Invitation ICOLD 2018 - Coming to Austria On behalf of the Austrian National Committee on Large Dams it is my great honor to ap- ply for the 26 th ICOLD Congress combined with the 86 th ICOLD Annual Meeting to be held in Vienna, Austria. Vienna was for five hundred years the politically powerful and geographi- cal Centre of Europe, just as long as the rule of the Habsburgs. With their palaces, govern- ment buildings and parks they left a substantial legacy in Vienna and the surrounding area. The imperial residence the Hofburg has undergone several expansions and revi- sions over the time and was the center of European power up to the beginning of the 20 th century. The multinational state at the time was eight times as large as the present Austria. The most visited tourist attraction and true landmark of Vienna is Schönbrunn Palace. The entire ensemble with the palace, the park grounds with numerous fountains and stat- ues, as well as the oldest still operating zoo in the world, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our heritage and construction of new dams worldwide are of high importance for the development of the so- ciety and can be seen as such for e.g. with its developments and long lasting history in Austria. Therefore, one of our aims is to gain a common understanding and to contribute actively to the discussion in our soci- ety on how “to deal with” dams, the environment, and related infrastructures. To allow for this communica- tion we organize conferences and meetings, to learn to respect the historic development, as well as the so- cial, regional, and ethic differences. Such a process initiates discussions and need capable well educated people. As one of the founding member countries of ICOLD, it would be of a great honor to be the host for the 26 th ICOLD Conference and we are looking forward to welcome and meeting you in Vienna. For the ICOLD Conference, it is our great pleasure to offer » Interesting study tours to high head pumped storage power plants, run off river plants and outstanding examples of Austrian dam sites at high elevation in the Alps » Delegates and accompanying persons cultural program, including music performances and excursions to magnificent places » Austrian renown hospitality, cultural heritage and environment » Vienna as a safe and pleasant place, with its excellent conference facilities » Comfortable international connecting flights and local transportation Our national and federal institutions, dam owners and members of ATCOLD are eager to contribute to ICOLD, sup- porting the Conference in Vienna and make the assembly most fruitful for our community with our hospitality and friendship.
