory,
beating Icelandic outfit
Grotta 16-7, but the
other British teams all
played well and scored
plenty of goals.
GREAT Britain men
remained unbeaten
throughout their Partille
Cup campaign in
Sweden last week after
turning in some superb
performances in the
Under-21 competition.
The squad were the
only unbeaten side in
the under-21 section of
the Cup, and were
placed in the strongest
of three groups which
went on to produce both
finalists.
Special dispensation
was given to the GB
Young teams battle well in Sweden
side to field three over-age
players, with their results
all shown as 10-0 defeats
as a result. But the popular
tournament provided some
excellent competition.
“The Partille Cup is a
great tournament,” said
performance coach Bill
Baillie. “And when you get
up to under-18 and under-
21 level there are no
mugs. It’s a really high
standard of handball and it
wouldn’t surprise me if
some of the players will be
in their national sides at
2012.”
The GB men last took
part in the cup in 2006,
where they won just one
of their group games and
another in the knockout
stages.
But this year they were
unbeaten and showed
great improvement on
their performance of two
years ago. In 2006 they
were heavily beaten by
Swedish side IK Nord,
while they gained
revenge for that with a 13-
11 victory in their opening
game of the tournament.
Line player Allan
Stokes was in fine form
with 31 goals, and the
Braband player was
voted as the players’
player of the tournament.
Goalkeeper Jesper
Parker had some great
performances, especially
against both the eventual
finalists who the GB side
managed to beat.
There were also 18
goals from left back Chris
Mohr, while play maker
and squad captain Ciaran
Williams led by example
with a determined
performance.
