Thinking on Paper... “That’s Going to Leave a Mark” Thirteen or so years ago I came upon a freshly poured sidewalk in Fort Worth, Texas. The little boy in me couldn’t resist finding a stick and scratching out my name in bold capital letters across its still soft surface. Several days later I passed the spot again and saw that my efforts had not gone to waste: The letters were still there, hardened and etched for posterity. I wonder if that sidewalk is still there. I wonder how many people have read my name and wondered who, or where I am. I wonder if there is an obscure warrant for my arrest in Fort Worth for minor vandalism of public property. Leaving a mark is important. For most of us it’s more than scratching our name in wet concrete, or on the bark of a tree. We want to know we have made a difference, changed the world somehow…if only just a little. Much of the time we never really know, but our worth is not found in knowing; our worth is found in the desire to leave a mark. As children, we make handprints in wet concrete, carve initials on trees, write personal messages in the hard pack of the shoreline, draw chalk portraits on the jogging path, make angels and write our names in the snow. It doesn’t seem to matter that traffic and jackhammers, seasons and storms, time, tides, wind and sun eventually whisk away our efforts with varied speed and utility. To a child it is the act of leaving the mark, acting in the moment, that brings the pleasure. When the mark is gone it is gone, and the child will simply leave another and never ponder the question of where it went, or what purpose it served. It is only important that it was there for a while. May we be as little children. Rev. “That’s Going to Leave a Mark”

Thirteen or so years ago I came upon a freshly poured sidewalk in Fort Worth, Texas.
