Support Queenslanders living with diabetes More than 236,000 Queenslanders are living with all types of diabetes right now. It is a little known fact that diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in Australia, and is the fastest growing chronic condition worldwide. Diabetes Queensland is a charity and membership organisation providing practical education programs, essential advice, ongoing support services and advocacy to Queenslanders living with diabetes, and those at risk. Through our programs and partnerships with industry, government and community groups, we work to ensure diabetes care is always improving and evolving. Our vital programs would not be possible without the generous support of our fundraisers. The 2018 Happy Feet Bushwalk is a charity event and has a minimum fundraising target of $300 per person. We recommend creating an online fundraising page through Everyday Hero. You can personalise the page with photos, your story and updates as you go. By creating an online fundraising page, you will have a unique URL that can be easily emailed to your family, friends and colleagues, and shared on social media. You may like to create a team fundraising page. Additionally, Diabetes Queensland will supply you with donation boxes and receipt books for offline donations. We encourage you to look at different ways to raise funds in the lead-up to the bushwalk, such as organising a free-dress day at work, a raffle or trivia night. The Diabetes Queensland team is here to support your fundraising journey. We will provide you with tips, tricks and advice to help you reach your goal. Our group target for the 2018 Happy Feet Bushwalk is $10,000.

“My team and I thoroughly enjoyed the Happy Feet Bushwalk,” Kristianne, 2017 participant.

Safety guidelines Must haves

Suitable footwear and clothing for sun and rain. Sun protection – hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. Water bottle or bladder.

Safety tips

Follow the group leader and their directions at all times. At times, the bushwalk may be strenuous. Remember to hike within your limitations.

There will be breaks for food and hydration, and for basic medical assistance, if required. Stay together with the group. Do not endanger yourself or others by wandering off the

marked trail, walking alone or walking after dark.

Injury prevention If your footwear is correctly fitted, you complete basic preparation and training, and you

do not overdo it, you will enjoy the activity and likely prevent injury. You should be fit and healthy enough to trek inclines. You can train for the hike by joining

our group training sessions in the weeks before the hike.

Weather Health issues from sun and exposure can occur when it is too hot or too cold outside. You can help to stay hydrated and avoid heat stroke by wearing appropriate clothing,

and drinking adequate levels of water. Dress in layers. You can put on or remove outer clothing to suit changing weather, and

sun/shade conditions on the hike.

“I am definitely feeling the calves and hamstrings at the moment, but a very good sore,” Kerrie, 2017 participant.
