Funded by a generous grant from the Fred J. Hansen
Foundation, the Hansen Summer Institute will take
place in San Diego, California and provide a unique
leadership experience and program in international
cooperation. For three weeks, five young American men
and women will join with fifteen students from a variety
of developing countries and regions of social strife.
A primary goal of the program focuses on creating an
international community of college-age scholars who will
use their summer experience to foster lasting friendships
and acquire a common practical understanding of a more
peaceful future.
Program elements involve classroom instruction as
well as training in the latest leadership skills of conflict
resolution, mediation, public speaking and cross
cultural education. Classroom training complements
local excursions to San Diego historical attractions and
cultural events, such as the Mayors office, the U.S.-
Mexico border, Sea World, the San Diego Zoo and a
harbor cruise.
Hansen Summer Institute training provides partici-
pants with hands-on tools for resolving conflict for
application and re-direction to their own situations athome.
Participants will, in addition to strong academic skills,
ideally have demonstrated their potential for community,
national or international leadership.

together at the University of San Diego for the duration
of the Hansen Summer Institute. The Institute will be
conducted in English and, for non-U.S. students, requires
proof of proficiency. The program covers all student travel,
food and lodging costs.

a new vision based on cooperation, mutual respect, and
an appreciation of diversity.

Venture Workshop at San Diego State Universitys Lavin
Entrepreneurship Center. Peer to Peer Coaching and
Service Learning are combined to help students make
their social venture ideas investor ready. The Hansen
Fellows will help decide which ideas receive grants.
