The Daviess County 4-H Council sponsors a $1000 scholarship for a 4-H’er who will be entering college or technical school next fall or are already in college but have not received a 4-H scholarship in the past. The application for the Daviess County 4-H Council Scholarship will require the 4-H Achievement Application. The 4-H Scholarship Application is due March 1. Do not wait until the last minute this will take some time!! The 4-H Achievement Program is intended to recognize 4-H participants who have outstanding accomplishments and to provide incentive for youth to increase their knowledge, skills and abilities. It is a comprehensive program spanning the entire career of the 4-H’er, awards points for outside efforts and interests and encourages growth and development by awarding high points at multi-county, state, and national levels. As youth work their way through the achievement levels they become eligible for scholarships to Teen Summit, Teen Conference and eventually college scholarships. While you can start keeping records earlier, everything you do starting with your 6th grade year in school is included in your Achievement Application. The application is posted to the Daviess County 4-H website. Contact us for a digitable, editable version of the application.

Girls, Inc. OCC 3rd-4th Grade Class Secretary/Reporter update by Gabby. We met on December 12th. There were 17

girls there. Our President Kiera started the meeting then the Vice President picked Bryanna to do the American Pledge and Jaedan to do the 4-H Pledge. We are learning the 4-H Pledge together. I did roll and they answered with their favorite color. We made tree Christmas Ornaments and Christmas Cereal Trail Mix.

During Fall Break Senior Level 4-H’er Lily Young visited the Girls Inc OCC Campus 5th-Teen class. The classes focus this year has been leadership, serving others and health. She spoke with the class about healthy snacks and the importance of drinking water everyday. She helped the girls make Apple Pie Yogurt parfaits and berry infused water that they served to the other classes and adults at the campus before serving themselves. She presented a lesson in Social Media/Internet Safety that she had created. The girls discussed online safety, cyber bullying and why being safe online was also important to your health. Lily has really stepped up to be a great role model for all 4-H’ers!

GET MOVING!

J A N U A R Y 2 0 1 9

Do you ever have a hard time sitting still? Sometimes

your body just really, really wants to move. That is natural. The more you move, the better

you feel, and the easier it is to sit still when you need to.

When you get moving, it helps keep you healthy, gives you energy, boosts

your self-confidence, can make you feel more relaxed,

and it is true — physical activity can help you do better in school.

Physical activity also helps you build muscles and strengthen your bones. Do you know how to strengthen your bones? You probably

Be a good role model for your siblings, friends, or even parents and get moving!

already do it every day. You build your bone strength by putting pressure on them to get stronger. Running, jumping, or even doing a cartwheel are some ways to build bone strength.

When you are playing, you might feel your heart beat faster, which is a sign that you are increasing your heart rate and making your heart stronger. That is a good thing. Just make sure that if you need to take a break, you listen to your body.

How much activity do I need?Kids age 6 to 17 need at least 60 minutes

of movement every day. However, if you can get more minutes in — do it!

How to get 60 minutes of activity?Do not feel like you have to have a full

60 minutes free to be active. You can split up your movement throughout the day. It all adds up.

What is your favorite way to move? You can move your body in tons of different ways,

there is no wrong or right way to get moving. You can do activities before school, at recess, or after school.

To fit in more movement, maybe you could walk to school or the bus stop with an adult. Or you can have a dance party while getting ready for the day. At recess, do the monkey bars or play tag with friends. After school, go for a walk with your family or play basketball with friends.

Be a good role model for your siblings, friends, or even parents and get moving! Even better, get your family and friends involved in physical activity with you.
