A Message From Your PTA President:

The 2017-2018 school year at Orchard Middle School is about to start! As usual, the PTA is up and running and currently looking for more volunteers to join in the fun! Everyone is always welcome and encouraged to take part in the OMS PTA! There is really something for everyone, working parents as well! You will find something that will fit your schedule and you will love being involved! Please feel free to contact me, Allison Jenkins, PTA President, with any questions. Please join today! The membership envelopes will be in the PTA packet coming home with your child the first week of school OR you can find a membership form attached to this newsletter and a flyer will be in the placement mailings. Your membership dues ($8) and any additional optional donations will help to run our PTA. Our students and staff members at OMS benefit from your generosity! Please send it in with your child~there is a box located in the office.

12th, Dec. 20th, March 16th and May 30th. Parties are held at end of school day for each grade level. • Fun Night (Co-Chair) Help Organize OMS’s annual Fun Night for Orchard students only on

Feb. 9, 2018. • Incentives (Co-Chair) Promote Incentives and help with cutting Box Tops. Get Box Tops ready

for mailing. • Legislation (Chair) Report information from Council Chair to OMS PTA. • Splash Parties (5th & 6th Grade Co-Chairs) Organize and plan splash parties for the

end of May. • Staff Appreciation (Co-Chairs) Organize various events held throughout the year for our

staff.



A Letter From The Principal: It is hard to believe that the 2017-18 school year is starting. It seems like just yesterday that we said goodbye for the summer. Our custodians have been working hard to getting our school ready for the upcoming school year. As we begin the school year, I wanted to remind you of the school hours. Our doors will open at 7:55 a.m. and all “before school” morning activities will begin at 8 a.m. and last until 8:40 a.m. At 8:40 a.m., students will be able to enter the hallways, visit their lockers and report to their homerooms. Students will need to be in their first period class at 8:50 a.m. to begin their school day. Our school day will end at 3:40 p.m. Please be flexible these first few weeks as transportation works out any issues that may arise. Just a reminder that all snacks in the classroom must be NUT FREE. Please make sure that any snack your student brings to school follows our policy. Over the summer we have had a few changes in our staffing. Mrs. Majors will be our math teacher leader. Mrs. Bunge will return to the classroom to teach math. Mrs. Meyer will teach math instead of literacy. Mr. Lavin, Mrs. Elliott and Mrs. Ansberry will teach both fifth and sixth grade. Mrs. Reisner is expecting a baby any day now and Miss DeRoia will be her long-term substitute. Mrs. Auxter is our new attendance secretary. This year, students will continue to take their standardized assessments using a computer. Students will have access to Chromebooks throughout the day in all subject areas. Students will regularly read and write using Google docs. Please remind students about using technology responsibly. Fifth grade students will be reading Home of the Brave this fall. Students may purchase this book from their literacy teacher in the first week of school.

Intramurals will begin Monday, August 28, with co-ed soccer. This intramural will run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Sincerely,

* Please bring appropriate swimsuits (no bikinis), towels and shoes. Tennis shoes needed to play basketball in gym.

*Parents are responsible for their child’s transportation to and from Solon High School. Children MUST be picked up by 7:30 PROMPTLY!!!!
