EXITLEFT PERFORMANCE ACADEMY HANDBOOK 4

It’s our pleasure to warmly welcome you to our family at the ExitLeft Performance Academy if you are a new student and to continue your journey into 2018 if you are one of our familiar faces. We will take your child on a journey through the performing arts to become a creative young adult, make firm friends and develop confident communication skills that will flow through all areas of their life.

We have created this one-stop handbook to shed some light on how the Academy runs throughout the year as well as answer a lot of the common questions that regularly come up. We would love you to take the time to read this information carefully and keep your handbook in a safe place to refer to as you need.

Our helpful administration staff will be available weekday afternoons to answer any queries you may have.

What to expect

Classes are noisy and fun. So much so that your child won’t even know they are learning because we teach by stealth. By the end of the year we guarantee your child will have learned a raft of songs, acted their hearts out, and performed all around Hobart. We also use eisteddfods and the Australian Music Examination Board Exams as benchmarks for learning.

It feels like family

The best performers are those who make other actors look good. This mindset of working as a team promotes making friends and helps kids feel safe. As students get older the Academy becomes like a second home where they can drop in anytime and hang with their friends.

Creativity is encouraged

In the professional world, people are often given incredibly short deadlines and expected to perform on the spot. We take this same principle and teach our students the tools required to deliver confident performances with any material. As a result students can happily put together a confident, high-level performance in just a few days.

There are no auditions to join the Academy

It’s easy to make yourself look like a fantastic teacher if you only choose the best kids. We provide the core techniques and skills underpinning good singing and acting, and teach the tricks to create professional performances. Our students do incredibly well in exams and eisteddfods and you can see a consistent level of skill throughout the Academy.

Huge egos are banned

So many times in performing arts learning you will see arrogance and a belief that ‘I am the best’. We actively discourage this entitled thinking, instead focusing on students supporting and encouraging each other, and pushing each other to be better. Feedback from the national VCA auditions over the past few years has shown ‘ExitLeft kids’ stand out because they are highly skilled, yet down to earth, easy to work with, and willing to try anything.

Your child can become an amazing performer

It takes at least a thousand hours to become proficient in a skill and another ten thousand hours to become a professional. Many people will comment a student is ‘so talented’ when what actually makes an amazing performer is passion + learning. Our unique program with class based teaching and mix of performance opportunities means our students are fast-tracked along this path.

A weekly email newsletter

We do our best to ensure parents and students are kept up-to-date with what’s happening and with our upcoming performances through our weekly email newsletter. Please make sure that we have your up-to-date email address and it is regularly checked. We recommend split families have both families sign up so everyone is kept in the loop. Don’t forget to add our admin email address [email protected] to your contacts so we don’t end up in your spam/junk mail folder.

Parents Facebook Group | Senior Students class groups

When you join the Academy we will invite you to become a facebook friend with our principal Ian Williams. Facebook is a great tool to communicate with a large number of people at once and our staff use Ian’s facebook account as a key communication tool.

Once you have accepted you will be added to the ExitLeft Performance Academy Parents facebook group. We will post updates, information about rehearsals, performances and events and our weekly newsletters to the group.

If students are in our senior classes they will be friended by Ian and added to the ExitLeft Senior Tue/Wed/Thu Class groups. If a student is young and/or doesn’t have facebook yet we will add you but ask that you refrain from commenting unless necessary as the idea of these groups are to encourage the students to make friends and feel comfortable. Our staff monitor these groups to ensure appropriate behaviour.

If you are calling in sick or stuck in traffic, a text message is the best way to go. Our staff regularly check the studio mobile, so will often be able to answer simple questions in between lessons.

Urgent questions about performances or events - Text or facebook message us

For events and performances we will normally have the studio phone with us so that we can answer questions or contact parents in the case of emergency.

Ian’s facebook is a contact point for urgent questions about rehearsals, performances or events, however be aware that we may not respond out of hours unless a performance or event is on. We ask that if your question is not urgent you direct it to our admin via phone, text or email. If it is a general question you can also ask it in the facebook group, but please make sure you have checked that the information is not already in the newsletter.

EXITLEFT PERFORMANCE ACADEMY HANDBOOK 12

People often ask why ExitLeft students appear fearless when they perform. From an early age all our students are expected to learn together in a group whenever possible. It is easier for developing students to pick up musical technique when they are learning with and from each other. When combined with our individualised music lessons it becomes a winning combination that often achieves fast track results, preparing kids for real life music making.

performance classes

Kinder to Grade Two

Kinder to Grade Two is a great time to learn to sing and act. Students develop performance skills, learn to work together, build their confidence and make great friends!

• Rhythm skills develop while clapping back simple patterns

• Pitch matching matures when making a musical sound

• Kids improve their ability to learn songs, poems & stories

• Through listening games they learn how to take instruction, follow direction and work with others

• Imagination is stimulated through improvised scenarios

Grade Three to Six

The upper primary years are when kids develop life-long friendships within the ExitLeft community. The classes become the high point of the week where students can see their friends, have fun and do something they love.

• The basis of healthy technique is formed

• Students learn to perform safely without tension

• The skills to confidently talk and perform in front of anyone are developed

• Students discover the importance of teamwork

• Spontaneous performance encourages creativity in a caring and safe environment

Grade Seven to Ten

These classes make the transition from primary to high school easier, with existing friendships continuing and the provision of a safe place to learn while students deal with the changes high school brings.

• A space where teens feel comfortable, safe and accepted by other kids for who they are

• A place where they have permission to be silly – especially important for socially conscious teens

Progression

Page 13: HANDBOOK 2018 - ExitLeft · favourite songs Jingle Bells and Rudolf the Red nosed Reindeer. Details at Last week Monday 10 to All studios Festive fun for the last week of class! Saturday

13

• Towards Grade 9, students start to step into leadership and mentoring roles where they can shine

• As skills develop, students can head towards a professional performance level for their age

• They become great team players, equally comfortable performing in a group or as a soloist

• Students start performing pieces with understanding and feeling

• They prepare for college level music and drama courses

Grade eleven, twelve & Uni

Students coming into Grade 11, 12 and University, or taking their gap year, will have already been studying music and drama with the Academy. Studies in College become about honing skills and focusing on creating professional performances.

• Opportunities to be a part of our performance teams that provide entertainment for corporate and charity events

• Preparation for auditions to become the lead in college and community musicals

• A level of study that becomes a bridging course between College and University

• Monologue preparation for tertiary auditions

• Becoming role-models and mentors for younger students

• Students develop the ability to perform solos at a semi-professional level

• Most students who study until Grade 12 at ExitLeft go on to study at University or further education

solo lessons

Adding individual lessons is a great way to focus on development of skills and performance techniques. A new Macquarie University study1 has shown that individual music lessons give students an advantage in the classroom. The results showed that children exposed to at least a year and a half of private music lessons have an edge when it comes to detecting patterns in the world around us, with musical training making their brains better at statistical learning which is a key building block for learning language and reading.

We work with voice students to build a safe foundation for their voice as it changes with puberty and give them tips and tricks for performances from school musicals to bands, individual performances and music exams.

Students can enrol in individual singing and piano lessons if they are participating in a performance class. Individual acting lessons are available on an ad-hoc basis for students who are participating in a performance class and who need specific assistance with audition or performance material.

Instrumental students are enrolled at the discretion of our instrumental teachers to ensure that our teaching is appropriate for the age and ability of the child.

EXITLEFT PERFORMANCE ACADEMY HANDBOOK 14

One of the things that sets us apart is the amazing performance opportunities Academy students have throughout the year. Performances not only give students a chance to shine but they learn how to be creative on demand, cope with deadlines, and work together to create something magical.

We aim to have a performance outcome each term. The are all listed under our ‘Important dates’ at the beginning of the handbook. Performances are not compulsory, although we encourage all our students to be involved. We find that those who don’t perform miss out on the team bonding and sense of achievement that the students who take part experience. Students will often have a noticeable ‘jump’ in their skills after a performance.

We work hard to develop a sense of self-reliance, teamwork and commitment in our students. Part of this involves teaching students to rely on themselves and become proactive. We don’t have any parents backstage (and our senior students take pride in being the helpers for our youngest students). We encourage students to be aware of what is happening around them, learn to dress and present themselves professionally, know when to ask questions and anticipate when it’s appropriate to take a break or head to the bathroom.

What to expect at a major concert

For many of our young students our major concerts are the first time they will step onto stage. Because of the limited time we often have when in the concert venue, we wanted to explain a little about how these concerts work. At any Academy performances parents do not need to purchase a ticket for students who are performing.

The dress rehearsal

There will be a dress rehearsal, usually prior to the start of the concert, this is compulsory for all performers. It allows students to not only practice their items, but also get a feel for the space, be briefed on safety in the venue and settle in before show time. Parents should not stay at this rehearsal - please drop your child, feel free to settle them into a seat and then leave. There will be plenty of staff and senior students on hand to look after them.

Toilet and food breaks

Our younger students will be asked before the concert begins if they need to go to the toilet, aside from this they can ask any senior student or teacher at any time if they really need to go. During the concert the bathroom won’t be easily accessible so they should take up the opportunity to go immediately beforehand.

If the concert runs over a meal break there will be ample time for children to eat. If students are only required for a couple of hours they may not have an opportunity to eat and they should eat before they arrive at the venue. We will normally advise parents on whether to supply food when the rehearsal schedule is provided. Students are welcome to bring a water bottle and a jacket.

During the show

We like to keep all of our students seated up on the stage or together in a group in the audience so they can enjoy watching each other perform. Students learn a lot from watching their peers

Performances

15

performing and gaining inspiration from the older, more experienced students. Sitting together allows the students to build friendships and creates a community atmosphere that helps dispel the nerves and bolster students confidence in stepping onto stage.

K-2 students will be assisted to move on and off the stage, as well as stand up in their spots at the appropriate time by senior students and staff, and our senior students are expected to manage this themselves with little direction.

After the show

At the end of the show all students will collect their bags under the direction of staff and senior students and will be guided into the auditorium of the theatre where you can collect them. Parents and/or family members are not permitted backstage before, during or after our performances.

What to expect at the ameB exams

We will often encourage students participating in individual lessons to do the Australian Music Examination Board exams. These exams form a great ‘yardstick’ for our students progress and are a safe way to learn to deal with performance stress and nerves at an early age. This gives our students a huge advantage when doing college level and university exams in future years. AMEB exams above fourth grade can also be counted towards the TCE.

Because of the number of students we enter, the Academy is given a specific time for our exams. In 2018 it will be the week of the 28th of May.

Entering a student

The AMEB entry will be sent home to parents to complete and return along with the payment. The exams are optional but for students who enter we will provide extra assistance to them to learn their pieces and prepare. Exact time of the exams will be advised once all entries have been received.

Prior to the exam

Prior to their exam, the students will use their solo lesson time to learn their solo pieces, scales and cover any theory which will need to be known. Recordings of the Exam pieces will be included on our Google drive to allow students to practice at home.

Because this is an exam, we find that students will express their nerves to parents, saying ‘I don’t know the piece’ or ‘I’m not ready, I need lots of extra rehearsal’. This is quite common and to alleviate this we will arrange for our principal, Ian to go through the pieces with the student to ensure they are feeling confident and are familiar with the accompaniment. The best way to ensure students are feeling comfortable is to practice the piece with the recording at home for 10-15 minutes each day.

At the exam

On the day of the exam, students will meet Ian at the exam location (often the Hobart studio) 15 minutes before their exam time. Students should dress well (like they are going to a birthday party) or wear formal school uniform.

At the exam you will head into the room with Ian who will be accompanying you. You will be introduced to the examiner and the exam will commence. Scales and technical work will be examined first before you will sing your songs. Ian will be asked to leave the room and you will then be asked some general music knowledge questions and complete some listening tests. You may leave once the exam is complete.

the stage school project

So many kids want to be in a show, they love to step into the spotlight and thrive in front of an audience. We understand… the thrill of performing, the amazing friendships and the feeling of accomplishment that comes with being a part of something special.

But what if they could learn something more.

For young performers, it’s relatively easy to learn a script, some moves and a bit of choreography. The challenge is in making the performance great.

This is what we do differently.

We give students the skills to create believable performances. Teach them how to work together, what is expected in the rehearsal room and how to be professional when in the theatre.

Combined with our core performance classes where students learn the basics of good singing and acting technique, the Stage School project has produced some amazing results. Unlike some shows where only one or two students stand out, we aim for all of our students to shine.

With a tailored program designed to stretch students as they get older the Stage School project has something for students from Prep through to Grade 12. Stage School is an intensive 20 week boost to singing, acting choreography and stagecraft skills with students having the chance to shine in an ExitLeft show at the Peacock Theatre.

The projects are open to all ExitLeft Performance Class students. Although the students will work through a ‘mock audition’ process to decide who plays which character all students who enrol will be part of the shows.

The Stage School Projects are open to all ExitLeft Performance Class students.

Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. EXITLEFT PERFORMANCE ACADEMY HANDBOOK 20

Part of this is teaching students (and parents) about the importance of rehearsal and performance. Parents often ask how their children can be picked to star at big events. The answer is for the kids to get good at performing. Our most outstanding young performers are the ones who practice their music and scripts at home, come to rehearsals and regularly put their hand up to be part of as many performances as possible.

attendance

We encourage full attendance in class so that they learn the pieces, stretch their skills through consistent practice and form a strong community within their class and also with the other grades.

The demands that families have placed upon them in current times sometimes mean that there are clashes with classes and rehearsals. We have always endeavoured to allow students flexibility if they are sick or have events that impact on class. However over the years we have noticed that more and more students do not attend classes right before performances and final/dress rehearsals or they will commit to a performance and then pull out at the last moment. This places a lot of stress other students and can impact the quality of the performance.

Therefore we have compiled a list of the universally accepted rules and etiquette for the Performing Arts so that parents and students have a better idea of what we expect.

The rules and etiquette for Performing arts:

1. Look at your diary as soon as you receive the details and ensure that you are able to do the rehearsals and performance. If you know you will have clashes please discuss with the direction team straight away.

2. Reply to confirm that you can participate (or to say that you are unable to) as soon as possible. If you consistently don’t respond, you may be removed from contact lists in future.

3. Do not commit to a performance or event and then pull out at the last minute. You will find that you are not asked to be a part of performances in future if this happens.

4. It IS OK to miss a lesson or a rehearsal early on if there is plenty of time in the term or schedule. However it is your responsibility to ensure you have practiced or caught up what was missed.

5. You will be given rehearsal material to practice with. It is your responsibility to rehearse at home and know your material for performances.

6. It is NOT PERMITTED to miss a lesson or rehearsal in the last two weeks before a performance. A large amount of detail is often covered in these sessions and it may be impossible to catch up. Students who don’t know what they are doing may need be removed from a performance.

Commitment

21

7. Final and dress rehearsals ARE COMPULSORY. These rehearsals are often in the theatre and are the only chance you have to practice in the space. You learn where and how to stand and move in the space, be briefed on the running order of the show and be taken through any safety precautions.

8. You are responsible for bringing any items of clothing, hair and makeup supplies for your performance unless a costume is being supplied for you. You should be neat and well presented for your performance.

9. It is UNACCEPTABLE to miss, turn up part way through or leave early for a performance you have committed to. Not only does this disrespect your fellow performers and the audience, it means that production time is wasted as your numbers may need to be re-blocked and your lines learned by another performer. It is considered incredibly rude to do your performance and leave before the concert or event has finished unless you have been given specific approval by the direction team.

What if my child is sick

If your child has a cold or a sore throat they can still perform. Children should rest their voice (try not to talk or shout) when they are at home or school in the days before and try drinking cold pineapple juice or hot lemon and honey. It’s very important that on the day of performance they do not take throat lozenges or medicine that numbs the throat as they risk doing damage when they try to sing.

If a child has a fever or gastro they should stay definitely home! Please text us at 8am on the day of performance if your child can’t make it so we can let the organisers know.

practice

The level of improvement you see will depend on the amount of practice students undertake each week. To facilitate this rehearsal music will be available on our Google drive so that it’s easy to access making it simple access and practice with. Students all receive sheet music as well as printed copies of scripts and poems they need to rehearse.

• Parents need to help with practicing, particularly for younger students. Ideally students will see a dramatic improvement if they practice everyday.

• If they have a poem or script to learn, go over the lines with them, one line at a time and correct mistakes. Read the other lines so they know when to say their lines. Practice with the rehearsal recording.

• If they have a song to learn, get them to say the words without music as though it’s a poem. Then alternate singing it with the rehearsal recording. Have them use the sheet music and also practice without it so they memorize it.

• If they have choreography to learn, we will often put a video on the Google drive so that students have a visual to copy. They should practice with the video and with the backing track to ensure they have memorized the steps.

EXITLEFT PERFORMANCE ACADEMY HANDBOOK 24

What to Wear in class

Students are not required to attend class in any specific uniform, although as we bring in the Academy tee shirts and jackets students will be encouraged to wear them. At this stage it is looking like these will be available again in 2018.

Students generally attend classes in free clothes suitable for their class, lesson or rehearsal. Many students choose to wear their school uniform (for weekday after school classes), or comfortable modest attire.

We prefer students to have midriff covered at all times and for shorts and skirts to be an appropriate rehearsal length. Closed toe shoes are expected to be worn in all classes. Dance wear should only be worn to a specified dance rehearsal and is not suitable for any tuition in a one-on-one situation.

What to Wear for performances

The performance uniform is an important part of giving students a sense of pride and belonging to our family as well as creating an identity for the studio in the greater community.

One of the important skills we aim to teach students is how to present themselves well. It is expected in the performing arts that you can get ready in a very short time (without help from parents) and understand how to style yourself in different ways depending on the performance. As a representative of the Academy we expect a high level of presentation and behaviour from all of our students.

This means that we expect students to turn up to performance with neat hair and for girls with long hair to have it styled to suit the performance. We encourage older girls to wear suitable makeup depending on the event and for it to be applied well. Students must wear the uniform correctly and clothing should not be damaged, dirty or un-ironed. Students should always keep on hand a pair of black jeans, black socks, white socks and both plain black and plain white canvas lace up shoes (commonly found at Kmart, Target or Big W for about $6) that fit and are in good condition.

For performances where students are costumed we have an in-house designer who advises on look and we utilize our large costume wardrobe. As part of our Stage School and any high level performances we will work with students to find a look that suits them, including making or altering costumes and providing tutorials on hair and makeup.

Our goal is for students to look comfortable, classy and cool in all their performances and it sets them up for what is expected if they choose to go into a performing arts career.

missed lessons and makeups

If you miss an individual lesson or class there will be no makeup or refund applicable. As a full-service program we don’t normally charge for extra rehearsals or performances because it forms a make-up of any missed lessons throughout the year.

Sometimes your child may be asked to be in a special performance or event. The extra rehearsals or performances for this may replace their regularly scheduled class or lessons and the cost is written against weekly lesson fees.

For any longer term absences where your child misses in excess of four weeks (such as serious illness or a long holiday) arrangements may be made to adjust payments or credit your account. If the Academy needs to cancel a lesson or class we will arrange a catch-up, refund or credit note.

payment methods

Payment for Academy lessons is weekly via a direct debit payment system. Enrolment is ongoing from the date of commencement, with drawings made every Monday commencing the first Monday of the week the student starts. Up-front payment may be offered in exceptional circumstances. Up-front payment period is six months and must be paid prior to the start of Term 1 or 3. No refunds will be given if the student withdraws from the Academy prior to the conclusion of this period.

There are no payments during the holiday breaks.

Our vision is to raise the standard of education for all Tasmanians through engagement in the performing arts

our values

• Build confident creative communicators through performing arts education

• Provide a safe place where students feel part of the community and are able to let go, play and have fun

• Identify commercial potential and offer development pathways leading to a career in the industry

At the Academy we create outgoing, energetic and creative individuals who can succeed in any area they choose. The performing arts program that we offer focuses on developing the voice, body and imagination to teach students critical thinking skills, develop communication skills and learn how to work as a team.

Educational studies have consistently shown a correlation between music, social development and academic achievement. Although we do have a high percentage of students moving into Performing Arts careers, our focus is on creating confident creative communicators. Students who study music, drama and performance throughout their school years learn discipline, commitment, teamwork and how to be ‘creative on demand’.

One minute our students are performing on stage at the historic Theatre Royal, the next they are entertaining toddlers at the Botanical Gardens or strutting their stuff at corporate and community events. This variety of performance opportunities gives students the ability to deal confidently with any situation and we find they go on to consistently achieve high academic results.

A recent article in the Sydney Morning Herald talks about how to prepare for the jobs of the future when you don’t know what they are.

“Technology is changing so rapidly that you can’t possibly equip school kids with the hard skills of the future, because they’ll be obsolete before they reach the workforce. You won’t hear this from the tech industry, because schools make great customers for laptops, tablets, smart boards and software.

I am no Luddite but I wouldn’t care if my children never saw an iPad at school, as long as they get to do plenty of art and music, drama, sport and free play.

That’s because the only way to equip children for the future of work is to develop their imagination, creativity and emotional intelligence. If the world is changing, the best thing you can do is equip them for change. They need to be emotionally resilient with a habit of self-directed lifelong learning.” 2

We believe that our performing arts program gives a fantastic grounding for students to succeed in any career they wish to pursue.
