APRIL 2013
COMMODORE’ S CORNER
First I’d like to thank Jim Ghinazzi for taking over my duties
at the February General Membership Meeting, and Dick and
Barbara Reiswig for hosting what I understand was a very
successful and fun meeting. Last month’s general was also
excellent thanks to hosts Arlene Sund and Judy Welker, and
our extra special professional presenter, LIYC member
Migael Scherer, who presented a personal story about her
love affair...with boats! Wonderful inspiration as we head
into our favorite season—boating season.
Can you believe it? It’s actually beginning to feel like
Spring. As your Commodore, I give you permission to put
off all those unimportant Spring tasks like gardening, window
washing, gutter cleaning. Do what’s most important—GET
YOUR BOAT READY FOR CRUISING !!
Opening Day (May 3—5) at the Islander is only 4 weeks
away and I encourage you to make that your first official
cruise. We always have lots of fun on the Islander docks and
it’s even better if you have your boat nearby. Looking for-
ward to seeing all the new additions to the Yacht Club fleet.
If you are a new member or haven’t yet attended an Opening
Day, I hope to see you there. We usually start Friday after-
noon with a lively party on the docks and potluck appetizers.
If the weather is a bit nasty (very rare), we head indoors to
our Islander “Club House”. It’s the perfect time to get ac-
quainted with everyone and do some boat hopping. Of
course, the more serious fun begins Saturday at noon and
ends………….whenever. Don’t miss it!
Our Cruise and Event Calendar is now complete and includes
new events targeted at our sailing fleet. Thanks to our new
Sailing Program Chairman Russ Johnson and our hardwork-
ing Slo-Mo Cruiser Gary Zerbst, we now have a robust sail-
ing component to our yacht club. Even if you don’t sail or
own a sailboat, check out these events. You might be needed
to crew during a race, and power boats are always welcome to
join in the overnight activities or post-race celebrations. At
last month’s board meeting $300 was approved for trophies
and other program essentials.

COMMODORE’S CORNER, continued…
Recently I was catching up on some reading and saw an excellent article in “Northwest Yachting” regarding
the loss of Bob Foresman, father of LIYC member Gayl Beller, and founder of Forespar Products. (Many of
us had the pleasure of meeting Bob at a yacht club cruise a couple of years ago.) Of course, Bob’s passing
has been a huge loss to Gayl, but also to the entire boating community. You can read about many of Bob’s
contributions to boating and his yachting legacy in the article reproduced below in this month’s “Newsline”.
I suspect there were more than a few Forespar products on Blue, the J-160 boat that won the third annual
LaManzanilla Regatta in February. While most of you probably thought I was just goofing off in Mexico, I,
along with fellow LIYC members Russ Johnson and Dave Welker, were hard at work representing LIYC by
crewing on this 53 foot sloop. You might remember that we founded this regatta and that Dave and Russ won
the inaugural race. The race is now sponsored by the Puerto Vallarta Yacht Club.

Forespar Founder Bob Foresman Dies
Reprinted from “Northwest Yachting” Magazine
February 2013
Forespar Founder, Dr. Robert (Bob) Foresman, died at his home in San Juan Capistrano on December 30, 2012. Born in
1925 in Pasadena, California, Bob was an orthodontist by profession and served in the Navy’s “V-12” program as an
officer in the Navy Dental Corps in WWII and Korea.
Besides his family, Bob’s first love was sailing and the ocean. He started sailing at a very young age by building a 10
foot sailboat before moving on to larger ocean going vessels. His inventive nature led him to develop numerous prod-
ucts for his own sailboat.
This desire to optimize his boat led him to establish Forespar Products Corporation in 1965. There he designed and
marketed an unprecedented array of products specifically designed for sailing. His innovation and focus on quality
products established Forespar as a recognized leader in the marine industry.
Forespar is one of the strongest, most established marine equipment manufacturers in the United States. Their di-
verse line of products includes Marelon composite plumbing fittings, carbon fiber structures, Leisurefurl in-boom furl-
ing, and aluminum spars. (See www.forespar.com.)
Bob was involved in product development and came to work every day until late last year. His son, Scott Foresman,
has been leading Forespar for the last 5 years. He literally grew up in the business as Forespar’s “first employee” and
has run several marine and non-marine businesses.
Bob will be remembered as a true pioneer and innovator in sailboat hardware. He is survived by his wife Juin, and chil-
dren: Scott Foresman, Guy Foresman and Gayl Foresman Beller as well as eight grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bahia Sail Racing Association which assures support for the next gen-
eration of amateur sailors, a 501 ©(3) nonprofit organization. Www.bahiasailracing.com/contribute-to-bsra.
