By Emily Brain ExprEss intErn W hitman-Han- son Regional High School freshman Tyler Kindy has re- cently been approved to begin work on his Eagle Scout project. Kindy is a member of Boy Scout Troop 34 of Hanson, and he has been in- volved in Scouting since he was in the rst grade. It was Kindy’s father who rst suggested that his son join Scouts, and it is because he joined at such a young age that Kindy has been compelled to continue his involvement. “I have made a lot of friends and, because I joined so young, I have kept a Scouting state of mind,” Kindy said. Kindy has hoped to earn Eagle Scout rank since he was a Tiger Scout, and this is his motivation to get a head start on his project. The administrative team has begun to meet to discuss the upcoming budget. Busi- ness Director Sharon Andrew said that the district’s budget for scal year 2012 is project- ed to be $47.7 million, which is up $2.8 million, or 6.43 percent from scal year 2011. Andrew said in the scal year 2011 budget there was not a need for the money for the Hanson Middle School and Indian Head bonds. “Because it was a debt ex- clusion vote, we can’t use the money to reduce the budget and the town of Hanson has to give a credit on taxes,” she said. The selectmen reafrmed their decision at their last meeting not to approve funding for the slate roof repairs without Town Meeting consent, which means the project would miss the deadline from a Massa- chusetts School Building Au- thority green repair grant that would reimburse the town 56 percent of the repair costs, es- timated at near $300,000. Had the board approved the funding, and Town Meeting reject- ed the spending, there would be a cash ow crisis, Town Administrat or Rene Read said at their last meeting. School Committee chair- man Bob Hayes said that the School Committee had con- vened an emergency meeting on Monday to authorize superintendent Ruth Gilbert- Whitner to send a statement of interest to the MSBA for the town to still be eligible for 56 percent reimbursement.
