Book Character Parade

It was great to see the variety and the effort that went into the costumes this year for the ‘Book Character Parade’. All classes looked fabulous! I must acknowledge Mr Neville for organising this year’s event.

I would also like to thank all of the parents and friends of the school who came along and witnessed this event. It is always a wonderful sight to see so many people coming and supporting the children and the school.

Uniform Update.

In a recent newsletter, I indicated that the P&C would be handing over the responsibility of the uniform shop at the end of the year. The P&C’s group of volunteers have worked tirelessly for a number of years, keeping prices as low as possible to support families of the school.

Recently, I have entered discussions with ‘Ezyprint’ and am pleased to inform the community that they have agreed to take over the supply of Narooma Public School’s uniforms for 2020. ‘Ezyprint’ are a local business in town near the traffic lights.

I am currently in negotiations with the P&C and ‘Ezyprint’ management to ensure a smooth changeover to minimise disruption to parents. Currently, the P&C will continue to supply uniforms at the school and I will let everyone know when ‘Ezyprint’ will be officially taking over as soon as this has been decided.

Wrap Attack Wednesdays

Mrs Constable and the environmental committee in the student parliament are bringing back ‘Wrap Attack Wednesdays’ for the remainder of the term. This means that they will be counting the number of students per class that are not bringing cling-wrap or similar products to school in the attempt to reduce waste.

The class with the least amount of waste will be rewarded! We ask parents to support this initiative and assist by packing lunches that require no wrapping on Wednesdays.

Stage 1 Mogo Excursion

On Thursday, our Year 1 and 2 children will be travelling up to Mogo Zoo. Notes have been sent home to children in regards to the information about the day.

Could I please remind parents and carers that all children must be in school uniform, which includes their school hat. Please ensure children are wearing comfortable walking shoes as well.

I know the teachers are looking forward to sharing this wonderful experience with the children.

Debating news.

Next Tuesday September 10, our school will be hosting Cooma PS in the inter-district debating competition. Our team have done remarkably well to reach the inter-district level of the competition in our first year of competition!

The students participating are: Harmony Cannon, Jack Klose, Jesse Doull, Lilli Herman and Ruben Smithers

We look forward to hearing about the result of this debate in a future newsletter. Thank you also must go to Mrs Cross for supporting and helping to prepare the children for this event.

Narooma Receives Honours Award at Tournament of Minds 2019

On Sunday 1st September, 5 students from Narooma Public School travelled to the University of Wollongong to compete in the Tournament of Minds South Coast Regional Final. The team was a mixture of Year 5 and 6 students and included Luke Barry, Johnny Constable, Jesse Doull, Claire Ovington and Jade Wilson. Unfortunately, Ruben Smithers was unable to make it on the day.

The Tournament of Minds is a competition that focuses on solving open-ended challenges in a creative way whilst developing collaboration and teamwork.

I am delighted to announce that our students received an Honours award, achieving one of the top scores for their Long-Term and Spontaneous Challenges, on Tournament Day.

There were 26 teams in The Arts category this year. Our school competed to the best of our ability, but unfortunately we did not make it to the State Final. Our team displayed wonderful initiative and incredibly creative ideas in their performances and they should be proud of their effort.

Everyone worked very hard at school and at home for the last 6 weeks, giving up their lunchtime play each day to work on their long-term challenge. It has been a pleasure working with my team and I am extremely proud of their dedication and commitment!

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the extremely supportive parents for taking their children to Wollongong last Sunday on Father’s Day!

The Tell Them From Me student survey - Years 4 to 6 Our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices.

You may remember that our students also participated in a Tell Them From Me student survey in Term 1 this year. Asking students to complete the survey twice in one year allows us to identify trends in student responses as well as track engagement and motivation across the school year.

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at our school. We have already made some changes here at school following student feedback from the last survey.

We want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 26 August and 25 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary.

If you do not want your child or children to participate, please contact the school by Tuesday, 17th September, 2019. This survey will only include students in Years 4 to 6.

Our school will be participating in the Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement.

Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements.

The survey is conducted entirely online on smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptops or computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 26 August and 25 October. Although participating in the survey is entirely voluntary, your responses are very much appreciated.

‘Fruit and Veg Month’ is in September

To celebrate ‘Fruit and Veg Month’ we are bringing back Wrap Attack Wednesday. Please pack your lunches in September without any wrappers at all.

Each class will count how many students have no wrappers at all and there will be a class prize for the winning class in week 10!
