It fills every civilised person with anger when one sees horrible and unhygienic scenes of spitting
and urination around him while moving at public places, especially at the railway stations and
bus stands. The problem is not just limited to these places, but if one looks at the corners of
every staircase of high rise building and at the waste-paper baskets placed in the offices, one can
see them coloured red. After the tobacco manufacturing companies launched easy to carry sachetkeeping the public places clean and tidy became a stupendous task for the workers engaged and
assigned with the job of keeping the places clean and tidy.
Urination at the roadside presents such an ugly picture that if one is accompanied by family
members, especially women, it becomes embarrassing and sometimes difficult to make the
young ones understand why the uncle is wetting the wall. The government has provided land to
Sulabh Sauchalaya in almost every big city which undertook this social mission for providing
hygienic toilet facilities to the people who visit cities from outside, and also for those who flock
commercial complexes day in and day out. One can find Sulabh toilets and bathrooms
everywhere and the organisation has been giving the facility to urinate free of cost while the
charges for using toilets etc are easily affordable. Even then people pay no heed to the calls of
environment and show no sense in contributing to make their social surroundings clean and
fresh.
Spitting too has become such a nuisance at the national level which is high in the northern region
as compared to the southern states of this peninsula. People never give a second thought while
spitting their pan masala from the window of a moving bus. Where that is going to land, the
consumers of pan masala never bother which sometimes results in serious scuffle and fights. On
railway platforms, I have often seen people spitting around even when there are spittoons placed
everywhere for the purpose. Many of the passengers generally hailing from the rural background
take their children near the railway lines for natures call. They dont care to take them to thenearby waiting hall where the facilities are available.
Such scenes only amuse our foreign visitors whom I saw at the New Delhi railway station
recording the scene in their handy-cam. The four girls, along with their two male friends were
finding these scenes quite entertaining and burst into the peels of laughter at the proceedings that
were taking place in front of a large number of passengers.
Should we feel proud on the development which we made in the last 60 years or should we feel
ashamed of ourselves that in the past six decades we were not able to educate our masses how to
conduct their social behaviour at a public place. We failed in creating awareness among the
poorest of the poor for which our political class shout at the top of their voice in the Parliament. At least we should have able to guide these poor travelers on the facilities that exist in the station
complex so that they were not made a laughing stock. What to say of the poor villagers, I have
seen many times even well to do people do not hesitate in urinating and spitting around the
public places.

Both have become national epidemic. I feel we must introduce some lessons on social behaviour
in the academics all across the nation and start teaching the new generation on how to keep the
nation clean by keeping the public places and buildings spic and span. It may take at least
another decade or so but then at least we will be able to get the social conduct of our citizens
right.
How we can stop spitting on roads?
y Stop the small sachet of Gutkas and paan which are easily available for the people toaccess and to spit on road. This may affect the tax paid by tobacco companies, but it also
reduce the cost of cleanliness, maintain hygiene, good environment, insect free
environment, clean roads, good health of people, good tourist attraction, more foreign
tourist, creation of goodwill, more money generation through tourism.
y The next step we can take is to make people realize the causes of spitting throughadvertisement, area check up, education of manners and hoardings. They should get
lesson about environment, cleanliness, beautification and specially causes of tobacco.
y There should be discouragement of tobacco industries which using the life of commonpeople for their benefits.
How we can stop urination on road?
y The first most steps should be to build up more public toilet all over the low class areas,so that low class people can access to toilet easily, not even low class area even in the
area which people use most should be available with public toilets.
y The next step can be cleanliness in toilets if they are available so people feels to go therewhenever they like to pee.
y It should be cheap so people can access without any thought and even it may be availableat free of cost because its the basic necessity of people.
y It can help the government with hoardings if the walls of the toilet are faced at road sideand the entrance at the back side.
y Proper survey should have done so that proper measurement can be taken. It can help thegovernment to see who are needful and how it is affecting the people of the city.
Overall measures to stop bad activities:
y The overall step can be to pressurize government to make stop this activities with somestrict rules and regulation, this can be happen when people raise their voice in unity.
yEducated people should come forward to look after this matter and stop people to spit onroad
y Special police force should be provided to the city, to look after these serious matters, which are growing day by day.
y Upcoming politician should also come up with restriction on spitting.
