December 21, 2017 Happy Holidays DEAR SAFE 98 MEMBERS, As 2017 comes to an end, we would like to give you an update on the Highway 98 project. We also want to thank you for your continu- ous support of this project and wish you all a safe and happy holiday season! After meeting with members of the Mobile delegation in November 2016, ALDOT has moved forward with the US-98 and SR-158 project plans for constructing a two-lane facility from Schillinger Road to the Mississippi State Line. The project scope will include build- ing the foundation and performing the earthwork for four lanes, paving two lanes and creating freeway type interchanges with entrance and exit ramps to provide a free flow traffic movement. Highway 98 will be constructed as seven sepa- rate projects. The first project which includes extending the eastbound bridge on US-98 over Big Creek resumed construction this past September. As of today, crews have completed approximately 40% of the founda- tion pile for the bridge, with over 6,000 linear feet of piling having been installed. It is expected that foundation work will be complete by the end of January. Over the next few months, the project will begin taking form, with substructure con- crete and girders being placed to support the final bridge riding sur- face. Regarding erosion control, the project has not encountered any issues, and none are expected with the BMPs currently in place. The second project which includes grading and draining four lanes and basing, paving and bridging the two eastbound lanes on SR-158 from east of Lott Road to Schillinger Road is scheduled to begin spring 2018. The remaining five projects are ex- pected to be completed within four to six years. The estimated cost to complete the two-lane facility from Schillinger Road to the Mississippi State Line is $115 million. As the project continues to pro- gress, construction photos and ad- ditional project information will be available on the ALDOTMobileArea Twitter page and www.Safe98.com. As always, please feel free to con- tact us if you have any questions or concerns as we move forward with the project. Thank you again for your continued support, and we hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! - ALDOT Southwest Region SAFE 98 E-NEWSLETTER Making Highway 98 Safer for South Alabamas Families
