Then the following weekend Santa will make a welcome return to the village on his annual Santa

Run - see page 23 for the dates and route.

We are thinking of holding a Christmas Card competition in 2020. Details will be

announced later, but we will be looking for a Christmas Card

that depicts Doddington!

Saturday 7th December is going to be a busy day. There are two Christmas Fayres, plus the Crafts, stalls and

entertainment that lead to the grand switching on of the Christmas lights - see inside for details.

This month’s Diary is full of festive things to do - so please support the village activities in

the lead up to Christmas!.

Dear Residents of Doddington

The Christmas season is well and truly upon us. Soon the village will be ablaze with a magnificent display of lights and Santa will be here on his annual visit to Doddington! Well done everyone for your hard work - again!

The attendance at our BINGO was a little disappointing, but we did raise £500, enough money to cover one month’s printing costs. Thank you if you donated a prize or helped in any way.

A big thank you to the George Inn for their very kind donation of £250 from the Race Night held in November. This will go towards printing costs by way of page sponsors. We are delighted to hear that there will be another Race Night on Saturday 21st December - it would be great if you could support the Diary by “buying” a horse or sponsoring a race!

Don’t forget to bring us your Christmas cards to the “turning on of the Christmas lights” and we will deliver them for you for 20p per card - sorry but we can only do village addresses (between the white gates that mark the entrance and exit to the village).

We have only had a handful of surveys returned to date, so don’t forget to bring yours to our table in the Methodist Hall on 7th December - thank you.

Finally a message to our regular contributors - please note the early deadline of 6TH DECEMBER for our January issue - we need to get the Diary prepared and printed before the Christmas holidays. Thank you.

On behalf of everyone involved in the Doddington Diary we would like to wish you and those you love a very happy Christmas and all good wishes for the new year. The Doddington Diary Team

DODDINGTON PARISH COUNCIL

Following on the resignation of Cllr Pat Jolley, who served the Parish Council for over 33 years, we are pleased to report the co-option of Cllr Karen Presland onto the Parish Council. We look forward to working with Karen.

Together with Cllrs Howard and Harrison, I attended the Parish Council Conference during the month, learning a lot about Cyber Scams, Road Safety, and the data that we can obtain about our village, amongst other things, to help us make more informed decisions going forward. We also had the opportunity to network with other Parish representatives.

Cllrs Mason, Fisher and our Clerk, Roger Wilkin, attended the CAPALC training on running a new cemetery and have come back with lots of information that will be useful when the new cemetery is commissioned.

Cllr Gowler and I have been working closely with Fenland District Council with regard to the new Local Plan which is being commissioned and is presently in the Consultation phase. Details of this can be found on www.fenland.gov.uk/newlocalplanYou can contact the Clerk on [email protected] or on 01354 680892

The Parish Council erected a Soldier onto the Clock Tower, together with a blanket of poppies, to commemorate Armistice Day. We have been very pleased with the reaction to this, and will ensure that he is used each year from now on.

Ruth Hufton, Chair 01354 740323

Doddington RemembersThe Act of Remembrance in Doddington was always going to be a little different this year with no British Legion to lead the parade, and in the run up to Remembrance Sunday the organisation skills of the late Debbie Williams were also missed. However, the village turned out in large numbers to mark the event as it had done for the last one hundred years.

The short parade was led by members of the armed forces and Alan Butt a Navy veteran also marched, although it might be the last time Mr Butt attends the Doddington parade as his parents are planning to move away from Doddington to be nearer to family. Also in the parade were Scouts, Cubs, Beavers, Guides, Brownies and Rainbows.

A good crowd watched the laying of the wreaths and it was moving to have the Last Post and Reveille played by villager Ted Tucker. The service then continued inside a packed Church, with lessons read by local Scouts.

Franking Sense - A message from the Rev Ian Brady

In the build up to Christmas, millions of people around the country will have been wrapping gifts and sending both parcels and seasonal greetings to loved ones far and wide. To cope with the bulging post bags the Royal Mail will be carrying out deliveries up to and including Christmas Eve.

The tradition of sending Christmas cards started in 1843 when Sir Henry Cole, who had helped to create the world’s first uniform postal service Britain's Penny Post, commissioned John Callcott Horsley to come up with a design. The first Christmas card showed three generations of a Victorian family sitting around a table at Christmas, one thousand such cards were printed. According to recent figures over 100 million Christmas cards are bought and sent by festive well-wishers, that takes some licking!

Royal Mail first published special Christmas stamps in 1966, with children's paintings of a king and a snowman. For years Christmas stamps had a biblical theme. Nowadays secular scenes and Christmas imagery alternate. However, even in the years dominated by robins, snowmen and Father Christmas, the Royal Mail still make stamps with a biblical theme available. Which is first class news, for whether we post cards or not, the message of peace and goodwill is not only one that the world needs to hear, but also the reason for the delivery of Jesus into the world.

At Christmas, God sent his flesh and blood Son into a dark, sinful, lost and selfish world as a fragile, vulnerable baby. As a man, Jesus’s mission was to bring light, forgiveness and peace. Jesus reached out to those on the edges - those marginalised through race, illness age and poverty. Jesus welcomes those burdened with guilt because of things that they had done, or shame because of what had been done to them. Ultimately, Jesus gave His life so that we can live.

The shepherds, angels and crib scenes of festive philately are more than heart warming images. Reaching not only across our country but across the world, they are a reminder of God’s plan to save the world. Jesus is God’s down to earth gift to us all from Benwick, to Christchurch, to Doddington, to Manea, to Welney, to Wimblington and all over our community and the world.

Have a great Christmas and may God bless us each and every one.

CRIB SERVICE 22nd December2:30pm

A service for all and especially appreciated by families with children. A lovely way of thinking about what the Christmas celebrations are all about. It seeks to engage the children as we look at and think about the characters in the Christmas Nativity scene.

There will be a mix of carols, a bible reading, prayers, an opportunity for all to be actively involved – if they so wish as the animals and baby Jesus are brought forward and placed in the stable – as the story is retold.

A legal notice from the Diocese of Ely regarding the Benefice of Doddington with Benwick and Wimblington and the Benefice of Christchurch and Manea and Welney:

“A notice giving details of proposed reorganisation affecting these parishes has been displayed near the main door (on the notice board outside the church). The notice includes the last date by which representations regarding the proposed reorganisation may be made to the Church Commissioners.”

WIMBLINGTON & DODDINGTON NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Unfortunately, in the last month we have seen again a couple of attempted break-ins in Doddington and one in Wimblington; taking works tools. With nights getting darker we do need to keep a look out.

Please remember you can report any suspicious or actual criminal activity on line at www.cambs.police.uk/report or call 101. If you post incidents on Facebook with the good intention of warning friends, remember that the police are unlikely to be aware of your posting and it could hinder their general enquiries. Please do report direct to the police and if you wish to be kept updated on local crime then visit www.facebook.com/FenCops.

We are hoping to organise an event in March next year bringing different agencies together to give people the opportunity to pop along and chat and take information away. We will announce the date and people attending in the New Year.

We are constantly looking for volunteers to join our Speedwatch group so that we can reduce the individual workload and increase the number of patrols. We are now able to train people “in-house” to use the Speedwatch equipment and it’s a quick and straight forward session to then become a volunteer. For further information on Community Speedwatch please contact Joanne Rose for Wimblington or Andrea Harrison for Doddington by email at [email protected].

If you require further NHW information or would like to join, then please contact either JBill Harrison on 741406 or Jim Jackson on 740653 for Wimblington & Stonea and Andrea Harrison on 07766 658701 for Doddington.

100 Club

December: Christmas lunch for members only.

The 100 Club is very popular and we currently have a waiting list to join! Please contact Angela for more details; telephone 740300.

Editor’s Note:Everyone involved in the Doddington Diary would like to send their condolences to David at this sad time. David is a great supporter of the village activities and the Diary and we were very sad to hear this news.

Doddington Christmas Lights Committee

Doddington Christmas Lights Committee would like to say a massive thank you to all of the community for their continued support, especially throughout the coming weeks.

As you can see the erection of lights and illuminations is almost finished in preparation for The Switch on Event on Saturday 7th December 2019. The craft fair this year will be held in the Village Hall, Scout Hall and Methodist Church Hall, with doors opening to the public at 1pm. There will also be stalls and a barbecue on The George car park. Doddington Christmas Lights will be running a raffle, supplying refreshments and mulled wine and there will be a Santa’s Grotto. The light switch on itself will take place at 4.30pm, the Carnival Prince Kieran Rush and Princess Danielle Buxton will be hitting the button for us this year. Before the big switch on we will be welcoming Doddington Singers for the first time, they will be performing between 3.40pm and 4pm. We also welcome back Vicki Mason and the Future Stars who will be performing between 4.10pm and 4.30pm, both performances will take place in front of the Methodist Church Hall. We look forward to seeing everyone.

This year the Christmas Lights will be expanding further, they will be running up to the top of Child’s Lane and Wood Street. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the residents who allow us to have poles, electrical sockets and illuminations over their properties, without all of you there really would be no Christmas Lights in our village. There is also going to be a new display next to the Doddington sign on Newgate Street, at the top of Child’s Lane and new illuminations throughout the village, so keep a look out for these.

The Children’s Christmas Party will be held on Friday 20th December 2019 between 2pm and 5pm at the Pavilion, there will be an entertainer, refreshments, music and a very special guest appearance. For all booking/enquiries please contact Bridget Knowles on 07985127859 and you will also find the form in this month’s Doddington Diary and on our Facebook page.

The best lit house competition will be taking place again this year; the form will be available in the Doddington Diary this month and on our Facebook page.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your patience with us throughout November and on Switch on Day in December, we will continue to be as considerate and as quick as we can. Thank You.

We will keep you all updated throughout this time via the Doddington Christmas Lights Facebook page.

Thank you all, once again, for your continued support.

Village Walk

November was very wet, so we stayed on “dry land” to be sure of a firm footing!. From our meeting point we walked around Eastmoor Lane, Bevills Close, Ingles Lane and through the village to Askham Cafe for a well deserved coffee.

The next walk will take place on Tuesday 3rd December at 10.15 am. Meet us at the seat opposite the gold letter box to join the group. Everyone is welcome.

Village Gardens

The summer bedding has been replaced with Pansies, Wallflowers, Daisies and an assortment of winter plants. The many pots and tubs, including the new one outside the Church Room have also been replanted to maintain a healthy display through the colder months.

Gardening is a job that is never done, so we will be clearing the leaves and removing the dead heads in preparation for the much awaited Spring!

Thank you to Delfland Nurseries for their continued support with donated plants.

Women’s Institute

There was a good attendance at the November Annual Meeting and everyone sang “Jerusalem”. Sally Shortland gave a report on the recently held Federation Day. She said that the main speaker, Lady Carnarvon of Highclere Castle (where Downton Abbey was filmed) was a lively and enthusiastic speaker. She also reported that the Denman bedroom had been refurbished using money that was raised by the Isle of Ely Federation especially for this purpose.

Arrangements were made for the Table-top Sale on 7th December and for the New Year’s Dinner. Margaret Playford volunteered to lay the poppy wreath on Remembrance Sunday.

As it was the Annual Meeting, committee members gave their reports for the year. Shelley Underhill gave the Treasurer’s report. Margaret Playford read out the 2020 Programme with competitions and hostesses by Gemma Watts who also gave the Secretary’s report. This year’s competitions report was given by Margaret Patterson, Raffle report by Carol Turner and W.I. Visitor report by Susan Apps. Sally Shortland gave the President’s Address where she thanked the Committee and members for their work during the year.

Judith Cornwall presided over the election of the 2020 Committee. Sally Shortland was again voted in as President and the Committee will remain the same.

There was a display of items some members had made at recent workshops organised by the Isle of Ely Federation. The picture frame was made in a recent Pewter Day School held in Doddington Pavilion. All the other items were made at The Try It Day held at March Further Education Centre. There were marzipan fruits, flower arrangements, a purse trinket and also book folding. Once the book pages were folded they were then decorated and made into a small Christmas trees.

Brenda MacKenzie and Margaret Neesom provided and served the refreshments. Time was then given for everyone to make name badges and the equipment was provided. The competition was judged by Sue Bradshaw and the entrants given 20 points each were Gillian Wyles, Margaret Neesom, Marina Heslop and Suzanne Tucker. There were 7 raffle winners.

The December meeting will have Christmas entertainment by Rosemary Wheeler and Friends. The competition will be ‘V’ for ‘Vase’. The Committee will provide Puddings and cheeseboard and there will be a Secret Santa so please bring a wrapped present. The meeting ended with the National Anthem.

Doddington and Villages Under Fives

November was a great month for our group, we had the professional photographer in taking Christmas photos of the children, this was very popular and raised around £80 for the running of the group. In December we have our annual Christmas party, this will be on 20th December 2019 at the Methodist Hall 10am-11:30am. £3 per family with a party food donation. We have some exciting new toys and areas at our group. Over the last few months due to fundraising and grants we have been able to purchase almost £1000 worth of toys and crafts. We thank the local businesses and community funds for their support with the grants, and for our members for supporting our fundraising events and parties. And finally, we have recently launched our Baby, Child and Maternity sale to be held at Doddington Village Hall, Sunday 2nd February 2020, 10am-12pm. If anyone is interested in having a table for the sale it is £5 for a small table and £10 for a large table. Please email: [email protected] for a booking form if you would like to book a table.

A little help from our friends

There are many people in Doddington and the surrounding areas who juggle their lives to be able to provide much needed care for a relative or friend. This may be visiting regularly, supporting to attend hospital or GP appointments, providing personal care, or simply offering a friendly face and some company.

Without this care, your friends and relatives would struggle to maintain their quality of life and we would like to support local residents who give their time to care for someone else. At Askham we have a skilled and highly trained team of carers – and we are learning every day from each other and from the industry about best practices in care.

In keeping with Askham’s ethos of “Community” and “Empowerment” we would like to share this learning with all those around us, and so we have set up AVC Training to provide subject specific courses to anyone who wishes to learn a bit more about certain conditions their loved ones may experience, or up-skill on some aspects of providing care.

The courses we recently delivered in Safe Moving & Positioning as well as Dementia Awareness have proved to be very beneficial and enjoyable. We run these courses in the evening to make them accessible to many. Our next session will be on Dementia Awareness on 16th December. Keep an eye on our website avctraining.net for the schedule for 2020 – and if you would like to request a topic please contact Michelle Barker on 01354 740269 ext 237.

The Friday Group

On Friday November 8th The Friday Group celebrated 25 years of existence with a celebratory dinner. Although the group is based in Chatteris it is open to people with early to moderate dementia and their carers from Doddington, March and the surrounding district .

Anne Chambers from Doddington, started the group with the help of several volunteers, one of which, Enid Watkinson, who now lives at Doddington Court, is still offering support. Other volunteers come from March as well as Chatteris. One of the March organisers, Mike Hill, has served for over 16 years.

The group meets each Friday from 10am to 3pm at Salem Court. Some carers stay and enjoy the company of friends for the day, others take the opportunity to have a few hours to themselves. Games and other activities plus a raffle take place in the mornings and we have entertainment in the afternoon. Coffee is served on arrival and tea with cake to end the day.

People with early dementia and their carers are welcome to join us, no need for a referral, just come along one Friday and meet the crew. New volunteers are always welcome too,we would love to see you. If you would like any more information call Anne on 07957900556 or 740225.

1st Doddington Scout Group

Back in October, the whole Scout Group took part in a joint activity day along with Rainbows, Brownies and Guides from Doddington and Manea. T he weather was a bit soggy, but that didn’t dampen our Young People’s spirits, and there were 18 activities for them to try. A Cavebus (a bus which has been converted to contain a series of simulated caving tunnels to crawl through) was with us for the day. Other activities included archery, some DIY to make a boot puller, climbing a rope ladder, slack lining, and pop bottle rocket making and launching. The bottle rockets flew a long way! Around 150 young people took part in total; a day full of fun and adventure.

Also in October, some of our Scouts took part in an Expedition starting with a journey from March Railway Station and camping near Thetford. They also connected with Scouts from around the World as part of the annual Worldwide Scouting Jamboree on the Internet. Lots of International Scout messaging and Skype calls were made in the dark from the campsite!

During November the Scouts have been working on teamwork skills and disability awareness, Cubs have been working on their Naturalist badge including going mini-beast hunting in the dark, and Beavers did some sewing to make a poppy for Remembrance. The Scout group took part in the Remembrance parade and service in the village, and at Wimblington and Manea too.

Work has been able to commence on some refurbishment at the Scout Hall following our fundraising and the fabulous support we have received…more news on that in the new Year!

Coming Up…7th December will be a busy day…• Cubs will be singing Christmas songs in March Tesco, from 11am – 1pm, including

our Scout Group version of 12 days of Christmas!• Scouts will be car washing at Askham House’s Christmas Fayre – come and get

your car cleaned - £4 for a small car, £5 for a larger vehicle.• Beavers will be helping to run a fundraising stall at the Scout Hall as part of the

Christmas lights switch on, and will be selling Christmas decorations.• Scouts will be serving refreshments at the Scout Hall – come and enjoy a hot drink

and a mince pie, or piece of cakeAnd then…on 1st January 2020…• The Scout Group, and families, will be undertaking a sponsored 7 mile walk on

New Year’s Day – starting and finishing at the Scout Hall. If you would like to join our walk, or sponsor us, please contact us.

We are looking for additional leaders to help us – if you’d like to find out more, please contact us! Likewise if you have a child interested in joining, contact us via [email protected] or www.facebook.com/DoddingtonScouts

The George Community Hub is a not for profit group run by the George Inn Doddington. It aims to provide activities, information and educational events that are accessible to the local community. They are held in either our Coffee Bar or in the Marquee outside.

We have had a very busy few months in the hub. We held our children’s club during the October half term where we met lots of amazing children who took part in our Halloween crafting activities. We were very impressed by what they made and proudly showed them off to our customers. The Children’s Club runs on the second Saturday of the month from 10.00am – 1.00pm and we charge between £1.50 and £4.00 per child depending on the activities that are being undertaken. Our club in December is on the 14th where we will be making Christmas cards and other items relevant to the time of year. We also have a further date during December on the 21st where we will be doing Christmas Crafting.

We have been developing other aspects of the Hub and have been closely working with Age UK and the Carers Network; we have lots of exciting plans.

Age UK will be holding an event on the first Tuesday morning of each month where you can come along and gather information, help or just come for a chat and cup of tea. The next dates are scheduled for the 3rd December and the 7th January and will be held in our coffee bar between 10.00 and 12.00.

We are currently scoping IT equipment/computer clubs, friendship groups, games clubs, animal related activities and have lots of ideas for people of all ages. We would really appreciate your input into how we can run the Community Hub so the local community get what they want and need out of it. We therefore invite everyone to visit us, have a chat and tell us what you would like to see us do. It will be held in our coffee bar on the 9th December between 10.30 and 12.00 so pop in and we will give you a free cup of tea in return.

We very much look forward to seeing you and can be contacted on 01354 741177, [email protected] or our facebook page, ‘The George Inn Community Hub’ for any further information.

Doddington Village Sports & Carnival 1940’s Dance

Friday 8th May was the anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day), marking 70 years since the end of 2nd World War in Europe. All over the country communities have been en-couraged to celebrate in different ways, here in Doddington we had our own celebration 1940’s Dance. Doddington Village Hall was transported back to 1945, complete with military vehicles parked outside & a mock Anderson Shelter entrance. Inside the hall was filled with bunting & 1940’s memorabilia, all kindly borrowed from Ramsey 1940’s Weekend & reenactment group Home Front In Action. Thank you to everyone who came along & helped in any way. The evening was a tre-mendous success, hosted by The 40’s Home Front, with lots of authentic dancing from the era. Everyone made a huge effort to dress accord-ingly & take part in all the dances.

A row of bottles on my shelf

Caused me to analyse myself. One yellow pill I have to pop

Goes to my heart so it won't stop. A little white one that I take

Goes to my hands so they won't shake. The blue ones that I use a lot

Tell me I'm happy when I'm not. The purple pill goes to my brain And tells me that I have no pain.

The capsules tell me not to wheeze Or cough or choke or even sneeze. The red ones, smallest of them all

Go to my blood so I won't fall. The orange ones, very big and bright Prevent my leg cramps in the night.

Such an array of brilliant pills Helping to cure all kinds of ills. But what I'd really like to know,

Is what tells each one where to go!
