Happy New Year and Welcome back to our Spring Term
2019!
I hope you all had a wonderful and peaceful Christmas and are all
ready and eager to get back to learning! We are travelling back
through time in an exciting new adventure to The Stone Age!
At the heart of our learning this term will be the
Sacrament of the Eucharist.
Our journey in faith will be developed with the
themes of Journeys, Listening and Sharing. The
children will learn about the journey and sacrifice
that Jesus made as they deepen their knowledge of
the Eucharist and the events of Holy Week during
the theme of Giving All.
During this time, we will also be discovering more
about the Jewish faith.
Our cross-curricular topic is The Stone Age through to The Iron Age
so we will be incorporating many areas into this exciting work.
We will be examining and analysing many different types of texts in
English, and using good models of writing to inspire us to create our
own. We will read factual books, poetry and fictional stories such as
‘Stone Age Boy’. This topic will spark imagination and creativity
across the curriculum, I can’t wait to begin!

Dates for your diary
In Maths we will be linking our Science work on Rocks and Fossils and examining and analysing
volcano statistics, rock temperatures and changing forms as well as animal and fossil dating. This will
involve some measuring and investigation. We will also learn more about the role of archaeologists
and palaeontologists. Through History and Geography we will deepen our understanding of timelines
and changes in Britain, from hunter-gatherers to early farmers.
Scientists have found and studied skeletons of Stone Age animals. Human skeletons help scientists
find out how prehistoric humans’ bodies are different from our bodies today. We will look at examples
of animal skeletons and investigate ’How does a skeleton from a modern day human compare with a
Stone Age person? ‘and what does it tell us about pre-historic people?
Children will also describe rocks and compare their properties after tackling exciting activities in our
Science sessions. They will hear how fossils are formed in sedimentary rocks, discover soil facts
and investigate ’What is our Earth?’ and ’Why do we get different rocks in different places? ‘
Stone Age people used rocks for making tools, grinding flour and producing sparks to make fire. Can
we make our own Stone Age bread by grinding grain in a mortar? Stone Age people invented simple
ovens around 9,000 BC. They made bread by mixing together flour and water. They made flour by
grinding grain between two stones. Can we make our own Stone Age bread, evaluate it and create our
own improved bread through Design and Technology?
This term we will begin French lessons with Mrs Lambert and build up a bank of simple words and
phrases to introduce ourselves. Miss Ferrara will continue to teach Art where we will look at early
drawings, paintings and communications using natural materials.
P.E. will link with our Science work of movement and how muscles work. We will continue to
build our skills in Competitive Games, as well as Gymnastics with Miss Singleton on Thursdays. On
Fridays Dance sessions with Mrs Bathgate will begin!
Through Music we will explore imagery and discover how the Stone Age people made their own
music, linking to our work in Performance Poetry. In Computing we will use programming skills to
create work related to our topic, such as a Scratch programme to produce a rock cycle and a
Powerpoint Presentation on The Stone Age people.
How you can help
Reading, spellings and maths homework will continue to be set every week. Multiplication facts and
number bonds should be practiced regularly. There could also be follow-up research in other areas if
appropriate, a letter goes out every Thursday detailing home-work Information. Encourage your child to
read daily and explain what they understand from the text.
Please make sure your child has their P.E. kit (black shorts, white tee-shirt and trainers or plimsolls) in
school on Mondays. PE kit should stay in school all week.
