HANDING & SWINGTHE HARDEST THING ABOUT
ORDERING A DOOR…..

INSWING VS. OUTSWING
• Inswing: door swings into the room/home
• Outswing: door swings out into the hallway/other
room/great outdoors
Simple: Does the door hit the person standing
inside the room/house or outside of it?

“IT DO MEAN A THING…
• …If it ain’t got that swing”
– If you have an existing door frame, it is built for
inswing or outswing – order the wrong door and it
will not work as planned – the hinges will be wrong.
– Swing impacts construction of the door frame
(jambs used) as well as machining for the hinges

HANDING 101• Handing indicates which hand will be used to open the door – left
or right – not where the handle is
• Do not use the door handle placement to figure out handing – it will lead to mistakes
• Handing will impact how the door is machined for the handleset as well as the hinges
• The handing will also impact which way the door opens to the left or right – the wrong handing may have the door banging into walls or furniture or limit accessibility to the space beyond
• Handlesets may also be impacted – some are designed specifically for right or left handed doors
‘K, we get it, handing is important

CHOOSING SIDES
• Hinge-side: You can see the hinges when the door is
closed – door opens toward you
• Stop side: You cannot see the hinges when the door
is closed – you can see the door stop – door opens
away from you

HANDING: HINGE PLACEMENT
• For outswing doors, if you stand in front of the door:
– Hinge-side left = right hand
– Hinge-side right = left hand
• For inswing doors, if you stand in front of the door:
– Hinge-side left = left hand
– Hinge-side right = right hand
FOR INSWING FOR OUTSWING
Handing is the same as hinge-side
Handing is the opposite of hinge-side

inswing:
• Stand inside the room
facing the doorway
• Which wall will the door
swing toward?
• Left wall: Right-handed
Inswing
• Right wall: Left-handed
inswing• If the door will be outswing:
• Stand outside the room
facing the doorway
• Which wall will the door
swing toward?
• Left wall: Right-handed
Outswing
• Right wall: Left-handed
Outswing

ANOTHER OPTION - INTERIOR
LEFT
HAND
RIGHT
HAND
• Go to the doorway
• Stand with your back to
the hinges of the door
(the door will have to be
open)
• Which hand is closest to
(can reach) the door
handle?• If it is your right – right
handed door
• If it is your left – left
handed door
• If the door swings into
the room: inswing
• If the door swings out
of the room: outswing
Specifying swing is not necessary for pre-hung interior doors

• Stand with your back to the hinges of the open door

DODGE THE ISSUE - INTERIOR
• The challenges of handing and swing are limited to passage doors aka your standard, hinged, “see them everywhere” doors that allow 95% access to the space beyond
• Try suggesting a different type of door:
– Pocket: Yes, there will be modifications to the wall, BUT, you will only have to decide if it will slide open the left or right AND you will have 100% access to the space beyond
– Barn: Two decisions, inside the room or outside AND which way will it slide open AND 100% access to the space beyond
