A ll Women of all ages in the

Presbyterian Church are

members of Presbyterian Women

(PW). Our bonds of Chris an fellow-

ship are especially strengthened in

the sisterhood of small groups. Small

ministry groups create prayer quilts

and knit prayer shawls and other gi s

to comfort those in and beyond our

church. Our vibrant and growing PW

Circles gather around fellowship, out-

reach to others, and Bible Study.

4th Monday: Westminster Tower Circle A meets at 3 p.m., Social Area.

Tuesdays 2nd Tuesday: M & M Circle meets at 7 p.m. in the Presbyterian Students Center

Some of our Circles study the Presbyterian Women’s tradi onal Horizon Bible Study,

while other Circles select different material. Each Circle group is free to choose its own

books, devo onals, study, and fellowship.

Each Circle is open to all women of OAPC and guests who would like to par cipate. You

are also welcome to be a part of more than one of the Circles.

Bible Study for 2016/2017

H alfway through the Gospel of Mark, as Jesus and his disci-ples are on their way

to Caesarea Philippi, Jesus turns to his disciples and asks, “So, what’s the word on the street? Who do people say that I am?” It seems like a rea-sonable ques on to ask the people who travel with you and who have the opportunity to hear what folks in their towns and villages are saying about their teacher. “Well,” they answer, “some say you

are John the Bap st (back from the dead); others think you are one of the prophets, maybe Elijah, maybe another one.” Then Jesus looks them squarely in the eyes and asks, “Yes, but who do you say that I am?” Now that’s a qood ques on! The author's prayer is that, through the course of this study, you will find your own voice, your own answer. When Jesus turns and looks you squarely in the eyes and asks, “Who do you say that I am?” what will you say?

PW Birthday Offering Celebration

O ur May gathering cele-

brates the birthday of

the founding of the Wom-

en’s Auxiliary for the PCUS.

Each May we honor a mem-

ber of the OAPC PW organi-

za on by naming that per-

son an Honorary Life Mem-

ber. There is always much

an cipa on at our Birthday

Dinner, as we eagerly await

the announcement of the

year’s selec on.

The Birthday celebra on

is also the me that we re-

ceive the annual Birthday

Offering, a rich tradi on

among our organiza on, be-

ginning with the Offering’s

incep on back in 1922. That

year the PCUS Women’s

Auxiliary decided to cele-

brate the 10th anniversary of

the founding of the organi-

za on by collec ng an offer-

ing for a definite cause. That

same year Hallie Paxson

Winsborough, Superinten-

dent of the Women’s Auxil-

iary, visited Miss Dowd’s

School for Girls in Kochi, Ja-

pan. Realizing the school’s

needs, Winsborough chal-

lenged members of the

Women’s Auxiliary to give

one penny for each year of

their life as a birthday gi to

the school – and the Birth-

day Offering was born!

The following year the

decision was made to give to

a domes c cause – and the

Birthday Offering was used

to build the great stone

gates that mark the en-

trance to Montreat. For

many years, the Birthday

Offering alternated between

interna onal and domes c

projects. Now up to five

projects, from interna onal

and domes c organiza ons,

can be given each year.

Presbyterian Women have

given more than $29 million

in support of mission pro-

jects throughout the na on

and world since that “penny

per year of your age” offer-

ing in 1922. We can rejoice

that the recipients of the

Birthday Offering each year

find real solu ons for pro-

jects related to health, edu-

ca on, economic develop-

ment, and the needs of

women and children. Let’s

celebrate!


The Circle of Prayer & The Fellowship of the Least Coin The Circle of Prayer and the

Fellowship of the Least Coin

is made

up of

women

of many

coun-

tries

who

seek to

express their oneness in the

Chris an mission by a com-

mon gi to a special project.

Each woman prayerfully con-

tributes each month the

“least coin” of her country to

an interna onal fund adminis-

tered for the women of the

fellowship by the East Asia

Chris an Conference for pro-

jects of evangelism in the

name of Christ.

The meaning of the “Least

Coin Fellowship” is found in

its spirit and not in its materi-

al results. From a materialis c

point of view we see it as the

very smallest coin which a

woman uses that is involved,

but from a spiritual viewpoint

we see that its love and pow-

er are wide and deep. In this

fellowship any woman, no

ma er what her economic

status, contributes on the

same basis as every other

woman. This movement of

share giving is to help each

one who par cipates recog-

nize and understand the mis-

sion of the church in our

modern world. It is a means

of expressing the mutual con-

cern of the women of church-

es in many na ons. The foun-

da on of this fellowship is

prayer.

The plan was proposed by

a woman of India and en-

dorsed by women of Asia in

1958 at the Hong Kong Con-

ference. It has already spread

to many na ons. The Women

of the Church have endorsed

the plan and all women of the

Presbyterian Church, U.S.A.

are invited to become a part

of the Circle of Prayer and

Least Coin Fellowship.

In the fall, these offerings

will be sent by the local Treas-

urer to the Presbyterian

Treasurer who in turn will for-

ward them to the General As-

sembly Mission Board. From

there they will go directly to

the East Asia Chris an Confer-

ence to be administered.

Mission Haven is owned and operated by the Presbyterian Women of the

Synod of the South Atlan c (AL, FL, GA, MS, SC, TN). Located adjacent to

Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, it (1) provides a home away

from home for Presbyterian missionaries working in many countries

around the world, (2) short-term lodging for missionaries studying in the area or in

transi on a er re rement or the end of their term, and (3) a clothes closet of

good donated clothing to the missionaries and to students at local Presbyterian

seminaries.

Knit Together: 4th Saturdays, 10 a.m., kni ng/croche ng prayer shawls for those with
