British Teams in European
Challenge Cup Action
GB READY FOR ACTION
FOUR NATIONS TOURNAMENT:
THE moment of truth is finally here! After months of preparation, the
Great Britain women’s handball team will finally get chance to show to a
home crowd just what they are capable of when the Four Nations
International Tournament is staged in Sheffield on Thursday, Friday and
Saturday.
22 goals - Tomasz Lasek.
THREE British handball
teams took part in the
European Challenge Cup
last weekend, and battled
well against professional
sides from across the
continent.
Great Dane,
Manchester and the
University of Manchester
played in Italy, Austria and
Croatia respectively, and
although not winning any
of their matches they flew
the flag well.
Playing in Group C,
British champions Great
Dane began with a game
against Greek side AC
Fillipos Verias and lost out 39-
17, but were only 13-8 down
at half time. In their second
game against MRK Gorazde
they were beaten 16-32, while
in their final game against
Italian side Gammadue
Secchia they lost 38-18.
Manchester were beaten
16-37 in their opening game
against Russian tean Sungul
Snezhinsk, beaten by hosts
HIT Innsbruck 15-41 in their
second game and overcome
25-45 by Turkish side Bursa
Nilufer BK on Sunday.
Manchester University lost
to HC Buducnost Podgorica
11-39 on Friday, and were
them beaten 17-34 and 16-38
by Croatian team HRK
Karlovac and Swedish outfit
LIF Lindesberg respectively.
The top scorer out of the
three British teams was
Tomasz Lasek who scored
22 goals in their three
games.
Great Britain Women's Handball Team.
Handball fans from
across Britain and
beyond are heading for
the English Institute of
Sport to watch GB take
on Latvia, Turkey Under-
21s and the Faroe
Islands.
Much has been made
of Team GB’s training
camp in Denmark,
where many of the
players live, train and
play together full-time
under some of the best
coaches around.
But the talking stops
now. It is up to the
players to show the
world just how much
they have improved.
National and regional
media will be coming to
the event with reporters,
photographers and film
crews eager to let the
world know about British
Handball’s World Class
Programme.
The other three
nations have been
specifically picked to
give Great Britain a real
test, without lining them
up against the world’s
top teams.
It is all part of a
carefully planned
programme covering the
next four years with the
aim of making the
squad competitive on
the Olympic stage by
2012.
Great Britain will
know something about
the Faroe Islands,
having played them in
the European Challenge
Trophy in Cyprus in
March where they beat
them 19-16 while
topping their group.
But Turkey Under-
21s and Latvia are a
relatively unknown
