The weekend of August 20the we have a rendezvous cruise to Anacortes. It’s close and it is so much fun! (And it’s far enough away from the Swinomish Channel entrance where I’ll feel a little more comfortable.) If you can, please join us. We had a wonderful experience decorating and entering our LIYC float in the July 4th parade. Led by the incomparable couple, Rob and Sue Emerson, we decorated a beautiful First Nation canoe, hand-carved and so graciously loaned to us by Gregg Blomberg. With a group of awesome volunteers we created a beautiful float, complete with Barbara’s two granddaughters inside. We carried four signs (composed by Rob) that read: “The Salish Sea, the Salish Sea Our island home, our place to be Our water earth, our place of birth Our island soul, the Salish Sea.” And we won the “Best of Theme Award” for our interpretation of the parade theme of “Salute to the Salish Sea”. So, many thanks to everyone who helped. When Rob first called me, he said he’d heard through the grapevine that we weren’t going to do the parade this year. “I just don’t want to lose the tradition,” he said, and with those words, we were on our way. Thanks, Rob. Enjoy this month’s sailing song, “Southern Cross” by Crosby, Stills and Nash. https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=Bw9gLjEGJrw See you on the next wave, Lane

COMMODORE’ S CORNER

Hello, Everyone, Our summer is moving along faster than I would like, but our opportunities to share watery experiences together are still out there as we end July and move into August.

New Member Application: Mary Lu Schrieber and Charlotte Cassaday

have applied for membership in Lopez Island Yacht Club. Mary Lu and Charlotte moved from Eugene, Oregon, to Lopez about a year ago, particularly for the boating/ water opportunities. Mary Lu has over 40 years of small sailboat, canoeing and kayaking experience, but both are new to power boating. They currently have a Hobie tan-dem sailing kayak which they regularly use on Mud Bay and a 19’ Arima Sea Ranger. They’re looking to learn more about boating in the San Juans and about saltwater fishing. Please welcome them at our next LIYC event.

2016 RAFT UP FINDS A SWEET SPOT

Sunshine and just enough breeze to keep us cool was a winning combination for this year’s Fish-erman Bay Raft-Up. Great snacks and lots of participation made for a fun day on the water.
