HEAD LICE

One or more cases of head lice have been reported at school.

Please check your child for possible infestation. Signs of head

lice infestation include: frequent scratching of scalp and the

existence of lice eggs(nits) on the hair shaft. The nits are very

tiny ? about the size of a flake of dandruff. They are

grayish-white, oval shaped, and firmly attached to the hair shaft

near the scalp. They are most commonly found at the nape of

the neck and around the ears. It is rare to actually see the

louse/lice because they move so quickly.

If you suspect your child has head lice, please contact the

school nurse immediately to assist you with proper

identification, treatment, and eradication. It is through your

prompt reporting of head lice cases that we are able to keep the

problem under control at school. Please be assured that head

lice infestation is a common condition of children that has

nothing to do with cleanliness. ANY child can get head lice.

While lice do not jump or fly, they spread predominantly from

head to head contact, although teach your child to stay lice free

by instructing him/her not to share coats, scarves, head bands,

hats, hair clips or ribbons, and brushes or combs with other

children. Co-operative efforts between you and the school are

important in preventing the spread of head lice.
