This is a handy little pin cushion which will help you keep your supplies within easy reach! You can make your block (for

the pocket) any way you’d like! For mine, I used the preprinted panel and simply hand embroidered around the edges of

the design. Pre-printed panels can be found here https://jacquelynnesteves-shop.com/products/happy-little-things-

All seam allowances 1/4” unless otherwise specified.

For this project, you will need:

• (1) 4 1/2” (including seam allowance) completed block- Can be a fabric panel, appliqued, embroidered, painted,

or any combination of techniques

• (1) 4 1/2” square pocket lining fabric (Blue)

• (1) 4 1/2” x 7 1/2” fabric for front of pin cushion (Blue)

• (1) 4 1/2” x 7 1/2” fabric for pin cushion back (Pink)

• (4) 2” x 4 1/2” for top and bottom scallops (Black)

• (2) pieces of elastic, 3/4” wide x 4 1/2” long

• Pin cushion stuffing of choice (See “What should I use to fill my pin cushion?” here

https://jacquelynnesteves.com/what-should-i-use-to-fill-my-pin-cushion/

• Freezer paper, cardstock or template plastic

• Matching thread for topstitching

Make the pocket & pin cushion front: Place the completed block right sides together with the 4 1/2” square pocket lining; pin layers together.

Sew the 2 layers together along the top edge.

Press toward the pocket lining fabric, then fold along the seam so that both layers face right sides OUT.

Topstitch along the top (seam) edge, 1/8” from seam, using matching thread:

Place the pocket right side up on the RIGHT side of the pin cushion fabric, so

that the bottom edges and side edges are aligned. Pin in place.

Machine baste stitch 1/8” from side and bottom edges (leave top edge

unsewn.)

Set the pin cushion front aside.

Make the pin cushion back: Pin the pieces of elastic to the RIGHT side of the pin cushion back, about 2 1/4” from bottom and top edges.

Machine baste 1/8” from each side edge.

Draw lines on the elastic to make sections. I like to

use a Frixion pen for this, because after I’m done

sewing, I can just remove the lines with my iron.

Sew along the drawn lines using thread that matches

your elastic. Be sure to go over the line of stitching

several times and backstitch- you want the stitching

to be very secure.

Set the pin cushion back aside.

Basting is a temporary stitching, used to hold fabric together until

permanent sewing is done. It can be removed after permanent stitching is

complete, or, if hidden in a seam allowance, it may be left in place.

Make the top & bottom scallops: Print out the pattern and cut out. (I like to

use freezer paper- then I can iron it to my

fabric and trace without it slipping around.

You could also use cardstock or template

plastic.)

Place 2 pieces of Black fabric right sides

together. Align the straight edge of the

scallop pattern with the raw edge of the

fabrics. Trace the design onto the wrong side of the fabric. Remove the pattern.

Sew directly on the drawn lines. Do NOT sew along the straight edge.

Cut out the scallop shapes, leaving a scant 1/4” seam allowance outside of the stitches. Clip the inner points, and trim

away some of the excess seam allowance (be careful not to cut through stitching). Turn scallops right side out; use a

chopstick or similar tool to push out the seam allowances. Press.

Tip- For smooth curves, reduce your stitch size- the shorter your stitch length, the more closely you can follow

the drawn line, therefore the smoother your curve will be.

Assemble the pin cushion: Place the pin cushion front right side up on the table. Center a scallop shape at

the top and bottom with the raw edges aligned; pin in place. There should be

about a 3/8” gap at each end.

Machine baste 1/8” from each long edge.

Place the pin cushion front right sides together with the pin cushion back; pin in

place.

Sew the pin cushion front and back together, leaving a 2” opening for turning. Be

sure to backstitch at the beginning & ending of stitching. Clip corners.

Carefully turn pin cushion right side out through the opening. Use a chopstick or

similar tool to gently push out the corners and seam allowances; press.

Turn the raw edges of the opening in toward each other and press.

Stuff the pin cushion with your desired filling.

Hand stitch the opening closed securely.

Tip: It can be difficult to stitch through the elastic- you can use a thimble to help you push the needle through. It

also helps to use binding clips to hold the edges closed while you sew.

Tip- Turn your scallop shapes over to find the side that looks nicer- you will

find that one side almost always looks smoother. Place the nice-looking side

of the scallop shape rights sides together with the pin cushion front, so that

it faces outwards when the pin cushion is turned right side out.
