Lori brought with her a selection of beautifully finished hand made books which she had produced showing a great variety of techniques and materials. Materials varied from hand made paper pages to a wonderfully crafted book with wooden covers. All were hand sown to produce the finished article. Lori explained that she has people bringing her their favourite books to be customised into a work of art of the owners choice, using a variety of materials. A selection of the finished books After the introductions to the various types of book the group were set to work to start to make their own books. A concertina book was the first task the group were given using various tools to create the folds for the book. When this had been achieved they moved onto cutting the paper for the pages, then sewing the pages into groups ready for the assembly of pages before starting work on producing the covers. Hand  made  book  making  workshop  22nd  &  23rd,  April  2014    This  was  a  2  day  weekend  workshop  under  the  guidance  of  Lori  Sauer  www.bookbinding  workshops.com.  Lori  brought  with  her  a  selection  of  beautifully  finished  hand  made  books  which  she  had  produced  showing  a  great

variety  of  techniques  and  materials.

After  the  day  on  Saturday,  some  sore  fingers  caused  by  sowing,  had  been  nursed  overnight  and  it  was  time  to  start  on  the  covers  of  the  books.  Materials  were  available  to  be  used  and  the  group  set  about  their  task  using  glue  to  bind  the  spine  of  the  book,  then  covering  the  covers  with  their  chosen  material.    If  the  book  made  was  to  become  a  photo  book  ways  of  sticking  the  images  into  the  book  were  talked  about,    although  possibly  the  images  could  be  printed  first  onto  the  paper  and  then  bound  into  book  form  after  printing.    The  day  was  greatly  enjoyed  by  all  with  some  lighter  moments  during  the  process  with  one  of  the  course  members  even  sowing  her  scarf  into  the  book  on  one  occasion.    The  Region  are  planning  to  run  another  course  next  year,  watch  the  newsletter  or  website  when  they  are  finalised.
