TRANSCRIPT
When educating a child, our late founder, Budd Bell used to say, you also must take into con-
sideration the child’s family. Kids Incorporated of the Big Bend still practices what Budd preached
when she began our organization in 1972. Ask our staff how many clients we serve and they will tell
you, 220 children and their families along with 42 prenatal women and their families.
Drive by one of our six Early Head Start centers and you might think it’s simply a child care
center. It is that and so much more. It’s where children learn through play, where families are en-
gaged in their child’s learning, volunteer in the classroom, participate on parent committees and in
family engagement activities. It’s a center where natural playscapes are used as outdoor classrooms.
It’s a location where physical, occupational, speech and hearing therapists work one-on-one with chil-
dren with special needs. It’s where graduate practicum students work one-on-one with children on the
autism spectrum...where a volunteer visits regularly to read to a classroom of eager children. It’s also
where teachers video classroom activities and log that into a computer every day as part of the docu-
mentation of a child’s daily progress which is then shared with the parent(s).
Research has shown the early years of birth to three are the most critical years for human
growth and development. Our staff is specially trained to work with these young children and their
families and because of their hard work and the commitment of our community partners who assist
us in our efforts, we continue to achieve and exceed the outcomes set by the Early Head Start program
and expected by our Board of Directors, Early Head Start Policy Council and our funders.
On behalf of our Board of Directors, Management Team and Staff, we thank you for your con-
tinued interest and support.

Play is often talked about as if it were
a relief from serious learning. But for
children, playing is serious learning.
Play is really the work of childhood.

Our Mission:
Supporting and education families with young children
through quality early learning, health and family services.
Kids Incorporated is the only community-based, United Way member organization providing quality,
comprehensive Early Head Start services to at-risk families with children ages 0-3 and pregnant women at
six locations in Jefferson, Leon & Madison counties, Florida. Through these services to infants and toddlers
and their families, we are shaping futures and strengthening families in the communities we serve.
PROGRAMS AND SERVICES
Quality, Early Education Services:
220 children attend a center with a 1-teacher-to-4 child ratio. Teachers utilize The Creative Curriculum for
Infants, Toddlers and Twos and conduct on-going assessments and document progress using portfolios with obser-
vation notes, photos, videos & work samples. Teachers use on-going assessment and results from four official
checkpoints a year to individualize planning to meet each child’s needs. Teaching Strategies GOLD identifies a
child’s approximate developmental age and skills in physical gross and fine motor, language, literacy, cognitive,
math and social-emotional skills. Natural playscapes provide outdoor classroom space.
Health, Nutrition and Disability Services:
Kids Incorporated maintains an enrollment of no less than 10% for children receiving Part C services.
Through a partnership with Children’s Home Society, appropriate therapeutic services are provided to children
in their classroom. Also, children receive breakfast, lunch and a healthy snack each day. A Health and Disabil-
ity Coordinator helps families identify a medical home for their child and ensures all children are up-to-date on
all immunization and health needs. An oral health exam is provided annually and health education training is
provided to all families. A nutritionist assist the cooks in developing healthy menus. A mental health consult-
ant provides on-going mental health support to children, families and staff.
Prenatal Services:
Our Health and Disabilities Coordinators work with 42 prenatal women and their families, ensuring the mom-
to-be has a medical home and access to information and services specifically designed to meet their needs. Fam-
ilies are encouraged to participate in all the Family Engagement Services and activities. Within two weeks of
delivery, the Health and Disability Coordinator and Family Advocate will pay a home visit to the new mom and
help ensure mom, baby and the family are all doing well.
Family Engagement Services:
Family Advocates encourage parents to be engaged in all aspects of their child’s development. Each family
completes a Family Matrix to help guide them and the Family Advocate in identifying areas of community re-
source needs, and then develop an individual family plan to address those unique needs and goals of each fami-
ly, while respecting the family’s values and beliefs. Family Advocates provide resources, training, referrals and
form community partnerships that assist families in meeting their goals. Through parent engagement activities,
families gain the knowledge to become their child’s primary nurturer, teacher and advocate and have the oppor-
tunity to be actively engaged in their child’s education. Our Male Involvement program encourages the partici-
pation of dads, granddads and other male figures in the lives of the children we serve. A Steering Committee
helps plan and carry out activities throughout the year at each of the centers.

Other Community
Events
Kids Incorporated participates in a
variety of community events,
providing children’s activities and
distributing information about
our program and services. In ad-
dition to the United Way’s Down-
town Getdowns, volunteers may
be found at back-to-school events,
neighborhood fairs, business grand
openings and community part-
ners’ events. Whenever possible,
we bring Oobleck, Gak & Legos to
stretch everyone’s imagination.

Kids Incorporated uses Teaching Strategies Gold as our child assessment tool which
defines widely held expectations of developmental levels for children in all school
readiness domains. These graphs show overall progress gained over time in each domain
for all children enrolled in our Early Head Start program. These results demonstrate
checkpoint assessments at the beginning of the program year and at the end of the year.
