HANUMAN - LESSON 6
Hanuman Carries the Mountain
Rama and his army of bears and monkeys crossed the ocean and camped outside Lanka.
Ravana had a wife named Mandodari who loved him very much. “They say this Rama is
none other than Lord Vishnu Himself, in human form” Mandodari told Ravana. “Why
don’t you make peace with him by returning Sita to Him?” said Mandodari. Ravana only
laughed. “Women are always afraid!” he said. Ravana had ten heads and twenty arms.
He was very strong and very handsome. “With these twenty arms I have conquered the
whole universe!” he declared. “What do I care for a puny little man?” he said.
Rama also sent Prince Angada as an emissary to Ravana’s court. Even after Ravana stolen
Sita, Rama had a kind heart towards him. Rama did not want to go to war with Ravana.
War is always the last resort. Prince Angada asked Ravana to return Sita to Rama so as
to avoid war. Again, Ravana just laughed. He thought he was so powerful he could do
whatever he wanted.
As a warning, Rama sent an arrow into Ravana’s court. It tore off all of Ravana’s ten
crowns on his ten heads. This made everyone frightened. But Ravana ignored this
warning. Ravana, in his pride, would not listen to anyone warning him. Eventually war
broke out. The demon fighters were very fierce. They had all kinds of bows and arrows
and swords and missiles. The bears and monkeys had nothing but their teeth and claws,
and big boulders they would throw at the enemy. The battle went on day after day,
sometimes with the demons prevailing, sometimes Rama and Lakshmana and the bears
and monkeys with the upper hand. Overall, the battle was going bad for Ravana and his
troops.
Remember Meghanad? He fought with Hanuman. During one day’s battle, Meghanada
threw a javelin at Rama’s brother Lakshmana, and Lakshmana fell down unconscious.
Rama was extremely upset, and did not know what to do. Vibhishana suggested there
was a great physician in Lanka named Susena. Hanuman flew to the city and brought
Susena back. “If he does not get the herb Sanjivini by tomorrow morning, he will die”
said the physician. “It grows on a mountain in the Himalayas, the mountains on the other
side of India” said Susena. Rama, who trusted Hanuman like no other, told him to
immediately fly to the Himalayas and collect some of the Sanjivini herb. Hanuman flew
to the Himalayas, but realized he did not have time to run around looking for the herb,
which he had never seen before. It was night time, so it would be very hard for him to
identify the herb. So he simply pulled up the whole mountain and carried it back to the
battlefield! The Sanjivini herb was then located and given to Lakshmana, who was
immediately revived. In the next day’s fierce battle, Lakshmana kills Meghanad.
The battle went on and Ravana kept losing more and more of his warriors. Finally, he
brought forth his secret weapon, his brother Kumbhakarna. Kumbhakarna was a huge
demon, tall as a mountain. He slept most of the year, which was a good thing, because
when he was not sleeping, he was eating enormous quantities of food! He liked to stuff
whole water buffalos in his mouth. When he came into the battlefield, he was like death
itself, stuffing handfuls of monkeys and bears into his mouth. He had a big battle with
Sri Rama, who eventually cut off his arms, legs, and head, finally killing him.
Then Rama had a big battle with Ravana, over two days. Finally Ravana was killed by
Rama. It was the gift of Rama to all his enemies that whoever was killed in the battle
with him, they all went to heaven and was released from all suffering. So even though
Rama killed the physical body, he gave them a great gift.
All the rishis and gods watched the battle from the heaven. At the end of the battle,
Indra came down and praised Rama for killing the evil demons. Rama asked Indra to
shower the field of battle with amrit, divine nectar. This brought all the bears and
monkeys who had died in the fighting back to life. The demons did not come back to life,
as they had already got liberation from Rama and did not want to return to their physical
demon forms.
Finally, Sita was led from the Asoka Garden, and she was reunited with Rama.
